A bowl of cut fruit is rarely weighed, and the number depends on the fruit and on how it is cut. This guide gives ten raw fruit records from the SR Legacy table of USDA FoodData Central (watermelon, cantaloupe, papaya, pineapple, mango, pomegranate, banana, apple, grapes and guava), with the cup weights printed on their record pages. IFCT 2017, the Indian Food Composition Tables from ICMR-NIN, has per 100 g rows for most of these fruits but no cup weights, so nine of its rows are shown only as a comparison. IFCT prints energy in kilojoules, so the kcal for those rows are our conversion. Per fruit weights are in our per fruit guide, and fruit in a glass in our juice guide.

The short answer

By the SR Legacy records, 1 cup of diced watermelon (152 g) is 45.6 kcal, 1 cup of 1" papaya pieces (145 g) 62.4 kcal, 1 cup of pineapple chunks (165 g) 82.5 kcal, 1 cup of mango pieces (165 g) 99.0 kcal and 1 cup of sliced banana (150 g) 133.5 kcal. Our reading: per 100 g the records run from 30 kcal (watermelon) to 89 kcal (banana), so the fruit matters more than the cup: a cup of diced watermelon (152 g) and a cup of sliced banana (150 g) weigh almost the same and differ by 87.9 kcal.

SR Legacy: per printed cup

Each figure is our arithmetic on exact weights: kcal per 100 g times the grams, divided by 100, with the exact product in the sums line and the result shown to 0.1 with half rounding up. Every weight below is printed on the SR Legacy record page; none is ours. Only cup and half-cup portions are listed; the records also print wedges, slices and whole fruits.

The sums: 167765 30 × 152 / 100 = 45.6, so 45.6 kcal; 167765 30 × 154 / 100 = 46.2, so 46.2 kcal; 169092 34 × 160 / 100 = 54.4, so 54.4 kcal; 169092 34 × 156 / 100 = 53.04, so 53.0 kcal; 169092 34 × 177 / 100 = 60.18, so 60.2 kcal; 169926 43 × 145 / 100 = 62.35, so 62.4 kcal; 169926 43 × 230 / 100 = 98.9, so 98.9 kcal; 169124 50 × 165 / 100 = 82.5, so 82.5 kcal; 169910 60 × 165 / 100 = 99, so 99.0 kcal; 169134 83 × 87 / 100 = 72.21, so 72.2 kcal; 173944 89 × 150 / 100 = 133.5, so 133.5 kcal; 173944 89 × 225 / 100 = 200.25, so 200.3 kcal; 171688 52 × 109 / 100 = 56.68, so 56.7 kcal; 171688 52 × 125 / 100 = 65, so 65.0 kcal; 174683 69 × 151 / 100 = 104.19, so 104.2 kcal; 173044 68 × 165 / 100 = 112.2, so 112.2 kcal. Protein, fat and carbohydrate are the same arithmetic on the per 100 g figures, rounded to 0.1 g with half rounding up.

A bowl or katori is not a unit on any of these records, and bowls differ in size. The two weights below are our own examples, not dataset values and not measurements: weigh your bowl and scale from the per 100 g column.

IFCT 2017: raw fruit rows, for comparison

IFCT 2017, Table 1 (Proximate Principles), per 100 g. IFCT 2017 says all its data except poultry and egg pertains to raw food (PDF p. 27). IFCT prints energy in kilojoules; kcal is our conversion at 1 kcal = 4.184 kJ, shown to 0.1 kcal with half rounding up. IFCT has no cup weights, and we do not combine these rows with the SR Legacy records. Mango is not listed: IFCT has many mango rows by variety, covered in our mango varieties guide.

Where NYUS fits (our app)

We make NYUS, so read this as ours. NYUS is an AI fitness and nutrition coach in early access on Android, with no ads and no data selling. You log foods yourself by searching 8,900+ Indian and global foods or by barcode, and a weekly check-in adjusts your calories, macros and step goal once enough is logged. Barcode coverage of Indian packaged foods is not complete, so search by name when a scan finds nothing.

Frequently asked questions

How many calories are in a cup of watermelon?

SR Legacy 167765 (Watermelon, raw) prints 30 kcal per 100 g and lists 1 cup, diced as 152 g, which is 45.6 kcal (30 x 152 / 100 = 45.6), and 1 cup, balls as 154 g, 46.2 kcal. IFCT 2017 row E065 (Water melon, dark green, 85 kJ per 100 g, 20.3 kcal by our conversion at 4.184 kJ per kcal) has no cup weight.

How many calories are in a cup of papaya, mango or pineapple?

By the SR Legacy records, 1 cup of papaya (169926, 1" pieces, 145 g) is 62.4 kcal, 1 cup of mango (169910, pieces, 165 g) 99.0 kcal and 1 cup of pineapple (169124, chunks, 165 g) 82.5 kcal. Each is the record's kcal per 100 g times the printed cup weight, divided by 100.

How many calories are in a bowl of muskmelon?

A bowl is not a unit on any record. SR Legacy 169092 (Melons, cantaloupe, raw) prints 34 kcal per 100 g and lists 1 cup, cubes as 160 g, 54.4 kcal; 1 cup, diced as 156 g, 53.0 kcal; and 1 cup, balls as 177 g, 60.2 kcal. IFCT 2017 E045 (Musk melon, orange flesh) prints 97 kJ per 100 g, 23.2 kcal by our conversion. Our examples of 150 g and 200 g are 51.0 kcal and 68.0 kcal on the cantaloupe record.

How many calories are in a cup of banana, apple, grapes or guava?

SR Legacy 173944 (Bananas, raw) lists 1 cup, sliced as 150 g, 133.5 kcal. SR Legacy 171688 (Apples, raw, with skin) lists 1 cup slices as 109 g, 56.7 kcal, and 1 cup, quartered or chopped as 125 g, 65.0 kcal. SR Legacy 174683 (Grapes, red or green, raw) lists 1 cup as 151 g, 104.2 kcal. SR Legacy 173044 (Guavas, common, raw) lists 1 cup as 165 g, 112.2 kcal. SR Legacy 169134 (Pomegranates, raw) prints 0.5 cup of arils as 87 g, 72.2 kcal, and no 1 cup.

Why do SR Legacy and IFCT 2017 differ for the same fruit?

They are different datasets and different samples. For example, SR Legacy 169926 (Papayas, raw) prints 43 kcal per 100 g and IFCT 2017 E049 (Papaya, ripe) prints 100 kJ, 23.9 kcal by our conversion; SR Legacy 167765 prints 30 kcal for watermelon and IFCT E065 20.3 kcal. We do not pick one or explain the gap; log with one dataset and stay with it. IFCT has many mango rows by variety and no cup weight, so this guide has no IFCT mango row.
