"How many calories are in grapes or chikoo?" has no single answer, because grape types and mango varieties differ and the Indian Food Composition Tables 2017 (IFCT 2017, ICMR-NIN) list them one by one. To keep every figure solid, this page uses only the rows IFCT averaged over 2 or more regions, and says how many regions each row has. The kJ to kcal conversion, the protein per 100 kcal and the serving sums are our arithmetic, shown below.

The short answer

Raw edible fruit on this page runs from 24 kcal (gooseberry) to 94 kcal (grapes, seedless, oval, black) per 100 g, leaving out tamarind pulp, which is a 288 kcal concentrate. Green seedless grapes have 54 kcal, kesar mango 55 kcal, litchi 54 kcal, jackfruit 72 kcal and chikoo 73 kcal. Every row has under 3 g of protein per 100 g.

How the rows were chosen

IFCT 2017 has 68 fruit rows (E001 to E068), and 51 of them are averages of 2 or more regions. This page uses 22 of those, sampled in 2 to 6 regions: 6 grape rows, 6 mango variety rows and 10 other fruits. Apple, banana, guava, melon, orange, papaya, pineapple, pomegranate and watermelon are on our calories in 12 common fruits page, and dates, raisins and dried apricot are on our dry fruits chart. IFCT 2017 says all its data except poultry and egg is for raw food (PDF p. 27), so these are raw fruit, edible portion only.

Grapes, per 100 g

IFCT 2017, Table 1 (Proximate Principles), per 100 g edible portion, sorted from the most energy to the least. IFCT prints energy in kilojoules (kJ); we converted with 1 kcal = 4.184 kJ. "Protein per 100 kcal" is the protein divided by the unrounded kcal, times 100. "Regions" is how many regions the average comes from.

Fruit (IFCT row)Protein per 100 gEnergy per 100 gProtein per 100 kcalRegionsIFCT code
Grapes, seedless, oval, black1.41 g94 kcal (395 kJ)1.5 g5E025
Grapes, seedless, round, black1.24 g89 kcal (374 kJ)1.4 g5E027
Grapes, seeded, round, black0.76 g61 kcal (254 kJ)1.3 g4E022
Grapes, seeded, round, red0.95 g58 kcal (244 kJ)1.6 g5E024
Grapes, seeded, round, green0.77 g56 kcal (235 kJ)1.4 g5E023
Grapes, seedless, round, green0.62 g54 kcal (224 kJ)1.2 g5E026

The grape rows are not one number. The two black seedless rows (E025 and E027) have the most energy, 94 and 89 kcal, and green seedless grapes (E026) the least at 54 kcal. These are different samples of different grapes, so the table does not show that colour alone sets the energy.

Mango varieties, per 100 g

Ripe mango pulp, the same table, sorted the same way. Three of the six rows come from only 2 regions, so treat the thinner rows as less certain.

Fruit (IFCT row)Protein per 100 gEnergy per 100 gProtein per 100 kcalRegionsIFCT code
Mango, ripe, kesar0.54 g55 kcal (231 kJ)1.0 g4E039

Mango, ripe, neelam0.68 g43 kcal (178 kJ)1.6 g2E040
Mango, ripe, banganapalli0.54 g42 kcal (175 kJ)1.3 g6E036

Kesar has the most energy of the six (55 kcal) and banganapalli the least (42 kcal), a gap of 13 kcal per 100 g of pulp.

Chikoo, litchi, jackfruit and other fruits, per 100 g

The 10 other rows, sorted the same way. Jamrul comes from 2 regions.

Fruit (IFCT row)Protein per 100 gEnergy per 100 gProtein per 100 kcalRegionsIFCT code

Lime, sweet, pulp (mosambi)0.76 g27 kcal (114 kJ)2.8 g6E034
Gooseberry (amla)0.34 g24 kcal (99 kJ)1.4 g5E021

Among these other rows without tamarind pulp, fig has the most energy (82 kcal), then chikoo (73 kcal) and ripe jackfruit (72 kcal), and amla (24 kcal) and mosambi (27 kcal) the least. Tamarind pulp is a concentrate and is not comparable by weight.

100, 150, 250 g of five fruits

Each cell is the IFCT value times the grams, divided by 100, as protein and kcal. The weights are ours and they are edible fruit, not the whole fruit with peel, seed or shell.

Raw edible fruitgrapes, seedless, round, green (E026)mango, ripe, kesar (E039)sapota (E060)litchi (E035)jack fruit, ripe (E030)
100 g~0.6 g protein, ~54 kcal~0.5 g protein, ~55 kcal~0.9 g protein, ~73 kcal~1.0 g protein, ~54 kcal~2.7 g protein, ~72 kcal
150 g~0.9 g protein, ~80 kcal~0.8 g protein, ~83 kcal~1.4 g protein, ~110 kcal~1.5 g protein, ~81 kcal~4.1 g protein, ~108 kcal

The amounts scale in a straight line, so 250 g has two and a half times the 100 g figure.

Edible portion, not the fruit as bought

IFCT 2017 figures are for the edible portion. A whole jackfruit, litchis in their shell or grapes with stalks weigh more than the flesh, and the tables do not say by how much, so the amounts on this page are edible fruit. Juice, a mango shake or fruit with sugar or salt are different foods, and IFCT 2017 has no row for them here.

Three common mistakes

  1. Using one "grapes" or "mango" number. Grape rows run from 54 to 94 kcal per 100 g and mango rows from 42 to 55.
  2. Weighing the fruit with its peel or seed. The figures are per 100 g of edible portion.
  3. Counting fruit as a protein source. No fruit row here reaches 3 g of protein per 100 g.

Frequently asked questions

How many calories are in 100 g of grapes?

It depends on the row. IFCT 2017 has six grape rows sampled in 4 to 5 regions, and raw edible grapes run from 54 kcal per 100 g (seedless, round, green, E026) to 94 kcal (seedless, oval, black, E025). The seeded black row has 61 kcal.

How many calories are in kesar mango?

IFCT 2017 lists ripe kesar mango (E039, 4 regions) at 55 kcal and 0.54 g of protein per 100 g of edible pulp, and ripe banganapalli (E036, 6 regions) at 42 kcal. By our arithmetic, 150 g of kesar pulp is about 83 kcal.

How many calories are in chikoo (sapota)?

By IFCT 2017, 100 g of raw edible sapota (E060, 6 regions) has 73 kcal and 0.92 g of protein. By our arithmetic, 150 g of edible chikoo is about 110 kcal and 1.4 g of protein.

Which of these fruits has the most protein?

Tamarind pulp (E064) has the most protein on this page, 2.92 g per 100 g, then ripe jackfruit at 2.74 g and fig at 2.03 g. No row here has 3 g or more, so fruit is not a protein source. Tamarind pulp is a concentrated paste with 288 kcal per 100 g, not a fruit eaten by the bowl.

Why are apple, banana, guava and orange not on this page?

They are on our calories in 12 common fruits page. IFCT 2017 has 68 fruit rows (E001 to E068), 51 of them sampled in 2 or more regions. This page uses 22 of those: grapes, mango varieties and ten more fruits. Dried fruit such as dates and raisins is on our dry fruits chart.
