A glass of juice is rarely weighed, and the number depends on which juice and which record you mean. This guide gives seven juice records from the SR Legacy table of USDA FoodData Central (pomegranate, pineapple, grape, carrot, tomato, lemon and lime), each with the cup or other weight printed on its record page. They are canned, bottled or raw juice products, named exactly in the table, not a freshly squeezed glass from a juice stall. IFCT 2017, the Indian Food Composition Tables from ICMR-NIN, has only two juice rows (lemon and sugarcane); its whole-fruit and vegetable rows (pomegranate, pineapple, green grapes, orange carrot, tomato and sweet lime pulp) are shown only as a comparison. IFCT prints energy in kilojoules, so the kcal for those rows are our conversion. Orange and apple juice are in our glass guide.

The short answer

By the SR Legacy records, 1 cup of pomegranate juice (bottled, 249 g) is 134.5 kcal, of pineapple juice (250 g) 132.5 kcal, of grape juice (253 g) 151.8 kcal, of canned carrot juice (236 g) 94.4 kcal and of canned tomato juice without salt added (243 g) 41.3 kcal. Raw lemon juice is 53.7 kcal for its 244 g cup, and 1 lemon yields 48 g, 10.6 kcal. Our reading: per 100 g the records run from 17 kcal (tomato juice) to 60 kcal (grape juice), so the juice changes a cup by more than three times.

SR Legacy: per 100 g

Every figure below is as printed on the record page. The record names are the dataset's own. "Total sugars" is the record's own line; it is not added sugar.

Each figure is our arithmetic on exact weights: kcal or sugars per 100 g times the grams, divided by 100, with the exact product in the sums line and the result shown to 0.1 with half rounding up. Every weight below is printed on the SR Legacy record page; none is ours.

IFCT 2017: fruit and vegetable rows, for comparison

IFCT 2017, Table 1 (Proximate Principles), per 100 g. IFCT 2017 says all its data except poultry and egg pertains to raw food (PDF p. 27); these are raw fruit or vegetable rows, plus the lemon juice row. IFCT prints energy in kilojoules; kcal is our conversion at 1 kcal = 4.184 kJ, shown to 0.1 kcal with half rounding up. We do not combine these rows with the SR Legacy records, and a whole fruit is not a juice.

Frequently asked questions

How many calories are in a glass of pomegranate juice?

SR Legacy 167787 (Pomegranate juice, bottled) prints 54 kcal per 100 g and lists 1 cup as 249 g, which is 134.5 kcal (54 x 249 / 100 = 134.46). A glass is not a unit on the record, so for a glass of your own weigh it: our example 200 g is 108.0 kcal and our example 250 g is 135.0 kcal.

How many calories are in a glass of pineapple, grape or carrot juice?

By the SR Legacy records, 1 cup of pineapple juice (168187, canned or bottled, unsweetened, with added ascorbic acid, 250 g) is 132.5 kcal, of grape juice (173041, canned or bottled, unsweetened, with added ascorbic acid, 253 g) 151.8 kcal and of canned carrot juice (170491, 236 g) 94.4 kcal. Each is the record's kcal per 100 g times the printed cup weight, divided by 100.

How many calories are in tomato juice, lemon juice and lime juice?

SR Legacy 170545 (Tomato juice, canned, without salt added) prints 17 kcal per 100 g, 41.3 kcal for its 243 g cup. SR Legacy 167747 (Lemon juice, raw) prints 22 kcal per 100 g: 53.7 kcal for its 244 g cup, 10.6 kcal for the 48 g that 1 lemon yields and 1.3 kcal for the 5.9 g that 1 wedge yields. SR Legacy 168156 (Lime juice, raw) prints 25 kcal per 100 g: 60.5 kcal for its 242 g cup and 11.0 kcal for the 44 g that 1 lime yields.

How much sugar is in a cup of these juices?

The records print total sugars per 100 g, and by our arithmetic on the printed cup weights a cup holds 35.9 g in grape juice (173041), 31.4 g in pomegranate juice (167787), 25.0 g in pineapple juice (168187), 9.2 g in canned carrot juice (170491), 6.3 g in tomato juice (170545), 6.1 g in raw lemon juice (167747) and 4.1 g in raw lime juice (168156). These are the records' total sugars, not added sugar, and they are not a limit or a target.

What about mosambi (sweet lime) juice and fresh-squeezed juice?

The seven SR Legacy records here are canned, bottled or raw juice products named in the table, and none is a sweet lime (mosambi) juice. IFCT 2017 has a sweet lime row, but it is for the pulp (E034, Lime, sweet, pulp: 114 kJ per 100 g, 27.2 kcal by our conversion at 4.184 kJ per kcal), not for juice. We give no number for fresh-squeezed juice, juice with sugar, salt or chaat masala added, or a roadside glass; weigh yours.
