Calories in Bhetki, Tilapia, Tuna, Karimeen: IFCT
Track this in NYUS. NYUS builds a workout plan and an Indian-food diet plan from your goal, body, schedule and food preferences.
Join the NYUS waitlist"Bhetki calories", "tilapia calories per 100 g", "tuna calories per 100 g", "karimeen calories", "milkfish (bangus) calories" and "crab and lobster calories per 100 g" are all searched in India. The Indian Food Composition Tables (IFCT 2017, ICMR-NIN) are the Indian source for them. This guide gives fourteen IFCT 2017 Table 1 rows, all raw and per 100 g: eleven fish from IFCT's marine fish group (Betki, Karimeen, Milk fish, Rani or pink perch, two red snappers, Sangada, Silver carp, Sole fish, Tilapia and Tuna striped; tilapia and silver carp are freshwater fish and karimeen lives in brackish water, but IFCT lists them in this group) and three shellfish (a crab and two lobsters), with the place IFCT collected each sample. IFCT prints no weight per fish or fillet, so there is no per-piece figure. Fillets and prawns from the USDA table are in our cooked fish guide and prawns, crab and squid guide, canned fish in our canned fish guide, protein per 100 g for rohu, catla and hilsa in our protein in fish guide and in Hindi in our machhli protein guide, and other meat in our mutton, lamb and goat guide.
The short answer
By IFCT 2017, raw bhetki (Betki) is 284 kJ per 100 g, which is 68 kcal; tilapia 349 kJ, 83 kcal; striped tuna 403 kJ, 96 kcal; karimeen 386 kJ, 92 kcal; milkfish 442 kJ, 106 kcal; crab 343 kJ, 82 kcal; and brown lobster 292 kJ, 70 kcal. Across all 14 rows the range is 68 kcal (Betki) to 133 kcal (Silver carp). IFCT prints energy in kJ only, so the kcal are our conversion (kJ divided by 4.184, rounded to a whole kcal). Our reading: Silver carp is the only row with more than 4.5 g of fat per 100 g (5.17 g) and the highest in energy; the other thirteen have 2.67 g of fat or less, and every row is raw.
IFCT 2017: per 100 g, raw
Figures are as the IFCT 2017 PDF prints them (Table 1, PDF pages 63 to 67): moisture, protein and total fat in g per 100 g of edible portion, and energy in kJ. The kcal is our conversion. The "Regions" number is how many regions Table 1 counts for the row (1 for all 14), followed by the place of collection IFCT prints in its appendix of food names (PDF pages 530 to 545); for Rani (P063) and Lobster, king size (Q004) IFCT lists six places, shown as printed. IFCT 2017 says all its data except poultry and egg is for raw food (PDF p. 27), so these are raw weights. IFCT prints no portion weights, so there is no printed-portion table on this page.

100 g, 250 g and 500 g of raw fish
Shops sell fish by 250 g and 500 g, which IFCT does not print. These three weights are ours: each cell is the IFCT kJ figure times the grams, divided by 100 and by 4.184, as kcal, with protein and fat as the IFCT per 100 g figure times the grams divided by 100, shown to 0.1 with half rounding up. They are raw edible portion, not a fried or curried fish, and a whole fish bought with head, bones and skin weighs more than its edible portion; we do not say by how much.

- Protein per 100 g, highest first: P037 (Milk fish (Chanos chanos)) 23.66 g, P065 (Red snapper (Lutjanus argentimaculatus)) 22.79 g, P078 (Silver carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix)) 21.71 g, P066 (Red snapper, small (Priacanthus hamrur)) 21.50 g, P085 (Tuna, striped (Katsuwonus pelamis)) 21.28 g, P069 (Sangada (Nemipterus japanicus)) 20.26 g, P026 (Karimeen (Etroplus suratensis)) 19.68 g, P079 (Sole fish (Cynoglossus arel)) 19.05 g, P063 (Rani (Pink perch)) 18.83 g, Q004 (Lobster, king size (Thenus orientalis)) 18.54 g, P083 (Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus)) 18.48 g, Q003 (Lobster, brown (Thenus orientalis)) 15.96 g, P005 (Betki (Lates calcarifer)) 15.28 g, Q001 (Crab (Menippe mercenaria)) 10.23 g.
- Rows to check by hand: the crab row (Q001, Menippe mercenaria) prints 10.23 g of protein, the lowest of the 14 rows, the Betki row (P005) 0.29 g of fat, the lowest fat, and the Silver carp row (P078) the highest energy (555 kJ); we show them as printed and do not adjust them.
Why these are reference rows, not your fish
- Names are IFCT's. The row names are the IFCT 2017 names with the scientific name; Betki is the name for bhetki, Milk fish is the name for the fish also sold as bangus and Karimeen the name for pearl spot. We do not say that a fish sold in a market under another local name is the same row.
- One sample set per row. Table 1 counts each of these 14 rows as one region, so each is one sample set, not an Indian average; the places of collection are listed so you can see where.
- Raw only. IFCT has no cooked rows for these fish. A fry, a curry, a grill or a paturi changes the number by oil, masala and water loss, which this page does not give.
- Edible portion, no per-fish weight. IFCT figures are per 100 g of edible portion and IFCT prints no weight per fish, per fillet or per piece, so the "per fish" and "1 karimeen" questions have no IFCT answer.
- Energy is converted. IFCT prints kJ; kcal is our kJ / 4.184, rounded.
How to log it so the numbers hold
- Weigh the cleaned flesh, and say raw. 100 g of raw bhetki (our example weight, not an IFCT value) on IFCT P005 is 284 × 100 / 100 / 4.184 = 67.9, so 67.9 kcal.
- Add the cooking separately. Oil, ghee and sugar are in our ghee, oil and sugar guide.
- Do not mix datasets inside one day. If you log fish from IFCT, keep to that row for the same meal rather than switching to a USDA fillet row.
Where NYUS fits (our app)
We make NYUS, so read this as ours. NYUS is an AI fitness and nutrition coach in early access on Android, with no ads and no data selling. You log foods yourself by searching 8,900+ Indian and global foods or by barcode, and a weekly check-in adjusts your calories, macros and step goal once enough is logged. Barcode coverage of Indian packaged foods is not complete, so search by name when a scan finds nothing.
What this page leaves out
- A calorie target, and any claim about what fish does to your body: we have not looked up one for any person, so we give none. If you have a medical condition or are pregnant, ask your doctor or dietitian.
- Fish fry, fish curry, bhetki paturi, karimeen pollichathu, tandoori fish and any restaurant or maker's version: no row used here.
- A per-fish, per-fillet or per-piece figure: IFCT prints no weight, so we give none.

IFCT 2017 P005 (Betki (Lates calcarifer)) prints 284 kJ, which is 68 kcal, with 15.28 g protein and 0.29 g fat per 100 g. Betki is the IFCT name for the fish sold as bhetki; the sample was collected in Kolkata. IFCT prints no per-fillet or per-piece weight, so there is no per-piece figure.
How many calories are in tilapia per 100 g?
IFCT 2017 P083 (Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus)) prints 349 kJ, which is 83 kcal, with 18.48 g protein and 1.08 g fat per 100 g. IFCT collected this tilapia in Kolkata; the USDA tilapia fillet record is on our cooked fish guide and is a different dataset.

Milk fish (Chanos chanos) is the IFCT name for the fish also sold as bangus, and Karimeen (Etroplus suratensis) is the IFCT name for the fish sold as pearl spot; IFCT prints no cooked or fried row for either.
How many calories are in crab and lobster per 100 g?
IFCT 2017 Q001 (Crab (Menippe mercenaria)) prints 343 kJ, which is 82 kcal, with 10.23 g protein and 1.41 g fat per 100 g; IFCT 2017 Q003 (Lobster, brown (Thenus orientalis)) prints 292 kJ, which is 70 kcal, with 15.96 g protein and 0.56 g fat per 100 g; IFCT 2017 Q004 (Lobster, king size (Thenus orientalis)) prints 375 kJ, which is 90 kcal, with 18.54 g protein and 0.78 g fat per 100 g. Crab, brown lobster and king size lobster are three separate IFCT rows; the crab row is the species Menippe mercenaria as IFCT lists it.
How many calories are in 250 g or 500 g of fish?
For 250 g and 500 g, see the weights table on this page (our arithmetic on the IFCT kJ figure, all 14 rows); for example bhetki (P005) is 169.7 kcal for 250 g and 339.4 kcal for 500 g, tilapia (P083) 208.5 kcal and 417.1 kcal, and striped tuna (P085) 240.8 kcal and 481.6 kcal. These are raw edible portion, not a fried or curried fish.
Are these raw or cooked calories?
No. IFCT 2017 says all its data except poultry and egg is for raw food (PDF p. 27), so every row on this page is raw, edible portion only. A fry, a curry, a grill or a paturi changes the number, and IFCT therefore has no cooked fish rows; use the row as the raw weight and add the oil and masala yourself.
