Calories in Prawns, Crab, Squid and Oyster per 100 g
Prawns, crab, squid and oyster each have a few rows in the food tables, and the dataset behind a number matters. This guide uses two datasets and keeps them apart. The first is IFCT 2017, the Indian Food Composition Tables from ICMR-NIN: ten raw rows from its Table 1, per 100 g, most of them averages of a single region, with the region count shown on every row. The second is the SR Legacy table of USDA FoodData Central: five records, with the piece and cup weights printed on each record page. IFCT 2017 prints energy in kilojoules, so the kcal for those rows are our conversion.
The short answer
By IFCT 2017 Table 1 (raw, per 100 g), the five prawn rows run from 65 to 91 kcal: tiger prawns (orange) 65, tiger prawns (brown) 65, tiger prawns (Macrobrachium) 68, small prawns 71 and big prawns 91. Sea crab is 68 kcal, mud crab 45, black squid 80, red squid 79 and oyster 60. By the SR Legacy records, 4 large raw shrimp (28 g) are about 20 kcal, 3 oz (85 g) of raw squid about 78, 1 cup (118 g) of flaked cooked blue crab about 98 and 6 medium raw oysters (84 g) about 43. Our reading: every row here is between 45 kcal (mud crab, IFCT) and 119 kcal (cooked shrimp, SR Legacy) per 100 g, but the raw and cooked records are different states of the food and are not directly comparable.
IFCT 2017: per 100 g, raw
IFCT 2017, Table 1 (Proximate Principles), per 100 g edible portion. IFCT 2017 says all its data except poultry and egg is for raw food (PDF p. 27), so these are raw rows. "Regions" is how many regions the row averages; a row with 1 region is a single regional composite sample and the other regions are not covered. Energy is IFCT's kJ value; kcal is our conversion at 1 kcal = 4.184 kJ, rounded to the nearest kcal with half rounding up.
| IFCT 2017 row | Code · page | Regions | Protein | Fat | Energy per 100 g |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Prawns, big (Macrobrachium rosenbergii) | S008 · PDF p. 68 | 1 | 19.24 g | 0.52 g | 91 kcal (380 kJ) |
| Prawns, small (Macrobrachium sp.) | S009 · PDF p. 68 | 3 | 13.07 g | 0.78 g | 71 kcal (297 kJ) |
| Tiger prawns (Macrobrachium sp.) | S010 · PDF p. 68 | 2 | 14.24 g | 0.66 g | 68 kcal (284 kJ) |
| Tiger prawns, brown (Solenocera crassicornis) | Q007 · PDF p. 67 | 1 | 14.85 g | 0.56 g | 65 kcal (273 kJ) |
| Tiger Prawns, orange (Penaeus monodon) | Q008 · PDF p. 67 | 1 | 14.25 g | 0.74 g | 65 kcal (270 kJ) |
| Crab, sea (Portunus sanguinolentus) | Q002 · PDF p. 67 | 1 | 15.36 g | 0.60 g | 68 kcal (283 kJ) |
| Mud crab (Scylla tranquebarica) | Q005 · PDF p. 67 | 1 | 10.00 g | 0.55 g | 45 kcal (190 kJ) |
| Squid, black (Loligo sp.) | R004 · PDF p. 67 | 1 | 16.10 g | 1.07 g | 80 kcal (335 kJ) |
| Squid, red (Loligo duvaucelii) | R006 · PDF p. 68 | 2 | 16.25 g | 1.44 g | 79 kcal (329 kJ) |
| Oyster (Crassostrea sp.) | Q006 · PDF p. 67 | 1 | 9.51 g | 2.44 g | 60 kcal (252 kJ) |
The conversions: S008 380 / 4.184 = 90.82, so 91 kcal; S009 297 / 4.184 = 70.98, so 71 kcal; S010 284 / 4.184 = 67.88, so 68 kcal; Q007 273 / 4.184 = 65.25, so 65 kcal; Q008 270 / 4.184 = 64.53, so 65 kcal; Q002 283 / 4.184 = 67.64, so 68 kcal; Q005 190 / 4.184 = 45.41, so 45 kcal; R004 335 / 4.184 = 80.07, so 80 kcal; R006 329 / 4.184 = 78.63, so 79 kcal; Q006 252 / 4.184 = 60.23, so 60 kcal.
SR Legacy: per portion
The SR Legacy table of USDA FoodData Central gives each record's household portions with a gram weight on the record page. Each figure below is our arithmetic: kcal per 100 g times the grams in the portion, divided by 100, rounded to the nearest kcal with half rounding up. Every portion weight is printed on the record page, none is ours. The record names, including "may contain additives to retain moisture", are the dataset's own.
| Food (SR Legacy record name) | Source | Per 100 g: kcal · protein · fat · carbs | Portion printed on the record | kcal per portion | Protein · fat · carbs |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Crustaceans, shrimp, mixed species, raw (may contain additives to retain moisture) | SR Legacy 174210 | 71 kcal · 13.6 g · 1.01 g · 0.91 g | 4 large, 28 g | 20 kcal | 3.8 g · 0.3 g · 0.3 g |
| Crustaceans, shrimp, mixed species, cooked, moist heat (may contain additives to retain moisture) | SR Legacy 171971 | 119 kcal · 22.8 g · 1.7 g · 1.52 g | 4 large, 22 g | 26 kcal | 5.0 g · 0.4 g · 0.3 g |
| Mollusks, squid, mixed species, raw | SR Legacy 174223 | 92 kcal · 15.6 g · 1.38 g · 3.08 g | 3 oz, 85 g | 78 kcal | 13.3 g · 1.2 g · 2.6 g |
| Crustaceans, crab, blue, cooked, moist heat | SR Legacy 174205 | 83 kcal · 17.9 g · 0.74 g · 0 g | 1 cup, flaked and pieces, 118 g | 98 kcal | 21.1 g · 0.9 g · 0.0 g |
| Mollusks, oyster, eastern, wild, raw | SR Legacy 171978 | 51 kcal · 5.71 g · 1.71 g · 2.72 g | 6 medium, 84 g | 43 kcal | 4.8 g · 1.4 g · 2.3 g |
The sums: shrimp raw 71 × 28 / 100 = 19.88, so 20 kcal; shrimp cooked 119 × 22 / 100 = 26.18, so 26 kcal; squid raw 92 × 85 / 100 = 78.2, so 78 kcal; blue crab cooked 83 × 118 / 100 = 97.94, so 98 kcal; oyster raw 51 × 84 / 100 = 42.84, so 43 kcal. Protein, fat and carbohydrate are the same arithmetic on the per 100 g figures, rounded to 0.1 g with half rounding up.
Other portions printed on the SR Legacy records
The same arithmetic on the portions not used above:
| Food (SR Legacy record name) | Source | Portion printed on the record | kcal per portion |
|---|---|---|---|
| Crustaceans, shrimp, mixed species, raw (may contain additives to retain moisture) | SR Legacy 174210 | 1 medium, 6 g | 4 kcal |
| Crustaceans, shrimp, mixed species, raw (may contain additives to retain moisture) | SR Legacy 174210 | 1 small, 5 g | 4 kcal |
| Crustaceans, shrimp, mixed species, raw (may contain additives to retain moisture) | SR Legacy 174210 | 3 oz, 85 g | 60 kcal |
| Crustaceans, shrimp, mixed species, cooked, moist heat (may contain additives to retain moisture) | SR Legacy 171971 | 3 oz, 85 g | 101 kcal |
| Mollusks, squid, mixed species, raw | SR Legacy 174223 | 1 oz, boneless, 28.35 g | 26 kcal |
| Crustaceans, crab, blue, cooked, moist heat | SR Legacy 174205 | 3 oz, 85 g | 71 kcal |
| Crustaceans, crab, blue, cooked, moist heat | SR Legacy 174205 | 1 cup, not packed, 135 g | 112 kcal |
| Crustaceans, crab, blue, cooked, moist heat | SR Legacy 174205 | 1 oz, 28.35 g | 24 kcal |
| Mollusks, oyster, eastern, wild, raw | SR Legacy 171978 | 1 cup, 248 g | 126 kcal |
The sums: shrimp raw 6 g: 71 × 6 / 100 = 4.26, so 4 kcal; shrimp raw 5 g: 71 × 5 / 100 = 3.55, so 4 kcal; shrimp raw 85 g: 71 × 85 / 100 = 60.35, so 60 kcal; shrimp cooked 85 g: 119 × 85 / 100 = 101.15, so 101 kcal; squid raw 28.35 g: 92 × 28.35 / 100 = 26.082, so 26 kcal; blue crab cooked 85 g: 83 × 85 / 100 = 70.55, so 71 kcal; blue crab cooked 135 g: 83 × 135 / 100 = 112.05, so 112 kcal; blue crab cooked 28.35 g: 83 × 28.35 / 100 = 23.5305, so 24 kcal; oyster raw 248 g: 51 × 248 / 100 = 126.48, so 126 kcal.
What stands out in the numbers
- IFCT per 100 g, raw: mud crab 45 kcal, oyster 60, tiger prawns (orange and brown) 65 and 65, sea crab and tiger prawns (Macrobrachium) 68 and 68, small prawns 71, red and black squid 79 and 80, and big prawns 91.
- Protein per 100 g, IFCT: from 9.51 g (oyster) and 10.00 g (mud crab) to 19.24 g (big prawns), as printed.
- The SR Legacy shrimp records print 71 kcal raw and 119 kcal cooked, moist heat, per 100 g. The record pages print water at 83 g raw and 71.6 g cooked per 100 g. Our reading: these are different states of the food and should not be mixed in one log.
- The IFCT prawn rows differ from each other. Big prawns (S008) print 19.24 g of protein and 380 kJ per 100 g against 14.25 g and 270 kJ for orange tiger prawns (Q008).
Why these are reference rows, not your plate
- Raw rows, no dish. The IFCT rows are raw. The SR Legacy rows are raw or cooked by moist heat, as each record name says. No row here is a prawn curry, a fried prawn, a crab masala or any dish with oil and masala, so this page gives no number for those.
- Single-region rows. Seven of the ten IFCT rows are a single region. The page says so on every row; our existing fish protein guide uses only IFCT rows averaged over 2 or more regions.
- Different names, different species. IFCT 2017 calls its rows prawns and gives a species in brackets; the SR Legacy records are named shrimp, mixed species. This page does not merge them.
- Edible portion. The IFCT figures are per 100 g edible portion, so weigh the cleaned meat, not the shell or head.
- For a packaged product, the pack wins. This page uses no pack labels.
How to log it so the numbers hold
- Log by weight. A 150 g helping of raw squid on the SR Legacy record is 92 × 150 / 100 = 138 kcal by our arithmetic.
- Log oil and masala separately. Our spoon guide gives a level teaspoon of oil or ghee.
- Log the rice or roti separately. Our cooked rice guide gives a cup of cooked rice.
- Do not mix datasets inside one day. If you log a prawn from IFCT, do not switch to an SR Legacy shrimp for the same meal.
Where NYUS fits (our app)
We make NYUS, so read this as ours. NYUS is an AI fitness and nutrition coach in early access on Android, with no ads and no data selling. You log foods yourself by searching 8,900+ Indian and global foods or by barcode, and a weekly check-in adjusts your calories, macros and step goal once enough is logged. Barcode coverage of Indian packaged foods is not complete, so search by name when a scan finds nothing.
What this page leaves out
- A calorie, protein or fat target, and any claim about what these foods do to your weight or health: we have not looked up one for any person, so we give none. If you have a medical condition, ask your doctor or dietitian.
- Any named brand, pack label or FSSAI figure: not used, so the page does not mix label numbers with the records above.
- Prawn curry, fried or masala prawns, crab curry, calamari and other cooked dishes: none is among the ten IFCT rows or five SR Legacy records used, so no number here.
- IFCT rows for lobster, clam, octopus, marine fish and the other freshwater fish: not used here; our fish protein guide covers the fish rows averaged over 2 or more regions.
- Nutrients beyond energy, protein, fat and carbohydrate, including sodium and cholesterol: not covered here.

How many calories are in prawns per 100 g?
By IFCT 2017 Table 1 (raw, per 100 g), the prawn rows run from 65 kcal (Tiger Prawns, orange, Q008, 270 kJ) to 91 kcal (Prawns, big, S008, 380 kJ), with 71 kcal for small prawns (S009, 3 regions) and 68 kcal for tiger prawns (S010, 2 regions). IFCT prints energy in kilojoules, and the kcal are our conversion at 4.184 kJ per kcal.
Are prawns and shrimp the same here?
This guide keeps them apart. IFCT 2017 names its rows prawns, with a species in brackets, and the SR Legacy table names its records shrimp, mixed species. SR Legacy 174210 (raw) prints 71 kcal per 100 g and SR Legacy 171971 (cooked, moist heat) prints 119 kcal per 100 g. We do not merge the two datasets or say which species a record covers beyond its printed name.
How many calories are in crab?
IFCT 2017 Table 1 has Crab, sea (Q002) at 68 kcal and Mud crab (Q005) at 45 kcal per 100 g raw, one region each. The SR Legacy record 174205 (Crustaceans, crab, blue, cooked, moist heat) prints 83 kcal per 100 g and lists 1 cup, flaked and pieces, as 118 g, about 98 kcal by our arithmetic.
How many calories are in squid?
IFCT 2017 Table 1 has Squid, black (R004) at 80 kcal and Squid, red (R006, 2 regions) at 79 kcal per 100 g raw. The SR Legacy record 174223 (Mollusks, squid, mixed species, raw) prints 92 kcal per 100 g and lists 3 oz as 85 g, about 78 kcal.
How many calories are in oysters?
IFCT 2017 Table 1 has Oyster (Crassostrea sp., Q006) at 60 kcal per 100 g raw, one region. The SR Legacy record 171978 (Mollusks, oyster, eastern, wild, raw) prints 51 kcal per 100 g and lists 6 medium as 84 g, about 43 kcal by our arithmetic (51 x 84 / 100 = 42.84).
