Join the NYUS waitlist"Grouper calories", "grouper calories per 100 g" and "grouper fish calories" are searched in India, and the Indian Food Composition Tables (IFCT 2017, ICMR-NIN) list four grouper rows (genus Epinephelus). This guide gives three of them, all raw and per 100 g: Kalava (Epinephelus coioides), Nalla bontha (Epinephelus sp.) and Raai vanthu (Epinephelus chlorostigma), each a single-region row, with the place IFCT collected each sample. The fourth, Gobro, is named on our protein in fish guides and is not repeated. IFCT prints no weight per ounce, fillet or fish, so there is no per-ounce or per-fillet figure. Other IFCT fish rows (bhetki, tilapia, tuna, karimeen, milkfish, crab and lobster) are in our Indian fish calories guide, protein per 100 g for rohu, catla, hilsa and Gobro in our protein in fish guide and in Hindi in our machhli protein guide.
The short answer
By IFCT 2017, raw Kalava is 374 kJ per 100 g, which is 89 kcal; raw Nalla bontha 364 kJ, 87 kcal; and raw Raai vanthu 410 kJ, 98 kcal. IFCT prints energy in kJ only, so the kcal are our conversion (kJ divided by 4.184, rounded to a whole kcal). Our reading: the three rows are 46 kJ apart per 100 g, Raai vanthu has the highest energy and fat (2.17 g), Nalla bontha the lowest energy and fat (0.72 g) and the most protein (19.82 g), and protein differs by only 0.44 g across the three; every row is raw.
IFCT 2017: per 100 g, raw
Figures are as the IFCT 2017 PDF prints them (Table 1, PDF pages 64 and 65): moisture, protein and total fat in g per 100 g of edible portion, and energy in kJ. The kcal is our conversion. The "Regions" number is how many regions Table 1 counts for the row (1 for all three), followed by the place of collection IFCT prints in its appendix of food names (PDF pages 533, 536 and 540). The appendix prints no other-language names for these fish rows. IFCT 2017 says all its data except poultry and egg is for raw food (PDF p. 27), so these are raw weights. IFCT prints no portion weights, so there is no printed-portion table on this page.
| Food (IFCT 2017 row name) | Source | Regions · place of collection | Moisture · protein · fat | Energy |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Kalava (Epinephelus coioides) | IFCT 2017 P023 | 1 · Mandapam | 80.02 g · 19.38 g · 1.20 g | 374 kJ = 89 kcal |
| Nalla bontha (Epinephelus sp.) | IFCT 2017 P042 | 1 · Vizag | 79.32 g · 19.82 g · 0.72 g | 364 kJ = 87 kcal |
| Raai vanthu (Epinephelus chlorostigma) | IFCT 2017 P062 | 1 · Vizag | 79.95 g · 19.39 g · 2.17 g | 410 kJ = 98 kcal |
100 g, 250 g and 500 g of raw grouper
Shops sell fish by 250 g and 500 g, which IFCT does not print. These three weights are ours: each cell is the IFCT kJ figure times the grams, divided by 100 and by 4.184, as kcal, with protein and fat as the IFCT per 100 g figure times the grams divided by 100, shown to 0.1 with half rounding up. They are raw edible portion, not a grilled or fried fish, and a whole fish bought with head, bones and skin weighs more than its edible portion; we do not say by how much.
| Food (IFCT 2017 row name) | Source | 100 g: kcal · protein · fat | 250 g: kcal · protein · fat | 500 g: kcal · protein · fat |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Kalava (Epinephelus coioides) | IFCT 2017 P023 | 89.4 kcal · 19.4 g · 1.2 g | 223.5 kcal · 48.5 g · 3.0 g | 446.9 kcal · 96.9 g · 6.0 g |
| Nalla bontha (Epinephelus sp.) | IFCT 2017 P042 | 87.0 kcal · 19.8 g · 0.7 g | 217.5 kcal · 49.6 g · 1.8 g | 435.0 kcal · 99.1 g · 3.6 g |
| Raai vanthu (Epinephelus chlorostigma) | IFCT 2017 P062 | 98.0 kcal · 19.4 g · 2.2 g | 245.0 kcal · 48.5 g · 5.4 g | 490.0 kcal · 97.0 g · 10.9 g |
The weight sums: P023 374 kJ × 100 / 100 / 4.184 = 89.3881, so 89.4 kcal; P023 374 kJ × 250 / 100 / 4.184 = 223.4704, so 223.5 kcal; P023 374 kJ × 500 / 100 / 4.184 = 446.9407, so 446.9 kcal; P042 364 kJ × 100 / 100 / 4.184 = 86.9981, so 87.0 kcal; P042 364 kJ × 250 / 100 / 4.184 = 217.4952, so 217.5 kcal; P042 364 kJ × 500 / 100 / 4.184 = 434.9904, so 435.0 kcal; P062 410 kJ × 100 / 100 / 4.184 = 97.9924, so 98.0 kcal; P062 410 kJ × 250 / 100 / 4.184 = 244.9809, so 245.0 kcal; P062 410 kJ × 500 / 100 / 4.184 = 489.9618, so 490.0 kcal.
What stands out in the numbers
- Energy per 100 g, highest first: P062 (Raai vanthu (Epinephelus chlorostigma)) 410 kJ = 98 kcal, P023 (Kalava (Epinephelus coioides)) 374 kJ = 89 kcal, P042 (Nalla bontha (Epinephelus sp.)) 364 kJ = 87 kcal.
- Rows to check by hand: Raai vanthu (P062) prints 2.17 g of fat against 0.72 g for Nalla bontha (P042); Nalla bontha prints the most protein (19.82 g) and Kalava (P023) the least (19.38 g) and the most moisture (80.02 g); we show them as printed and do not adjust them.
Why these are reference rows, not your fish
- Names are IFCT's. The row names are the IFCT 2017 names with the scientific name; Nalla bontha is listed only as Epinephelus sp. We do not say that a fish sold in a market as grouper, kalava, bontha or under another local name is the same row.
- One sample set per row. Table 1 counts each of the three rows as one region, so each is one sample set, not an Indian average; the place of collection is listed so you can see where.
- Raw only. IFCT has no cooked rows for these fish. A grill, a fry or a curry changes the number by oil, masala and water loss, which this page does not give.
- Edible portion, no per-fish weight. IFCT figures are per 100 g of edible portion and IFCT prints no weight per fish, per fillet or per ounce, so those questions have no IFCT answer.
- Energy is converted. IFCT prints kJ; kcal is our kJ / 4.184, rounded.
How to log it so the numbers hold
- Weigh the cleaned flesh, and say raw. 100 g of raw Kalava (our example weight, not an IFCT value) on IFCT P023 is 374 × 100 / 100 / 4.184 = 89.4, so 89.4 kcal.
- Add the cooking separately. Oil, ghee and sugar are in our ghee, oil and sugar guide.
- Do not mix datasets inside one day. If you log grouper from IFCT, keep to that row for the same meal rather than switching to a USDA fillet row.
Where NYUS fits (our app)
We make NYUS, so read this as ours. NYUS is an AI fitness and nutrition coach in early access on Android, with no ads and no data selling. You log foods yourself by searching 8,900+ Indian and global foods or by barcode, and a weekly check-in adjusts your calories, macros and step goal once enough is logged. Barcode coverage of Indian packaged foods is not complete, so search by name when a scan finds nothing.
What this page leaves out
- A calorie target, and any claim about what fish does to your body: we have not looked up one for any person, so we give none. If you have a medical condition or are pregnant, ask your doctor or dietitian.
- Grilled or fried grouper, fish curry and any restaurant or maker's version: no row used here.
- A per-ounce, per-fillet or per-fish figure: IFCT prints no weight, so we give none.
- The IFCT 2017 grouper rows are every marine fish row whose name carries the genus Epinephelus: P015 Gobro, P023 Kalava, P042 Nalla bontha and P062 Raai vanthu, four in all; three are used here and Gobro (P015, 2 regions, collected at Mumbai and Goa) is left out because our other pages already name it.
- Other marine fish and shellfish rows: swordfish, shark, stingray, catfish and the rest are separate foods and are not covered here.
- Nutrients beyond energy, protein and fat (and the moisture IFCT prints): not covered here.

The moisture, protein, fat and kJ values and the places of collection are exactly as printed in the IFCT 2017 PDF. The names in the first column are IFCT's own row names.

How many calories are in grouper per 100 g?
IFCT 2017 has four grouper rows (genus Epinephelus); the three on this page run from 364 kJ (87 kcal, Nalla bontha) to 410 kJ (98 kcal, Raai vanthu) per 100 g raw, with Kalava at 374 kJ (89 kcal). The fourth, Gobro (P015), is named on our protein in fish guides and is not repeated here.
How many calories are in Kalava (grouper) per 100 g?
IFCT 2017 P023 (Kalava (Epinephelus coioides)) prints 374 kJ, which is 89 kcal, with 19.38 g protein and 1.20 g fat per 100 g. IFCT collected this Kalava (Epinephelus coioides) at Mandapam.
How many calories are in Nalla bontha per 100 g?
IFCT 2017 P042 (Nalla bontha (Epinephelus sp.)) prints 364 kJ, which is 87 kcal, with 19.82 g protein and 0.72 g fat per 100 g. IFCT lists this row as "Epinephelus sp." (the species is not named), collected at Vizag.
How many calories are in Raai vanthu per 100 g?
IFCT 2017 P062 (Raai vanthu (Epinephelus chlorostigma)) prints 410 kJ, which is 98 kcal, with 19.39 g protein and 2.17 g fat per 100 g. IFCT collected this Raai vanthu (Epinephelus chlorostigma) at Vizag.
How many calories are in grouper per ounce, per fillet or 250 g?
IFCT prints no weight per fish, per fillet, per ounce or per piece, so the "per ounce", "8 oz" and "per fish" questions have no IFCT answer and we give no figure for them. The only weight-based answers are per 100 g and the 250 g and 500 g arithmetic on this page: Kalava is 223.5 kcal for 250 g and 446.9 kcal for 500 g, Nalla bontha 217.5 kcal and 435.0 kcal, and Raai vanthu 245.0 kcal and 490.0 kcal (our arithmetic on raw edible portion).
Are these raw or cooked grouper calories?
IFCT 2017 says all its data except poultry and egg is for raw food (PDF p. 27), so every row on this page is raw, edible portion only. A grill, fry or curry changes the number, and IFCT has no cooked fish rows; use the row as the raw weight and add the oil and masala yourself.
Why does each row show one region?
Table 1 counts each of the three rows as 1 region, so each is one sample set from the single place IFCT lists in its appendix (Mandapam for Kalava, Vizag for Nalla bontha and Raai vanthu), not an Indian average. The appendix prints no other-language names for these three fish rows; the names Kalava, Nalla bontha and Raai vanthu are the IFCT row names.
