Short answer: ICMR-NIN's Dietary Guidelines for Indians 2024 say weight reduction should be gradual, that a reduction of half a kilogram of body weight per week is considered safe, and that approaches of rapid weight loss should be avoided (PDF p. 81). At that pace four weeks is 2.0 kg and 30 days is about 2.1 kg (our arithmetic: 0.5 kg x 30 / 7). The DGI also says weight-reduction diets should not be less than 1,000 kcal a day and should provide all nutrients. This is general information, not medical advice.

"How much weight can I lose in a month?" is searched with promises of 5, 10 or 15 kg that no source supports. India's own reference is the Dietary Guidelines for Indians 2024 from the ICMR-National Institute of Nutrition. This page says what it states about the pace of weight loss, turns that into weeks and days, works the deficit limits through on the DGI's own reference menu, and gives the Asian BMI weight range by height. It is for adults who have been told, or have good reason to think, that they are above a healthy weight: if you are under 18.5 BMI, pregnant, breastfeeding, a child or teenager, or have a medical condition, do not use a one-month target and speak to a doctor.

What ICMR-NIN says about the pace of weight loss

The DGI gives the safe pace (half a kilogram a week) and the typical deficit (500 to 750 kcal a day) as separate statements and does not convert one into the other. We do not add a kilocalories-per-kilogram conversion of our own. Our TDEE guide uses a common rule of thumb that a 500 kcal a day deficit is about 0.5 kg a week; that is an estimate, not a DGI figure.

What a month looks like at the safe pace

These figures are the DGI's half a kilogram a week multiplied out (our arithmetic). They are a ceiling for a safe pace, not a promise of what you will lose.

The deficit limits, worked on the DGI's reference menu

The DGI's Figure 9.2 shows a suggested diet for a normally nourished sedentary woman of 55 kg and BMI 18.5 to 23 that provides 1,660 kcal a day (PDF p. 82). Using that menu as a worked illustration (not your numbers), the two DGI limits work out like this: a 40% energy deficit of 1,660 kcal is 664 kcal (a day of 996 kcal), and the 1,000 kcal floor allows a deficit of at most 660 kcal a day, so the 750 kcal end of the typical range would take that day to 910 kcal, below the floor.

Daily deficit (kcal)Over 28 days (kcal)Over 30 days (kcal)Day's intake on the 1,660 kcal reference menu

750 (DGI range end)21,00022,500910 (below the DGI floor)

The deficit columns are the deficit multiplied by the days (our arithmetic). Your own energy needs depend on weight, height, age and activity; our TDEE calculator estimates them, and a doctor or dietitian can set a deficit for you.

Weight range for the Asian BMI cut-offs

The DGI says BMI is weight in kilograms divided by the square of height in metres, that for Asians the recommended BMI is 18.5 to 23, that over 23 to 27.5 is overweight and above 27.5 is obesity (PDF pp. 79 to 81). It adds that a waist circumference above 90 cm for men and 80 cm for women is associated with increased risk of several chronic lifestyle diseases (PDF p. 81). The weights below are BMI times height squared (our arithmetic, to 0.1 kg). Use our BMI calculator for your own height.

Where NYUS fits (our app)

We make NYUS, so read this section as ours. NYUS is an AI fitness and nutrition coach in early access on Android, with no ads and no data selling. It builds a workout and diet plan around your goal, logs your meals against 8,900+ foods with macros, and a weekly check-in adjusts your calories, macros and step goal once enough is logged. It does not change your training plan automatically. This page's figures are not built into the app and it does not promise a weight-loss amount.

If your real problem is sticking to a plan, a coach with a weekly check-in is one honest option. Join the NYUS waitlist: a 30-day free trial, then plans from ₹499 for one month, paid once with no auto-renewal, no card needed to start.

Frequently asked questions

How much weight can I lose in 1 month?

ICMR-NIN's Dietary Guidelines for Indians 2024 consider a reduction of half a kilogram of body weight per week to be safe (PDF p. 81). By our arithmetic that is 2.0 kg in four weeks and about 2.1 kg in 30 days. How much you lose in practice depends on your body, your diet and your activity. This is general information, not medical advice.

Can I lose 10 kg in a month?

The DGI calls half a kilogram a week safe and says approaches of rapid weight loss should be avoided (PDF p. 81). Losing 10 kg in 4 weeks is 2.5 kg a week, 5 times that pace (our arithmetic). If you are told you need to lose a lot of weight, ask a doctor or registered dietitian for a plan instead of a one-month target. This is general information, not medical advice.

How many calories should I cut a day to lose weight?

The DGI describes typical energy-deficient weight-loss diets as a deficit of 500 to 750 kcal a day, and says not to go beyond a 40% energy deficit of your daily energy needs (PDF p. 83). It also says weight-reduction diets should not be less than 1,000 kcal a day (PDF p. 81). On the DGI's own reference menu for a sedentary woman (1,660 kcal, PDF p. 82) those two limits allow at most 660 kcal a day of deficit, so the 750 end of the range would take that day to 910 kcal (our arithmetic; a worked illustration, not your numbers). This is general information, not medical advice.

What is the minimum calories per day for weight loss?

The DGI says weight-reduction diets should not be less than 1,000 kcal a day and should provide all nutrients (PDF p. 81), and that the energy deficit should not go beyond 40% of daily energy needs (PDF p. 83). Your own needs depend on your weight, height, age and activity, so ask a doctor or dietitian before eating near that floor. This is general information, not medical advice.

How much weight can I lose in a week?

The DGI considers a reduction of half a kilogram of body weight per week to be safe (PDF p. 81). It does not give a faster safe figure. This is general information, not medical advice.

What BMI should an Indian aim for?

The DGI says that for Asians the recommended BMI is between 18.5 and 23 kg/m2, because they tend to have a higher percentage of body fat at a given BMI; BMI above 23 up to 27.5 is overweight and above 27.5 is obesity by the Asian cut-offs (PDF pp. 79 to 81). BMI is weight in kilograms divided by height in metres squared (PDF p. 79). Our BMI calculator and the weight table above apply those cut-offs. This is general information, not medical advice.

Do I need exercise to lose weight in a month?

The DGI says regular physical activity and yoga are crucial to maintain good health and weight (PDF p. 81), and recommends adults do a minimum of 30 to 60 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity a day for at least five days a week, or 15 minutes of vigorous activity a day for at least five days, plus muscle strengthening on at least two days a week (PDF p. 87). It gives no figure for how much weight exercise alone removes. This is general information, not medical advice.

All arithmetic uses integer tenths and rounds half up. The DGI does not convert a daily deficit into kilograms and gives no month target; we add no such conversion.
