"Gajar halwa calories", with "per 100g", "1 katori", "1 bowl" and "and protein", is searched in India, and the answers online differ. No primary table has a gajar halwa record: IFCT 2017, the Indian Food Composition Tables from ICMR-NIN, prints raw foods (its few cooked rows are boiled and omelette eggs and roasted vermicelli) and no gajar halwa, halwa or other cooked sweet, no refined (granulated) sugar row, and no ghee energy row (ghee appears only in Table 12, the fatty acid profile of edible oils and fats, PDF pp. 474 and 475, which prints no energy), and USDA FoodData Central SR Legacy has no gajar halwa record. So this page does not quote a number. It works one serving out line by line: the grated carrot, whole cow milk, khoa, cashew, golden raisins and cardamom from named IFCT 2017 rows and the sugar and ghee from USDA records, with weights that are our assumptions and the sugar and ghee shown apart so you can see what they add, once as a home-style serving and once as a rich khoa-and-ghee serving. They are estimates, shown so you can change the weights to match your pot. For the kheer-type sweets whose records we could work from see our kheer and pudding records guide, for the raw carrot rows our carrot cup guide, and for the spoon values our ghee, oil and sugar guide.

The short answer

By our working, one serving of home-style gajar halwa (150 g raw grated carrot, 100 g whole cow milk, 20 g sugar, 5 g ghee, cashew 5 g and green cardamom 0.5 g) is about 275.5 kcal and 5.6 g protein, and the rich serving (150 g raw grated carrot, 150 g whole cow milk, 30 g khoa, 30 g sugar, 15 g ghee, cashew 10 g, golden raisins 5 g and green cardamom 0.5 g) is about 579.4 kcal and 13.2 g protein. Across 100 to 200 g of raw carrot the home-style runs 213.9 to 337.1 kcal with 0 to 10 g of ghee and the rich 517.8 to 641.0 kcal with 10 to 20 g, with the milk, sugar and nuts in every cell. These are estimates from the weights below, not measured values, not from a gajar halwa record and not a sweet-shop figure. Our reading: the parts of the home-style main case rank the sugar 77.4 kcal, the milk 72.9 kcal, the carrot 49.8 kcal, the ghee 45.0 kcal, the cashew and cardamom 30.4 kcal; the parts of the rich main case rank the ghee 135.0 kcal, the sugar 116.1 kcal, the milk 109.3 kcal, the khoa 94.8 kcal, the cashew, raisins and cardamom 74.4 kcal, the carrot 49.8 kcal; and the rich serving is 303.9 kcal above the home-style one at the same 150 g of carrot.

IFCT 2017 rows used, per 100 g

IFCT 2017 Table 1 prints, per 100 g edible portion, water, protein, ash, total fat, total dietary fibre, insoluble and soluble fibre, carbohydrate and energy in kJ, where the row has them (the milk and khoa rows print fewer columns). We read these 6 rows from the PDF text on 30 October 2026, as the mean of the regions shown (PDF pages in the Sources); the kcal is ours (kJ divided by 4.184, to 0.1). IFCT prints no portion weights; the carrot row is raw carrot, so we count raw weight, and the cooked weight of a gajar halwa is not printed in any table. L002 is whole cow milk and L004 is khoa; Table 1 has no granulated sugar row.

The sugar and the ghee: USDA SR Legacy, per 100 g

IFCT 2017 has no granulated sugar row and no ghee energy row (ghee appears only in its Table 12 of fatty acid percentages, which prints no energy), so these come from USDA FoodData Central SR Legacy; they are US records. Energy is USDA's kcal with the kJ beside it; water, protein, total fat and carbohydrate (by difference) are in g, then fibre (g), total sugars (g) and sodium (mg), all per 100 g.

The data-type label on each USDA field, as the records show it

USDA's record page shows a data-type label beside some fields and none beside others. This table copies what each record shows, read field by field from the nutrient table of the record page; "no label shown" means the record prints no label there, and "not printed" means the record has no row for that field. We do not interpret the labels beyond printing them. IFCT 2017 prints no such labels.

The household portions USDA prints for the sugar and the ghee

These are the entries in each record's Measures list, as printed; the other entry is 100 g. The sugar record prints a cup, a cube, a teaspoon and a packet; the ghee record prints only 100 g, so this page counts both in grams, and the gram weights used for the halwa are our assumptions, not USDA's. The kcal in the last column is ours: the printed kcal per 100 g times the grams, divided by 100, shown to 0.1.

Food (USDA record name)SourcePortion as USDA prints itEnergy for the portion (our arithmetic)
Sugars, granulatedSR Legacy 1696551 cup (200 g)774.0 kcal
Sugars, granulatedSR Legacy 1696551 serving 1 cube (2.3 g)8.9 kcal
Sugars, granulatedSR Legacy 1696551 tsp (4.2 g)16.3 kcal
Sugars, granulatedSR Legacy 1696551 serving packet (2.8 g)10.8 kcal

The portion sums: 169655 1 cup (200 g): 387 × 200 / 100 = 774.00, so 774.0 kcal; 169655 1 serving 1 cube (2.3 g): 387 × 2.3 / 100 = 8.90, so 8.9 kcal; 169655 1 tsp (4.2 g): 387 × 4.2 / 100 = 16.25, so 16.3 kcal; 169655 1 serving packet (2.8 g): 387 × 2.8 / 100 = 10.84, so 10.8 kcal. By the same arithmetic 20 g of sugar is 77.4 kcal, 30 g 116.1 kcal, and 5 g of ghee is 45.0 kcal, 15 g 135.0 kcal and 20 g 180.0 kcal.

Worked example 1: home-style gajar halwa

Every weight here is our assumption for one serving, counted raw: grated carrot, whole cow milk (all of it counted, although it cooks down), sugar, ghee, cashew and green cardamom. Each IFCT line is the kJ divided by 4.184, times the grams, divided by 100, to 0.1 kcal; each USDA line is the printed kcal per 100 g times the grams, divided by 100; protein is the table's protein per 100 g times the grams, divided by 100. Almonds, pistachios, a khoa topping and silver leaf are not counted.

Sources

The ingredient weights, the kJ to kcal conversions, the line values, the sums, the grids, the portion kcal, the rounding, the comparisons and every sentence starting "Our reading" are NYUS's own assumptions, arithmetic or opinion, not from USDA or IFCT. The IFCT values are the means printed in IFCT 2017 Table 1; the USDA values, data-type labels and Measures-list portions are exactly as shown on the USDA record pages. The names in the first column are the tables' own names.

Frequently asked questions

How many calories are in gajar halwa?

No table prints one. IFCT 2017, the Indian Food Composition Tables from ICMR-NIN, prints raw foods (its few cooked rows are boiled and omelette eggs and roasted vermicelli) and no gajar halwa, halwa or other cooked sweet, no refined (granulated) sugar row, and no ghee energy row (ghee appears only in Table 12, the fatty acid profile of edible oils and fats, PDF pp. 474 and 475, which prints no energy), and USDA FoodData Central SR Legacy has no gajar halwa record. Worked from IFCT rows with USDA granulated sugar and ghee, using weights that are our assumptions, one serving of a home-style gajar halwa made from 150 g raw grated carrot, 100 g whole cow milk, 20 g sugar, 5 g ghee, cashew 5 g and green cardamom 0.5 g comes to 275.5 kcal and 5.6 g protein; a rich khoa-and-ghee version (150 g raw grated carrot, 150 g whole cow milk, 30 g khoa, 30 g sugar, 15 g ghee, cashew 10 g, golden raisins 5 g and green cardamom 0.5 g) comes to 579.4 kcal and 13.2 g protein. Across 100 to 200 g of carrot the home-style runs 213.9 to 337.1 kcal (0 to 10 g of ghee) and the rich 517.8 to 641.0 kcal (10 to 20 g of ghee). These are estimates, not measured values.

How many calories are in 100 g of gajar halwa?

This page does not give one. No table prints a cooked gajar halwa or its weight, and the milk and carrot cook down a great deal, so a per 100 g figure would need a cooked weight we would be making up. The IFCT row is per 100 g of raw orange carrot (33.2 kcal) and the page works from that and from stated weights instead.

How many calories are in 1 katori or 1 bowl of gajar halwa?

The page counts raw ingredient weights, because that is what IFCT prints, so it cannot say how many katori or bowls the 150 g of carrot and the milk make once cooked down. What it gives is the whole serving made from them: 275.5 kcal for the home-style version and 579.4 kcal for the rich one. With 100 g and 200 g of carrot and the same other ingredients it is 258.9 and 292.1 kcal (home-style) and 562.8 and 596.0 kcal (rich).

How much protein is in gajar halwa?

Estimated from table protein per 100 g with our weights: 5.6 g in the home-style main case and 13.2 g in the rich one, of which the 150 g of carrot supplies 1.4 g (IFCT F002: 0.95 g per 100 g) and the milk 3.3 g (100 g, home-style) or 4.9 g (150 g, rich; L002: 3.26 g per 100 g). Across 100 to 200 g of carrot it runs 5.2 to 6.1 g (home-style) and 12.8 to 13.7 g (rich). The khoa, cashew, raisins and cardamom add the rest; the sugar and ghee add none.

Why is a rich khoa-and-ghee gajar halwa higher than a home-style one?

In this working four things differ: the milk (150 g against 100 g, 109.3 kcal against 72.9 kcal; IFCT L002), the khoa (30 g, 94.8 kcal; L004), the sugar (30 g, 116.1 kcal, against 20 g, 77.4 kcal; USDA SR Legacy 169655: 387 kcal per 100 g) and the ghee (15 g, 135.0 kcal, against 5 g, 45.0 kcal; 171314: 900 kcal per 100 g), plus more cashew and some raisins. The carrot is the same 150 g, so the rich version is 303.9 kcal higher. These are our assumed weights, not a measured sweet-shop halwa, and the page gives no sweet-shop figure.

How much do the sugar and ghee add to gajar halwa?

By USDA SR Legacy 169655 each 5 g of granulated sugar is 19.4 kcal, and by 171314 each 5 g of ghee is 45.0 kcal; the ghee record prints no teaspoon weight, so the page counts ghee in grams (the sugar record prints a teaspoon of 4.2 g). In the home-style version the ghee (0 to 10 g) moves it more than the carrot weight (100 to 200 g): 90.0 kcal against 33.2 kcal; in the rich version the ghee (10 to 20 g) moves it more than the carrot weight (100 to 200 g): 90.0 kcal against 33.2 kcal.

Does this include almonds, pistachios, a mawa topping, rabri or ice cream?

No. Only the listed ingredients are counted: carrot, milk, khoa (rich version only), sugar, ghee, cashew, golden raisins (rich version only) and cardamom. Almonds, pistachios, a topping of grated khoa or silver leaf, rabri, cream, ice cream or a condensed-milk shortcut are separate lines you add from their own rows, and no table prints a sweet-shop weight or fat use, so the page gives no sweet-shop figure.

What do Calculated, Analytical and Label claim on the USDA records mean?

USDA's record pages show a data-type label beside some fields and none beside others. The sugar record labels kcal, kJ and carbohydrate Calculated and water, protein, fat, total sugars and sodium Analytical, with no label on fibre; the ghee record labels energy, protein, fat, carbohydrate, fibre, total sugars and sodium "Label claim (back calculated from label by NDL staff; Calculated from label claim/serving (g or %RDI)" and water "Taken from another source--other tables of food composition"; the rest are printed exactly in the label table on this page. The gram kcal values are our arithmetic (printed kcal per 100 g times the grams, divided by 100). IFCT 2017 prints no data-type labels.
