Calories in a Katori of Kheer: What the Records Show

General information: This article is information about food data. No dietitian or doctor has reviewed it, and it is not a substitute for their advice.
Disclosure: NYUS Inc. publishes this guide and makes the NYUS app, which is mentioned once near the end. The numbers below do not depend on it.

Kheer has no row in the food tables this guide uses, so this page does not invent a number for it. It shows what the two datasets do give: the SR Legacy table of USDA FoodData Central has ready-to-eat rice, tapioca and vanilla pudding records and a condensed milk record, each with the portion weights printed on its record page; IFCT 2017, the Indian Food Composition Tables from ICMR-NIN, has no kheer, payasam, rabri, shrikhand or pudding row (we searched all 585 PDF pages), but it has the ingredient rows for raw rice, roasted wheat vermicelli, cow milk and buffalo milk, with 6 regions each. The pudding records are nearest rows, not kheer, and no number here is a recipe.

The short answer

There is no kheer number in either dataset. The nearest SR Legacy row, ready-to-eat rice pudding, prints 108 kcal per 100 g, which is about 99 kcal for its printed 0.5 cup (92 g) and 162 kcal for 150 g, the katori weight in NYUS's own food list (our assumption). Ready-to-eat tapioca pudding prints 130 kcal per 100 g (about 143 kcal for a 110 g container) and condensed milk 321 kcal per 100 g (about 123 kcal for 1 fl oz, 38.2 g). By IFCT 2017 Table 1 (raw, per 100 g, 6 regions each), rice is 356 kcal, roasted wheat vermicelli 340, cow milk 73 and buffalo milk 107. Our reading: a kheer's calories depend on the milk, the amount of rice or vermicelli and the sugar, none of which a pudding record tells you, so weigh your own ingredients if you can.

SR Legacy: per portion

Each figure is our arithmetic: kcal per 100 g times the grams in the portion, divided by 100, rounded to the nearest kcal with half rounding up. Every portion weight is printed on the SR Legacy record page.

The sums: rice pudding 108 × 92 / 100 = 99.36, so 99 kcal; tapioca pudding 130 × 110 / 100 = 143, so 143 kcal; vanilla pudding 130 × 110 / 100 = 143, so 143 kcal; condensed milk 321 × 38.2 / 100 = 122.622, so 123 kcal. Protein, fat and carbohydrate are the same arithmetic on the per 100 g figures, rounded to 0.1 g with half rounding up.

A katori: a weight that is ours

The SR Legacy records print no katori. NYUS's own food list uses 150 g for one katori of rice kheer or seviyan kheer. That weight is our assumption, not a measurement and not a dataset value, and the pudding rows below are nearest records, not kheer. Weigh yours and scale from the per 100 g column.

The sums: rice pudding 150 g: 108 × 150 / 100 = 162, so 162 kcal; tapioca pudding 150 g: 130 × 150 / 100 = 195, so 195 kcal; vanilla pudding 150 g: 130 × 150 / 100 = 195, so 195 kcal.

IFCT 2017: the ingredient rows

IFCT 2017, Table 1 (Proximate Principles), per 100 g edible portion. IFCT 2017 says all its data except poultry and egg is for raw food (PDF p. 27), so the rice and vermicelli are dry, uncooked rows. IFCT prints energy in kilojoules; kcal is our conversion at 1 kcal = 4.184 kJ, rounded to the nearest kcal with half rounding up. All four rows are averages of 6 regions. These are ingredient rows only; this guide does not add them into a kheer, because the quantities in a kheer are in neither dataset.

The conversions: A015 1491 / 4.184 = 356.36, so 356 kcal; A024 1423 / 4.184 = 340.11, so 340 kcal; L002 305 / 4.184 = 72.90, so 73 kcal; L001 449 / 4.184 = 107.31, so 107 kcal.

Where NYUS fits (our app)

We make NYUS, so read this as ours. NYUS is an AI fitness and nutrition coach in early access on Android, with no ads and no data selling. You log foods yourself by searching 8,900+ Indian and global foods or by barcode, and a weekly check-in adjusts your calories, macros and step goal once enough is logged. Barcode coverage of Indian packaged foods is not complete, so search by name when a scan finds nothing.

Sources

The kJ to kcal conversions, the per portion figures, the sums, the rounding, the 150 g katori (NYUS's food list), the 200 g example, the comparisons and every sentence starting "Our reading" are NYUS's own arithmetic, assumption or opinion, not from IFCT or USDA. The IFCT values and the SR Legacy portion weights are as printed in those datasets. The names in the first column are the datasets' own row and record names.

Frequently asked questions

How many calories are in a katori of kheer?

This guide gives no kheer number, because neither IFCT 2017 nor the SR Legacy records used here has a kheer row. The nearest SR Legacy record is 168782 (Puddings, rice, ready-to-eat), 108 kcal per 100 g, which comes to 162 kcal for 150 g by our arithmetic (108 x 150 / 100 = 162). The 150 g katori is our assumption, and the record is not described as kheer.

What does the rice pudding record list as a portion?

SR Legacy 168782 (Puddings, rice, ready-to-eat) lists 0.5 cup as 92 g (99 kcal by our arithmetic, 108 x 92 / 100 = 99.36), 1 cup as 172 g, a 4 oz pudding cup as 113 g and a 5 oz can as 142 g. The record names no recipe, so it is a nearest row, not a kheer.

What do IFCT 2017 and SR Legacy give for the ingredients?

IFCT 2017 Table 1 (raw, per 100 g, 6 regions each) prints rice, raw, milled (A015) at 1491 kJ, 356 kcal by our conversion at 4.184 kJ per kcal; wheat vermicelli, roasted (A024) at 340 kcal; whole cow milk (L002) at 73 kcal and whole buffalo milk (L001) at 107 kcal. SR Legacy 171275 (Milk, canned, condensed, sweetened) prints 321 kcal per 100 g and lists 1 fl oz as 38.2 g. This guide does not add them into a kheer, because the quantities are in neither dataset.

Is there a number for rabri, shrikhand or rasmalai?

No. IFCT 2017 has no kheer, payasam, rabri, shrikhand or pudding row (we searched all 585 PDF pages), and this guide uses no SR Legacy record for them, so it gives no number.

Why is the tapioca pudding row there?

SR Legacy 169614 (Puddings, tapioca, ready-to-eat) prints 130 kcal per 100 g and lists 1 container refrigerated 4 oz as 110 g, about 143 kcal by our arithmetic. It is the dataset's tapioca pudding record; it is not described as sabudana kheer, so treat it as a nearest row only.

Can I log kheer in NYUS?

NYUS is our app. You log foods yourself by searching 8,900+ Indian and global foods or by barcode; log kheer by its weight, and use a home recipe's own ingredients if you know them. NYUS is in early access on Android: 30-day free trial, then plans from ₹499 for one month, paid once with no auto-renewal, no card needed to start.
