Cocoa powder, chocolate drink mix and malted drink powder go into a glass of milk by the spoon or the sachet, and the number depends on which record you mean. This guide gives nine records from the SR Legacy table of USDA FoodData Central (two cocoa powders, four dry drink mixes and three made-up drinks), each with the spoon, serving, cup or fluid-ounce weight printed on its record page. IFCT 2017, the Indian Food Composition Tables from ICMR-NIN, has no cocoa, chocolate or malted drink row (the PDF text has none), so this page uses SR Legacy only. Our chocolate and biscuit guide leaves cocoa powder and drinking chocolate out, and this one covers them.

The short answer

By the SR Legacy records, 1 tablespoon (5.4 g) of unsweetened cocoa powder is 12.3 kcal. A dry malted drink serving (21 g, chocolate) is 86.3 kcal, and the record for the same drink prepared with whole milk prints a 1 cup (8 fl oz, 265 g) of 225.3 kcal. The records print 225.3 kcal for the 265 g cup prepared with whole milk and 86.3 kcal for the 21 g dry serving.

SR Legacy: per 100 g

Every figure below is exactly as the record page shows it. The record names are the dataset's own. "Total sugars" is the record's own line. The last three records are made-up drinks, so their per 100 g figures are for the drink, not the powder.

SR Legacy: per printed portion

Each figure is our arithmetic on exact weights: kcal or total sugars per 100 g times the grams, divided by 100, with the exact product in the sums line and the result shown to 0.1 with half rounding up. Every weight below is printed on the SR Legacy record page; none is ours.

The sums: 169593 228 × 5.4 / 100 = 12.312, so 12.3 kcal; sugars 1.75 × 5.4 / 100 = 0.0945, so 0.1 g; 169593 228 × 86 / 100 = 196.08, so 196.1 kcal; sugars 1.75 × 86 / 100 = 1.505, so 1.5 g; 169594 220 × 5.4 / 100 = 11.88, so 11.9 kcal; sugars 1.76 × 5.4 / 100 = 0.09504, so 0.1 g; 169594 220 × 86 / 100 = 189.2, so 189.2 kcal; sugars 1.76 × 86 / 100 = 1.5136, so 1.5 g; 174866 411 × 21 / 100 = 86.31, so 86.3 kcal; sugars 66.7 × 21 / 100 = 14.007, so 14.0 g; 173220 428 × 21 / 100 = 89.88, so 89.9 kcal; sugars 47.6 × 21 / 100 = 9.996, so 10.0 g; 174159 400 × 22 / 100 = 88, so 88.0 kcal; sugars 81.8 × 22 / 100 = 17.996, so 18.0 g; 174122 398 × 28 / 100 = 111.44, so 111.4 kcal; sugars 65.6 × 28 / 100 = 18.368, so 18.4 g; 174867 85 × 265 / 100 = 225.25, so 225.3 kcal; sugars 6.68 × 265 / 100 = 17.702, so 17.7 g; 173221 88 × 265 / 100 = 233.2, so 233.2 kcal; sugars 9.56 × 265 / 100 = 25.334, so 25.3 g; 174123 55 × 206 / 100 = 113.3, so 113.3 kcal; sugars 9.03 × 206 / 100 = 18.6018, so 18.6 g; 174123 55 × 34.3 / 100 = 18.865, so 18.9 kcal; sugars 9.03 × 34.3 / 100 = 3.09729, so 3.1 g.

Where NYUS fits (our app)

We make NYUS, so read this as ours. NYUS is an AI fitness and nutrition coach in early access on Android, with no ads and no data selling. You log foods yourself by searching 8,900+ Indian and global foods or by barcode, and a weekly check-in adjusts your calories, macros and step goal once enough is logged. Barcode coverage of Indian packaged foods is not complete, so search by name when a scan finds nothing.

The per portion figures, the sums, the rounding, the comparisons and every sentence starting "Our reading" are NYUS's own arithmetic or opinion, not from USDA. The SR Legacy values and portion weights are exactly as printed on the record pages. The names in the first column are the dataset's own record names.

Frequently asked questions

How many calories are in a tablespoon of cocoa powder?

SR Legacy 169593 (Cocoa, dry powder, unsweetened) prints 228 kcal per 100 g and lists 1 tbsp as 5.4 g, which is 12.3 kcal (228 x 5.4 / 100 = 12.312). SR Legacy 169594 (the same, processed with alkali) prints 220 kcal per 100 g and lists 1 tbsp as 5.4 g, 11.9 kcal. Neither record prints a teaspoon weight, so this guide gives no per-teaspoon figure.

How many calories are in malted drink powder?

SR Legacy 174866 (Beverages, malted drink mix, chocolate, powder) prints 411 kcal per 100 g and lists 1 serving (3 heaping tsp or 1 envelope) as 21 g, 86.3 kcal. SR Legacy 173220 (Beverages, Malted drink mix, natural, powder, dairy based.) prints 428 kcal per 100 g and lists the same serving wording as 21 g, 89.9 kcal. SR Legacy 174123 (Cocoa mix, powder, prepared with water) prints 55 kcal per 100 g and lists 1 serving 6 fl oz as 206 g, 113.3 kcal. The record pages mark these three as recipes per package directions, so the amount of powder and milk is the record's, not yours.

SR Legacy 174159 (chocolate-flavor beverage mix for milk, powder, with added nutrients) prints 400 kcal per 100 g and lists 1 serving as 22 g, 88.0 kcal. SR Legacy 174122 (Beverages, Cocoa mix, powder) prints 398 kcal per 100 g and lists 1 serving (3 heaping tsp or 1 envelope) as 28 g, 111.4 kcal.

Is a tin of cocoa or malted drink the same as these records?

This guide does not decide that. The records are the dataset's own generic entries, IFCT 2017 has no cocoa, chocolate, malted or drink mix row (the PDF text has none), and we do not say which record a tin, a sachet or a home recipe matches; check the pack or weigh it. We use no brand and no pack label.

Can I log cocoa and malted drinks in NYUS?

NYUS is our app. You log foods yourself by searching 8,900+ Indian and global foods or by barcode; log the powder by its weight and the milk or sugar by their own weights, and check the pack if you have one. NYUS is in early access on Android: 30-day free trial, then plans from ₹499 for one month, paid once with no auto-renewal, no card needed to start.
