A small packet of chips with the match, a bowl of popcorn at the cinema, a few pretzels with a drink: packaged snacks are eaten by the packet or the bowl, but calorie lists give them per 100 g. This guide gives the calories per 100 g for five snack records from USDA FoodData Central and one puffed rice row from IFCT 2017, then turns them into a serving using the weights USDA prints on each record, and into a small packet or a bowl using weights that are ours and labelled. The figures are for plain, salted snacks, not a particular brand and not an Indian namkeen.

The short answer

By the USDA records below, 22 potato chips (1 oz, 28 g) are about 149 kcal, a cup of oil-popped popcorn (11 g) about 55 kcal, an ounce of tortilla chips (28.35 g) about 134 kcal and an ounce of hard pretzels about 109 kcal; 10 pretzel twists (60 g) are about 230 kcal. A cup of air-popped popcorn (8 g) is about 31 kcal. By our assumptions, a 30 g pack of potato chips is about 160 kcal, a 50 g pack about 266 kcal and a 3-cup bowl of popcorn about 93 kcal air-popped or 165 kcal oil-popped. Our reading: per 100 g the rows run from 362 to 532 kcal, so a packet or a bowl is mostly decided by how much it weighs.

Calories per 100 g and per serving

Indian lab values (IFCT 2017) cover one snack of this kind: Table 1 has puffed rice (murmura, A012, 6 regions, PDF page 41) at 1514 kJ per 100 g, which is 362 kcal at 4.184 kJ per kcal, and no row for chips, popcorn, pretzels, namkeen or fried snacks that we found. The other five rows are USDA FoodData Central SR Legacy reference values, and the kcal per 100 g is the Energy figure printed on each record. The servings come from two places. The 22 chips, the cup of popcorn, the ounce, the 10 pretzel twists and the bags are the household portions USDA prints on each record page. A small packet is not on the records, so the packet and bowl rows are ours: a 30 g pack and a 50 g pack are round-number assumptions for a small and a medium pack, not any brand's, and a bowl is 3 of USDA's cups, so 3 times 8 g is 24 g and 3 times 11 g is 33 g. Packs and bowls vary, so read the net weight on yours. Each figure is the grams times the kcal per 100 g in the table, divided by 100, rounded to the nearest kcal. The rows are plain, salted US snacks; the puffed rice row is shown for the same 30 g pack so you can compare it with the others.

The 30 g and 50 g pack weights, the 3-cup bowl, the sums, the rounding, the kilojoule to kcal conversion, the ounce comparison and every sentence starting "Our reading" are NYUS's own arithmetic or opinion, not from USDA or IFCT. The 22 chips, cup, ounce, bag and 10 twists weights are USDA's, printed on the record pages above. Frequently asked questions

How many calories are in a small packet of potato chips?

The USDA FoodData Central SR Legacy record 169677 (Snacks, potato chips, plain, salted) prints 532 kcal per 100 g and lists 22 chips (1 oz) as 28 g, about 149 kcal by our arithmetic. USDA gives no pack size for a small packet, so a 30 g pack (our assumption) is about 160 kcal and a 50 g pack (also ours) about 266 kcal. Read the net weight on your pack and scale from the per 100 g figure.

How many calories are in a bowl of popcorn?

USDA SR Legacy 167959 (Snacks, popcorn, air-popped) prints 387 kcal per 100 g and lists 1 cup as 8 g, about 31 kcal; 170247 (Snacks, popcorn, oil-popped, white popcorn, salt added) prints 500 kcal and lists 1 cup as 11 g, about 55 kcal. A bowl is not a USDA portion: by our assumption of 3 cups it is about 93 kcal air-popped or 165 kcal oil-popped. Cinema popcorn with butter or caramel is not these rows.

How many calories are in pretzels?

USDA SR Legacy 167555 (Snacks, pretzels, hard, plain, salted) prints 384 kcal per 100 g and lists 1 oz as 28.35 g, about 109 kcal, and 10 twists as 60 g, about 230 kcal by our arithmetic.

Are tortilla chips lower in calories than potato chips?

Per 100 g, yes in these two records: USDA 167558 (Snacks, tortilla chips, plain, white corn, salted) prints 472 kcal against 532 for the potato chips (169677). At the same 1 oz (28.35 g) that is about 134 kcal against about 151 kcal by our arithmetic. USDA's bag of tortilla chips is 213 g and its bag of potato chips 227 g, so a whole bag is about 1005 and 1208 kcal.

Does IFCT 2017 have potato chips, popcorn or pretzels?

Not in Table 1 that we found. IFCT 2017 Table 1 has puffed rice (murmura, A012, 6 regions, PDF page 41) at 1514 kJ per 100 g, which is 362 kcal at 4.184 kJ per kcal, but no chips, popcorn, pretzel, namkeen or fried snack row, so every other row on this page is a USDA FoodData Central SR Legacy record.
