Calories in Banana Chips, Peanut Brittle and Bar
Banana chips and peanut chikki are handfuls and pieces, and the food tables have little for them. This guide uses two datasets and keeps them apart. The SR Legacy table of USDA FoodData Central has three records we use: banana chips, peanut brittle and peanut bar, each with the portion weights printed on its record page. IFCT 2017, the Indian Food Composition Tables from ICMR-NIN, has no banana chips, chikki or murukku row (we searched all 585 PDF pages), so from IFCT 2017 we give only two ingredient rows, peanut and jaggery, per 100 g. No row here is named chikki, and the peanut brittle and peanut bar records are nearest rows, not chikki.
The short answer
By the SR Legacy records, 1 oz (28.35 g) of banana chips is about 147 kcal (519 kcal per 100 g), 1 oz of peanut brittle about 138 kcal (486 per 100 g), and 1 peanut bar of 40 g about 209 kcal (522 per 100 g). By IFCT 2017 Table 1 (6 regions each), raw groundnut is 520 kcal and cane jaggery 354 kcal per 100 g. Our reading: the three SR Legacy rows sit within 36 kcal of each other per 100 g, but they differ a lot in fat (33.6 g, 19 g and 33.7 g per 100 g), so a handful of banana chips and a piece of chikki cannot be assumed equal without a weight.
SR Legacy: per portion
Each figure is our arithmetic: kcal per 100 g times the grams in the portion, divided by 100, rounded to the nearest kcal with half rounding up. Every portion weight is printed on the SR Legacy record page.
| Food (SR Legacy record name) | Source | Per 100 g: kcal · protein · fat · carbs | Portion printed on the record | kcal per portion | Protein · fat · carbs |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Snacks, banana chips | SR Legacy 168849 | 519 kcal · 2.3 g · 33.6 g · 58.4 g | 1 oz, 28.35 g | 147 kcal | 0.7 g · 9.5 g · 16.6 g |
| Candies, peanut brittle, prepared-from-recipe | SR Legacy 169586 | 486 kcal · 7.57 g · 19 g · 71.2 g | 1 oz, 28.35 g | 138 kcal | 2.1 g · 5.4 g · 20.2 g |
| Candies, peanut bar | SR Legacy 169585 | 522 kcal · 15.5 g · 33.7 g · 47.4 g | 1 bar (1.4 oz), 40 g | 209 kcal | 6.2 g · 13.5 g · 19.0 g |
The sums: banana chips 519 × 28.35 / 100 = 147.1365, so 147 kcal; peanut brittle 486 × 28.35 / 100 = 137.781, so 138 kcal; peanut bar 522 × 40 / 100 = 208.8, so 209 kcal. Protein, fat and carbohydrate are the same arithmetic on the per 100 g figures, rounded to 0.1 g with half rounding up.
Other portions printed on the SR Legacy records
| Food (SR Legacy record name) | Source | Portion printed on the record | kcal per portion |
|---|---|---|---|
| Snacks, banana chips | SR Legacy 168849 | 1.5 oz, 42 g | 218 kcal |
| Snacks, banana chips | SR Legacy 168849 | 3 oz, 85 g | 441 kcal |
| Candies, peanut bar | SR Legacy 169585 | 1 oz, 28.35 g | 148 kcal |
| Candies, peanut bar | SR Legacy 169585 | 1 bar (1.6 oz), 45 g | 235 kcal |
| Candies, peanut bar | SR Legacy 169585 | 1 bar (1.75 fl oz), 50 g | 261 kcal |
The sums: banana chips 42 g: 519 × 42 / 100 = 217.98, so 218 kcal; banana chips 85 g: 519 × 85 / 100 = 441.15, so 441 kcal; peanut bar 28.35 g: 522 × 28.35 / 100 = 147.987, so 148 kcal; peanut bar 45 g: 522 × 45 / 100 = 234.9, so 235 kcal; peanut bar 50 g: 522 × 50 / 100 = 261, so 261 kcal.
A handful and a piece: weights that are ours
The SR Legacy records print no weight for a handful of banana chips or a piece of chikki. NYUS's own food list uses 30 g for one handful of banana chips and 25 g for one piece of peanut chikki. Those two weights are our assumptions, not measurements and not dataset values, and the peanut rows below are nearest records, not chikki. Weigh yours and scale from the per 100 g column.
| Our example weight and row | Source | kcal | Protein · fat · carbs |
|---|---|---|---|
| banana chips, 1 handful, 30 g | SR Legacy 168849 | 156 kcal | 0.7 g · 10.1 g · 17.5 g |
| peanut brittle record, 25 g (nearest row to 1 piece of chikki) | SR Legacy 169586 | 122 kcal | 1.9 g · 4.8 g · 17.8 g |
| peanut bar record, 25 g | SR Legacy 169585 | 131 kcal | 3.9 g · 8.4 g · 11.9 g |
The sums: banana chips 30 g: 519 × 30 / 100 = 155.7, so 156 kcal; peanut brittle 25 g: 486 × 25 / 100 = 121.5, so 122 kcal; peanut bar 25 g: 522 × 25 / 100 = 130.5, so 131 kcal.
IFCT 2017: the two ingredient rows
IFCT 2017, Table 1 (Proximate Principles), per 100 g edible portion, raw. IFCT prints energy in kilojoules; kcal is our conversion at 1 kcal = 4.184 kJ, rounded to the nearest kcal with half rounding up. Both rows are averages of 6 regions. These are ingredient rows only; this guide does not add them into a chikki recipe, because the quantities in a chikki are not in either dataset.
| IFCT 2017 row | Code · page | Regions | Protein | Fat | Energy per 100 g |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ground nut (Arachis hypogaea) | H012 · PDF p. 55 | 6 | 23.65 g | 39.63 g | 520 kcal (2176 kJ) |
| Jaggery, cane (Saccharum officinarum) | I001 · PDF p. 56 | 6 | 1.85 g | 0.16 g | 354 kcal (1480 kJ) |
The conversions: H012 2176 / 4.184 = 520.08, so 520 kcal; I001 1480 / 4.184 = 353.73, so 354 kcal.
What stands out in the numbers
- Per 100 g, SR Legacy: peanut bar 522 kcal, banana chips 519 and peanut brittle 486.
- Fat per 100 g, SR Legacy: 33.7 g (peanut bar), 33.6 g (banana chips) and 19 g (peanut brittle), as printed.
- Carbohydrate per 100 g, SR Legacy: peanut brittle 71.2 g, banana chips 58.4 g and peanut bar 47.4 g.
- Protein per 100 g, SR Legacy: peanut bar 15.5 g, peanut brittle 7.57 g and banana chips 2.3 g.
- IFCT per 100 g: groundnut 520 kcal and 23.65 g of protein; cane jaggery 354 kcal and 1.85 g of protein.
Why these are reference rows, not your packet
- Nearest rows, not chikki. SR Legacy 169586 is named peanut brittle, prepared from a recipe, and SR Legacy 169585 is named peanut bar. Neither is named chikki and neither is described as made with jaggery.
- Banana chips: only the record name. SR Legacy 168849 is named "Snacks, banana chips" and does not say how they were cooked or what banana was used, so we do not claim it matches any particular Indian banana chip.
- The records' own notes. The record pages mark the energy and carbohydrate of the three SR Legacy records "Calculated" (the peanut bar energy in kJ carries no note), the peanut brittle protein and fat "Recipe; Cookbook", and carry no note on the banana chips and peanut bar protein and fat.
- Portion sizes are the record's. A handful or a piece you buy may be bigger or smaller; weigh when you can.
- For a packaged product, the pack wins. This page uses no pack labels.
How to log it so the numbers hold
- Log by weight. A 60 g bag of banana chips (our example weight, not a dataset value) on the SR Legacy record is 519 x 60 / 100 = 311.4, so 311 kcal by our arithmetic.
- Treat the peanut rows as a stand-in. If you log a chikki, say in your own note which row you used, and swap to the pack's label as soon as you have one.
- Compare with other snacks. Our potato chips and popcorn guide gives chips by the packet and our nuts per piece guide gives a peanut.
- Do not mix datasets inside one day. If you log a banana chip from SR Legacy, keep to that record for the same snack.

What this page leaves out
- A calorie, protein or fat target, and any claim about what these foods do to your weight or health: we have not looked up one for any person, so we give none. If you have a medical condition, ask your doctor or dietitian.
- Any named brand, pack label or FSSAI figure: not used, so the page does not mix label numbers with the records above.
- Murukku, chakli, other fried snacks and other chikki types (sesame, dry fruit): no row in IFCT 2017 and none among the SR Legacy records used here, so no number.
- A chikki number built from peanut and jaggery: the quantities are in neither dataset, so none is given.
- Nutrients beyond energy, protein, fat and carbohydrate, including sodium and sugars: not covered here.

Join the NYUS waitlistFrequently asked questions
How many calories are in banana chips?
The SR Legacy record 168849 (Snacks, banana chips) prints 519 kcal per 100 g and lists 1 oz as 28.35 g, which is 147 kcal by our arithmetic (519 x 28.35 / 100 = 147.14). The same record lists 1.5 oz as 42 g and 3 oz as 85 g. IFCT 2017 has no banana chips row, so this guide gives no IFCT number for them.
How many calories are in a piece of peanut chikki?
This guide has no chikki row, because neither IFCT 2017 nor the SR Legacy records used here is named chikki. The nearest SR Legacy record is 169586 (Candies, peanut brittle, prepared-from-recipe), 486 kcal per 100 g and 138 kcal for its 1 oz (28.35 g) portion. It is not described as made with jaggery, so treat it as a nearest row, not as chikki. For a 25 g piece it comes to 122 kcal by our arithmetic; the 25 g is our assumption, not a measured chikki.
What is the difference between the peanut brittle and peanut bar rows?
SR Legacy 169586 (Candies, peanut brittle, prepared-from-recipe) prints 486 kcal, 7.57 g of protein and 19 g of fat per 100 g. SR Legacy 169585 (Candies, peanut bar) prints 522 kcal, 15.5 g of protein and 33.7 g of fat per 100 g and lists 1 bar (1.4 oz) as 40 g, about 209 kcal. They are two different records, and neither is named chikki.
How many calories are in peanuts and jaggery on their own?
IFCT 2017 Table 1 prints Ground nut (Arachis hypogaea, H012, 6 regions) at 2176 kJ per 100 g, which is 520 kcal by our conversion at 4.184 kJ per kcal, and Jaggery, cane (I001, 6 regions) at 1480 kJ, 354 kcal. These are two ingredient rows; this guide does not add them into a chikki recipe.
Is there a number for murukku or other fried snacks here?
No. IFCT 2017 has no banana chips, chikki or murukku row (we searched all 585 PDF pages), and this guide uses no SR Legacy record for murukku, so it gives no number for it.
