Calories in Green Peas, Beans and Drumstick
Matar in the pulao and the paneer, French beans in the sabzi, gawar phali on a plain lunch plate, sahjan in the sambar: pods and beans fill the Indian kitchen, yet most calorie lists skip them or lump them with "green vegetables". They are not all the same. This guide gives the calories, protein, fat, fibre and carbohydrate per 100 g for six rows from the ICMR-NIN Indian Food Composition Tables 2017 (IFCT 2017), then turns them into 50 g, 100 g and 150 g servings using weights that are ours.
The short answer
By IFCT 2017, the six rows run from 22 kcal per 100 g (French beans, hybrid, D050) to 81 kcal per 100 g (fresh peas, D061). By our arithmetic, 100 g of raw edible portion is 22 to 81 kcal, and 150 g is 33 to 122 kcal. Our reading: fresh peas carry about two to four times the calories of the beans per gram, so a katori of matar and a katori of French beans are not the same thing on a log.
Calories, protein, fat, fibre and carbohydrate per 100 g
Each row is one IFCT 2017 Table 1 row, per 100 g edible portion as listed in the book, mean values as printed. Energy is the book's kilojoules divided by 4.184, to the nearest kcal. Fibre is total dietary fibre and carbohydrate is the book's available carbohydrate. The rows were measured in 6 regions for peas, cluster beans and drumstick, 5 for country French beans, 3 for broad beans and only 2 for hybrid French beans, so treat the hybrid and broad bean rows as thinner evidence. The values are for the raw vegetable, not for a cooked dish.
| Food (IFCT 2017 row) | Calories per 100 g | Protein per 100 g | Fat per 100 g | Fibre per 100 g | Carbohydrate per 100 g | Water per 100 g | Energy as printed |

| Peas, fresh (matar) (D061) | 81 kcal | 7.25 g | 0.13 g | 6.32 g | 11.88 g | 73.37 g | 340 kJ |
| Cluster beans (gawar phali) (D039) | 40 kcal | 3.55 g | 0.37 g | 4.83 g | 4.91 g | 84.65 g | 168 kJ |

Per 50 g, 100 g and 150 g
The weights are ours, not from IFCT: we take 50 g of shelled peas as about half a small katori, 100 g as about a small katori of shelled peas, and 100 g and 150 g of beans or pods as the raw, trimmed weight before cooking. A katori and a pod vary in size, so weigh your own. Each figure is the per-100 g value times the grams, divided by 100, rounded to the nearest kcal and 0.1 g of protein.
| Food (IFCT 2017 row) | 50 g (ours) | 100 g (ours) | 150 g (ours) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Peas, fresh (matar) (D061) | 41 kcal, 3.6 g protein | 81 kcal, 7.3 g protein | 122 kcal, 10.9 g protein |
| Cluster beans (gawar phali) (D039) | - | 40 kcal, 3.6 g protein | 60 kcal, 5.3 g protein |
| Broad beans (D032) | - | 29 kcal, 3.9 g protein | 44 kcal, 5.8 g protein |
| Drumstick, pods (sahjan ki phali) (D046) | - | 29 kcal, 2.6 g protein | 44 kcal, 3.9 g protein |
| French beans, country (D049) | - | 24 kcal, 2.5 g protein | 37 kcal, 3.7 g protein |
| French beans, hybrid (D050) | - | 22 kcal, 2.1 g protein | 33 kcal, 3.2 g protein |
What stands out in the numbers
- Fresh peas are the densest here at 81 kcal, 7.25 g of protein and 11.88 g of carbohydrate per 100 g. Table 1 lists their water at 73.37 g per 100 g against 84.20 to 90.11 g for the other five, which is most of the gap.
- The beans are light: 22 to 40 kcal per 100 g for French beans and cluster beans, and 29 kcal for broad beans and drumstick.
- Broad beans have the most fibre at 8.63 g per 100 g, then drumstick at 6.83 g and peas at 6.32 g; French beans have the least at 4.18 to 4.38 g. Broad beans have only 3 regions behind them.
- Protein per 100 g is 7.25 g for peas and 2.12 to 3.85 g for the rest. For a protein-first ranking of vegetables see our vegetables with the most protein guide.
How to log it so the numbers hold
- Weigh raw, trimmed and shelled. The rows are per 100 g edible portion, so remove the strings, tips and pea pods before weighing; for drumstick, weigh the pod as the row does and expect the fibrous skin to be left on the plate.
- Cooking oil is not in these rows. A sabzi or a matar pulao adds oil, ghee or paneer on top; see our cooking oil fatty acids guide. If you cannot weigh, the plate method in our hand-portion guide helps.
- Frozen, canned and dried peas are not these rows. Read the pack label for frozen or canned peas, and note that dry peas (B017) are a different row from fresh ones.
- Compare with other vegetables. Our common vegetables guide and our parwal, tinda and kathal guide use the same sums.
Where NYUS fits (our app)
We make NYUS, so read this as ours. NYUS is an AI fitness and nutrition coach in early access on Android, with no ads and no data selling. You log foods yourself by searching 8,900+ Indian and global foods or by barcode, and a weekly check-in adjusts your calories, macros and step goal once enough is logged. Barcode coverage of Indian packaged foods is not complete, so search by name when a scan finds nothing.
What this page leaves out
- A calorie or protein target: we have not looked up one for any person, so we give none.
- Other tender beans and pods in IFCT 2017, such as scarlet beans (D003) and field beans (D047, D048), and any cooked dish, frozen or canned pack, or dried pea: this page covers the six rows above only.
- Anything about weight, health or what peas, beans or drumstick do to your body: the page adds up food data and makes no claim about it. If you have a medical condition, ask your doctor or dietitian.

How many calories are in 100 g of green peas (matar)?
IFCT 2017 row D061 (peas, fresh) gives 340 kJ per 100 g, which is 81 kcal at 4.184 kJ per kcal, with 7.25 g of protein, 0.13 g of fat and 6.32 g of fibre. A 100 g serving is our assumption, about a small katori of shelled peas: weigh yours.
How many calories are in French beans?
IFCT 2017 gives country French beans (D049) 24 kcal per 100 g (102 kJ) and hybrid French beans (D050) 22 kcal (93 kJ), so by our arithmetic 150 g raw is 37 and 33 kcal. The hybrid row was measured in only 2 regions.
How many calories are in cluster beans (gawar phali) and drumstick?
IFCT 2017 gives cluster beans (D039) 40 kcal per 100 g (168 kJ) and drumstick pods (D046) 29 kcal (123 kJ). By our weights, 150 g raw is 60 and 44 kcal. These are raw values, before any oil or masala.
Why do peas have so many more calories than beans?
Per 100 g, IFCT 2017 lists peas (D061) at 81 kcal against 22 to 40 kcal for the beans and drumstick. Table 1 shows less water in peas (73.37 g per 100 g against 84.20 to 90.11 g) and more protein and carbohydrate (7.25 g and 11.88 g).
