"Green chilli calories per 100 g" and "hari mirch calories" are searched in India. The Indian Food Composition Tables (IFCT 2017, ICMR-NIN) list seven green chilli rows, numbered Chillies, green-1 to green-7, with no variety printed. This guide gives five of them (green-2 to green-6), raw and per 100 g, with the Hindi and other Indian names IFCT prints (Hara Mirchi in Hindi, Lila marcha in Gujarati, Pachhai milagai in Tamil, Pacchi Mirapakaya in Telugu), the range, the protein, fat, fibre and carbohydrate they print, and a 100 g, 250 g and 500 g table. Green-1 and green-7 are named on our other pages and are not repeated. IFCT prints no weight per chilli, so there is no "one hari mirch" figure. USDA green chilli, jalapeno and capsicum are in our capsicum and green chilli guide, onion, garlic and ginger in our onion, garlic, ginger, jeera and haldi guide and tomato, onion, garlic and ginger guide, and other vegetables in our common Indian vegetables guide.

The short answer

By IFCT 2017, raw green chilli is 167 to 190 kJ per 100 g across the five rows, which is 40 to 45 kcal: the lowest is G002 (Chillies, green-2) at 40 kcal and the highest G004 (Chillies, green-4) at 45 kcal; G003 is 40, G006 42 and G005 43 kcal. Our unweighted mean of the five row energies is 176.2 kJ, 42.1 kcal (our arithmetic, not an IFCT figure). IFCT prints energy in kJ only, so the kcal are our conversion (kJ divided by 4.184, rounded to a whole kcal). Our reading: the five rows are within 5 kcal of each other per 100 g, and the row with the highest carbohydrate (G005, 6.64 g) is not the row with the highest energy; what changes a chilli dish is the oil, salt and masala, which no IFCT row includes.

IFCT 2017: per 100 g, raw

Figures are as the IFCT 2017 PDF prints them (Table 1, PDF page 53), per 100 g of edible portion: moisture, protein and total fat in g, total dietary fibre and available carbohydrate in g, and energy in kJ. Where a row averages several regions IFCT prints a mean with a spread; the table shows the mean. The kcal is our conversion. IFCT 2017 says all its data except poultry and egg is for raw food (PDF p. 27), so these are raw weights. IFCT prints no portion weights, so there is no printed-portion table on this page. The local names IFCT prints in its appendix (PDF pages 519 and 520) for these rows are: Hindi Hara Mirchi; Gujarati Lila marcha (green-2, green-3 and green-6) or Vadhvani marcha (green-5); Kannada Hasi Menasinakayi; Malayalam Mulaku; Tamil Pachhai milagai; Telugu Pacchi Mirapakaya; and Sanskrit Marichika, Odia Kancha Lanka and Nepali Hariyo khursani.

100 g, 250 g and 500 g of raw green chilli

Chillies are sold by 250 g and 500 g, which IFCT does not print. These three weights are ours: each cell is the IFCT kJ figure times the grams, divided by 100 and by 4.184, as kcal, with protein and fat as the IFCT per 100 g figure times the grams divided by 100, shown to 0.1 with half rounding up. They are raw edible portion; the stalk and any seeds you remove are not in these figures, and IFCT prints no yield for them. None is a fried, pickled or tadka chilli.

What this page leaves out

Sources

The kcal conversion (kJ / 4.184, whole kcal), the unweighted mean, the 100 g, 250 g and 500 g table, the sums, the rounding, the comparisons and every sentence starting "Our reading" are NYUS's own arithmetic or opinion, not from IFCT. The moisture, protein, fat, fibre, carbohydrate and kJ values and the local names are exactly as printed in the IFCT 2017 PDF (means for multi-region rows). The names in the first column are IFCT's own row names.

Frequently asked questions

How many calories are in green chilli (hari mirch) per 100 g?

IFCT 2017 lists seven green chilli rows (Chillies, green-1 to green-7); the five on this page, G002 to G006, run from 167 kJ (40 kcal) to 190 kJ (45 kcal) per 100 g raw. Our unweighted mean of the five row energies is 176.2 kJ, which is 42.1 kcal; that mean is our arithmetic, not an IFCT figure, and it leaves out G001 and G007.

How many calories are in one green chilli?

IFCT prints no weight for one green chilli, so we cannot give a per-chilli or "1 hari mirch" figure. The only weight-based answers IFCT supports are per 100 g and the 250 g and 500 g arithmetic on this page. If you weigh your own chillies, multiply the per 100 g kcal of the row you choose by your grams and divide by 100; that is your arithmetic on a weight you measured, not an IFCT figure.

Why does IFCT give five different green chilli numbers?

IFCT prints no variety, colour or length for its green chilli rows, only the numbers 1 to 7, and each row averages 1 to 5 regions (G002 3; G003 5; G004 3; G005 2; G006 1 for the five on this page). We do not say which row is a long, small, thin or thick chilli.

Are these raw or cooked green chilli calories?

No. IFCT 2017 says all its data except poultry and egg is for raw food (PDF p. 27), so every row on this page is raw green chilli, per 100 g of edible portion. IFCT has no fried, pickled, stuffed or tadka row; oil, salt and masala are separate and change the number.

How much carbohydrate, fibre and protein is in 100 g of green chilli?

Per 100 g, the five rows have 5.23 to 6.64 g of available carbohydrate, 3.95 to 5.15 g of total dietary fibre, 2.01 to 3.01 g of protein and 0.64 to 0.75 g of fat. The row with the highest carbohydrate (G005, 6.64 g) is not the row with the highest energy (G004, 190 kJ).

How many calories are in 250 g or 500 g of green chilli?

For 250 g and 500 g, see the weights table on this page (our arithmetic on the IFCT kJ figure, all 5 rows); for example G002 is 99.8 kcal for 250 g and 199.6 kcal for 500 g, and G004 113.5 kcal and 227.1 kcal. These are raw edible portion; stalks and any seeds you remove are not in these figures and IFCT prints no yield for them.

Are there other IFCT green chilli rows?

IFCT 2017 has two more green chilli rows, G001 (Chillies, green-1) and G007 (Chillies, green-7). Both are named on our other pages and are not repeated here, so this page gives the other five; the USDA green chilli records are on our capsicum and green chilli guide.

Can I log green chilli in NYUS?
