The figures on this page are built from IFCT 2017 Table 1 rows and, where Table 1 has no row, USDA FoodData Central SR Legacy records. No primary table has a thepla record: IFCT 2017, the Indian Food Composition Tables from ICMR-NIN, prints raw foods (its few cooked rows are boiled and omelette eggs and roasted vermicelli) and no thepla, no roti, paratha or other cooked flatbread and no cooking oil row, and USDA FoodData Central SR Legacy has no thepla record. So this page does not quote a number. It works a plate of thepla out line by line: the raw atta, fenugreek leaves, green chilli, ginger, turmeric powder and, in the second version, white sesame seeds from named IFCT 2017 rows and the tawa oil from a USDA record, with weights per thepla that are our assumptions and the oil shown as a range so you can see what it adds, once as a plain thepla and once as a thepla with sesame and more oil. They are estimates, shown so you can change the weights to match your dough. For plain and aloo parathas from the same atta row see our paratha vs roti guide, for shop-bought flatbreads our packaged bread guide, for a stuffed paratha worked out the same way our paneer paratha guide, and for the spoon values our ghee, oil and sugar guide.

The short answer

By our working, 3 plain thepla (40 g raw atta, 10 g fenugreek leaves, 1 g green chilli, 1 g ginger and 0.3 g turmeric powder per thepla, with 3 g of oil on the tawa per thepla) are about 479.6 kcal and 14.1 g protein, about 159.9 kcal each, and 3 thepla with sesame (the same, plus 3 g of white sesame seeds and 6 g of tawa oil per thepla) are about 605.9 kcal and 16.1 g protein, about 202.0 kcal each. For 2 to 4 thepla and 2 to 4 g of tawa oil each the plain version runs 302.1 to 674.9 kcal, and with sesame and 4 to 8 g of oil each it runs 368.6 to 878.8 kcal, with the fenugreek leaves and spices in every cell. These are estimates from the weights below, not measured values, not from a thepla record and not a shop or restaurant figure. Our reading: the parts of the plain main case rank the atta 384.3 kcal, the tawa oil 79.6 kcal, the fenugreek leaves 10.3 kcal, the green chilli, ginger and turmeric 5.4 kcal; the parts of the sesame main case rank the atta 384.3 kcal, the tawa oil 159.1 kcal, the sesame seeds 46.8 kcal, the fenugreek leaves 10.3 kcal, the green chilli, ginger and turmeric 5.4 kcal; and the sesame version is 126.3 kcal above the plain one.

IFCT 2017 rows used, per 100 g

IFCT 2017 Table 1 prints, per 100 g edible portion, water, protein, ash, total fat, total dietary fibre, insoluble and soluble fibre, carbohydrate and energy in kJ. We read these 6 rows from the PDF text on 30 October 2026, as the mean of the regions shown (PDF pages in the Sources); the kcal is ours (kJ divided by 4.184, to 0.1). IFCT prints no portion weights; every row here is raw, so we count raw weight and no table prints a cooked weight for this dish. A019 is the same atta row as on our paratha vs roti guide.

The oil: USDA SR Legacy, per 100 g

IFCT 2017 Table 1 has no cooking oil row, so the oil comes from USDA FoodData Central SR Legacy; it is a US record (peanut oil). Energy is USDA's kcal with the kJ beside it; water, protein, total fat and carbohydrate (by difference) are in g, then fibre (g), total sugars (g) and sodium (mg), all per 100 g.

The data-type label on each USDA field, as the record shows it

USDA's record page shows a data-type label beside some fields and none beside others. This table copies what the record shows, read field by field from the nutrient table of the record page; "no label shown" means the record prints no label there, and "not printed" means the record has no row for that field. We do not interpret the labels beyond printing them. IFCT 2017 prints no such labels.

The household portions USDA prints for the oil

These are the entries in the record's Measures list, as printed; the other entry is 100 g. This page counts the oil in grams and takes 1 teaspoon as 4.5 g, the record's own teaspoon. The kcal in the last column is ours: the printed kcal per 100 g times the grams, divided by 100, shown to 0.1.

Food (USDA record name)SourcePortion as USDA prints itEnergy for the portion (our arithmetic)
Oil, peanut, salad or cookingSR Legacy 1714101 tsp (4.5 g)39.8 kcal
Oil, peanut, salad or cookingSR Legacy 1714101 cup (216 g)1909.4 kcal
Oil, peanut, salad or cookingSR Legacy 1714101 tbsp (13.5 g)119.3 kcal

The portion sums: 171410 1 tsp (4.5 g): 884 × 4.5 / 100 = 39.78, so 39.8 kcal; 171410 1 cup (216 g): 884 × 216 / 100 = 1909.44, so 1909.4 kcal; 171410 1 tbsp (13.5 g): 884 × 13.5 / 100 = 119.34, so 119.3 kcal. By the same arithmetic 5 g of oil is 44.2 kcal and 10 g 88.4 kcal.

Worked example 1: plain thepla

Every weight here is our assumption for 3 thepla, counted raw: a dough of atta with chopped fenugreek leaves, green chilli, ginger and turmeric powder, rolled out and roasted on a tawa with oil. Each IFCT line is the kJ divided by 4.184, times the grams, divided by 100, to 0.1 kcal; each USDA line is the printed kcal per 100 g times the grams, divided by 100; protein is the table's protein per 100 g times the grams, divided by 100. Salt, water and other spices are not counted.

The per-thepla weights, the kJ to kcal conversions, the line values, the sums, the grids, the per-piece division, the tawa oil, the portion kcal, the rounding, the comparisons and every sentence starting "Our reading" are NYUS's own assumptions, arithmetic or opinion, not from USDA or IFCT. The IFCT values are the means printed in IFCT 2017 Table 1; the USDA values, data-type labels and Measures-list portions are exactly as shown on the USDA record page. Frequently asked questions

How many calories are in thepla?

No table prints one. IFCT 2017, the Indian Food Composition Tables from ICMR-NIN, prints raw foods (its few cooked rows are boiled and omelette eggs and roasted vermicelli) and no thepla, no roti, paratha or other cooked flatbread and no cooking oil row, and USDA FoodData Central SR Legacy has no thepla record. Worked from IFCT rows and USDA peanut oil with weights that are our assumptions, 3 plain thepla (40 g raw atta, 10 g fenugreek leaves, 1 g green chilli, 1 g ginger and 0.3 g turmeric powder per thepla, with 3 g of oil on the tawa per thepla) come to 479.6 kcal and 14.1 g protein; 3 thepla with sesame (the same, plus 3 g of white sesame seeds and 6 g of tawa oil per thepla) come to 605.9 kcal and 16.1 g protein. For 2 to 4 thepla and 2 to 4 g of oil each the plain version runs 302.1 to 674.9 kcal, and with sesame and 4 to 8 g of oil each it runs 368.6 to 878.8 kcal. These are estimates, not measured values.

How many calories are in one thepla?

On the same working one plain thepla is about 159.9 kcal and one thepla with sesame about 202.0 kcal (the 3-piece main case divided by 3). A thepla is not a standard piece: the page assumes 40 g of raw atta in each, and a thepla made from more or less dough is more or less. No table prints a thepla weight.

How much protein is in thepla?

Estimated from table protein per 100 g with our weights: 14.1 g in 3 plain thepla and 16.1 g in 3 thepla with sesame, of which the 120 g of atta supplies 12.7 g (IFCT A019: 10.57 g per 100 g) and the 30 g of fenugreek leaves 1.1 g (C020: 3.68 g per 100 g). For 2 to 4 thepla it runs 9.2 to 18.7 g (plain) and 10.5 to 21.3 g (with sesame). The oil adds none.

Why is the version with sesame higher than the plain one?

In this working two things differ: the sesame seeds (9 g for 3 thepla, 46.8 kcal; IFCT H011) and the tawa oil (18 g against 9 g, 79.5 kcal more; USDA SR Legacy 171410: 884 kcal per 100 g). The atta, fenugreek leaves and spices are the same, so the version with sesame is 126.3 kcal higher: 46.8 kcal from the sesame and 79.5 kcal from the oil. These are our assumed weights, not a measured plate.

How much does the tawa oil add to thepla?

By USDA SR Legacy 171410 each 5 g of peanut oil is 44.2 kcal and each teaspoon (4.5 g) 39.8 kcal. We have no measured figure for how much oil a thepla takes, so the page shows it as a range per thepla: in the plain version the number of thepla (2 to 4) moves it more than the oil per thepla (2 to 4 g): 319.9 kcal against 53.1 kcal; in the version with sesame the number of thepla (2 to 4) moves it more than the oil per thepla (4 to 8 g): 404.1 kcal against 106.1 kcal.

Does this include curd, besan, pickle, salt or other spices?

No. Only the listed ingredients are counted: raw atta, fenugreek leaves, green chilli, ginger, turmeric powder, sesame seeds (in the second version) and oil. Salt, besan, curd, other spice powders, ghee, the water in the dough and curd, pickle or tea served with it are not counted. The page gives no shop, restaurant or packaged thepla figure.

Is thepla in the USDA bread records?

No. A search of USDA FoodData Central SR Legacy on 30 October 2026 (control first, 'roll dinner', 11 results) found 0 results for thepla and methi, and the nearest records are not thepla: flatbread 1 result (Focaccia, Italian flatbread, plain), paratha 1 (Bread, paratha, whole wheat, commercially prepared, frozen) and roti or chapati 2 (Bread, chapati or roti, plain, commercially prepared; Bread, chapati or roti, whole wheat, commercially prepared, frozen). None is a thepla, so none is used here.

What does the label on the USDA oil record mean?

USDA's record page shows a data-type label beside some fields and none beside others. The peanut oil record labels kcal "Calculated" and total sugars "Assumed zero (Insignificant amount or not naturally occurring in a food, such as fiber in meat)"; the other fields show no label; the rest are printed exactly in the label table on this page. The gram and teaspoon kcal are our arithmetic (printed kcal per 100 g times the grams, divided by 100). IFCT 2017 prints no data-type labels.
