Try NYUS free on AndroidThe figures on this page are built from IFCT 2017 Table 1 rows and, where Table 1 has no row, USDA FoodData Central SR Legacy records. No primary table has a tamarind rice record: IFCT 2017, the Indian Food Composition Tables from ICMR-NIN, prints raw foods (its few cooked rows are boiled and omelette eggs and roasted vermicelli) and no tamarind rice, no cooked rice dish and no cooking oil row, and USDA FoodData Central SR Legacy has no tamarind rice record. So this page does not quote a number. It works one plate out line by line: the raw rice, tamarind pulp, groundnuts, mustard seeds, curry leaves, dry red chilli and fenugreek seeds from named rows and the oil from a USDA record, with weights that are our assumptions and the oil shown apart so you can see what it adds, once with 12 g of oil and once with 25 g. They are estimates, shown so you can change the weights to match your pan. For another tempered rice worked out the same way see our lemon rice guide, for tomato rice our tomato rice guide, for rice with sambar our sambar rice guide, and for the spoon values our ghee, oil and sugar guide.
The short answer
By our working, one plate of tamarind rice with a little oil (90 g raw rice, 15 g tamarind pulp, 15 g groundnuts, 1 g mustard seeds, 1 g curry leaves, 2 g dry red chilli and 1 g fenugreek seeds and 12 g of peanut oil (about 2.7 teaspoons)) is about 560.8 kcal and 11.9 g protein, and one plate with more oil (90 g raw rice, 15 g tamarind pulp, 15 g groundnuts, 1 g mustard seeds, 1 g curry leaves, 2 g dry red chilli and 1 g fenugreek seeds and 25 g of peanut oil (about 1.9 tablespoons)) is about 675.7 kcal and 11.9 g protein. Scaling the raw rice from 70 to 110 g (every other ingredient scaled with it) and the oil from 8 to 16 g the less oil plate runs 425.1 to 696.8 kcal, and with 20 to 30 g of oil the more oil plate runs 531.2 to 820.6 kcal. These are estimates from the weights below, not measured values, not from a tamarind rice record and not a shop or restaurant figure. Our reading: the parts of the less oil main case rank the rice 320.7 kcal, the oil 106.1 kcal, the groundnuts 78.0 kcal, the tamarind pulp 43.3 kcal, the tempering spices and curry leaves 12.7 kcal; the parts of the more oil main case rank the rice 320.7 kcal, the oil 221.0 kcal, the groundnuts 78.0 kcal, the tamarind pulp 43.3 kcal, the tempering spices and curry leaves 12.7 kcal; and the more oil plate is 114.9 kcal above the other because only the oil differs.
Table rows used, per 100 g
IFCT 2017 Table 1 prints, per 100 g edible portion, water, protein, ash, total fat, total dietary fibre, insoluble and soluble fibre, carbohydrate and energy in kJ. We read these 7 rows from the PDF text on 3 November 2026, as the mean of the regions shown (PDF pages in the Sources); the kcal is ours (kJ divided by 4.184, to 0.1). IFCT prints no portion weights; every row here is raw, so we count raw weight, and the weight rice gains in cooking and the water in the tamarind paste are not printed in any table; the rice is counted raw, and the tamarind pulp row is the plain pulp, not a prepared paste.

The oil: USDA SR Legacy, per 100 g
IFCT 2017 Table 1 has no cooking oil row, so the oil comes from USDA FoodData Central SR Legacy; it is a US record (peanut oil). Energy is USDA's kcal with the kJ beside it; water, protein, total fat and carbohydrate (by difference) are in g, then fibre (g), total sugars (g) and sodium (mg), all per 100 g.
| Food (USDA record name) | Source | Energy | Water · protein · fat · carbohydrate (g) | Fibre (g) · total sugars (g) · sodium (mg) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Oil, peanut, salad or cooking | SR Legacy 171410 | 884 kcal (3700 kJ) | 0 · 0 · 100 · 0 | 0 · 0 · 0 |
The data-type label on each USDA field, as the record shows it
USDA's record page shows a data-type label beside some fields and none beside others. This table copies what the record shows, read field by field from the nutrient table of the record page; "no label shown" means the record prints no label there, and "not printed" means the record has no row for that field. We do not interpret the labels beyond printing them. IFCT 2017 prints no such labels.
| Food (USDA record name) | Source | kcal | kJ | Carbohydrate by difference | Fibre | Total sugars | Water, protein, fat, sodium |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Oil, peanut, salad or cooking | SR Legacy 171410 | Calculated | no label shown | no label shown | no label shown | Assumed zero (Insignificant amount or not naturally occurring in a food, such as fiber in meat) | no label shown |
The household portions USDA prints for the USDA records
These are the entries in the records' Measures lists, as printed; the other entry is 100 g. This page counts the oil in grams and takes 1 teaspoon as 4.5 g and 1 tablespoon as 13.5 g, the oil record's own measures. The kcal in the last column is ours: the printed kcal per 100 g times the grams, divided by 100, shown to 0.1.
| Food (USDA record name) | Source | Portion as USDA prints it | Energy for the portion (our arithmetic) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Oil, peanut, salad or cooking | SR Legacy 171410 | 1 tsp (4.5 g) | 39.8 kcal |
| Oil, peanut, salad or cooking | SR Legacy 171410 | 1 cup (216 g) | 1909.4 kcal |
| Oil, peanut, salad or cooking | SR Legacy 171410 | 1 tbsp (13.5 g) | 119.3 kcal |
The portion sums: 171410 1 tsp (4.5 g): 884 × 4.5 / 100 = 39.78, so 39.8 kcal; 171410 1 cup (216 g): 884 × 216 / 100 = 1909.44, so 1909.4 kcal; 171410 1 tbsp (13.5 g): 884 × 13.5 / 100 = 119.34, so 119.3 kcal. By the same arithmetic 5 g of oil is 44.2 kcal and 10 g 88.4 kcal.
Worked example 1: tamarind rice with a little oil
Every weight here is our assumption for one plate, counted raw: cooked rice mixed with a tamarind paste tempered in oil with groundnuts, mustard seeds, curry leaves, dry red chilli and fenugreek seeds, counted as one plate from the raw weights (our assumptions: 90 g of raw rice and 15 g of tamarind pulp); the oil is what goes into the tempering, an amount we assume. Each IFCT line is the kJ divided by 4.184, times the grams, divided by 100, to 0.1 kcal; each USDA line is the printed kcal per 100 g times the grams, divided by 100; protein is the table's protein per 100 g times the grams, divided by 100. Salt and spice powders are not counted.
| Ingredient (our weight) | Row | Grams | kcal per 100 g | kcal | Protein (g) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rice, raw, milled | IFCT A015 | 90 g | 356.4 | 320.7 | 7.1 |

| Tamarind rice with less oil, main case (one plate) | 560.8 | 11.9 |
The grid varies the raw raw rice per plate (70, 90, 110 g, with every other ingredient scaled by the same factor and rounded to 0.1 g) and the oil (8, 12, 16 g); the weights in the table above are the 90 g main case.
| raw rice per plate (all other ingredients scaled with it) | 8 g oil | 12 g oil | 16 g oil | Protein (g) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 70 g raw rice | 425.1 | 460.5 | 495.8 | 9.4 |
| 90 g raw rice (main case) | 525.4 | 560.8 | 596.1 | 11.9 |
| 110 g raw rice | 626.1 | 661.5 | 696.8 | 14.4 |
Worked example 2: tamarind rice with more oil
Same method and the same 90 g raw rice, 15 g tamarind pulp, 15 g groundnuts, 1 g mustard seeds, 1 g curry leaves, 2 g dry red chilli and 1 g fenugreek seeds; the 12 g of oil becomes 25 g. This is our assumed recipe, not a measured plate.
| Ingredient (our weight) | Row | Grams | kcal per 100 g | kcal | Protein (g) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rice, raw, milled | IFCT A015 | 90 g | 356.4 | 320.7 | 7.1 |

| Fenugreek seeds | IFCT G026 | 1 g | 234.9 | 2.3 | 0.3 |
| Oil, peanut, salad or cooking (main case, about 1.9 tbsp) | SR Legacy 171410 | 25 g | 884.0 | 221.0 | 0.0 |
| Tamarind rice with more oil, main case (one plate) | 675.7 | 11.9 |
The grid varies the raw raw rice per plate (70, 90, 110 g, with every other ingredient scaled by the same factor and rounded to 0.1 g) and the oil (20, 25, 30 g); the weights in the table above are the 90 g main case.
| raw rice per plate (all other ingredients scaled with it) | 20 g oil | 25 g oil | 30 g oil | Protein (g) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 70 g raw rice | 531.2 | 575.4 | 619.6 | 9.4 |
| 90 g raw rice (main case) | 631.5 | 675.7 | 719.9 | 11.9 |
| 110 g raw rice | 732.2 | 776.4 | 820.6 | 14.4 |
The two main cases side by side
These are the single examples used in the short answer; each follows from the tables above and from the weights in the cell.
| Main case (our weights) | kcal | Protein (g) |
|---|---|---|
| Less oil, one plate: 90 g raw rice, 15 g tamarind pulp, 15 g groundnuts, 1 g mustard seeds, 1 g curry leaves, 2 g dry red chilli and 1 g fenugreek seeds and 12 g of peanut oil (about 2.7 teaspoons) | 560.8 | 11.9 |
| More oil, one plate: 90 g raw rice, 15 g tamarind pulp, 15 g groundnuts, 1 g mustard seeds, 1 g curry leaves, 2 g dry red chilli and 1 g fenugreek seeds and 25 g of peanut oil (about 1.9 tablespoons) | 675.7 | 11.9 |
What stands out in the numbers
- Less oil, part by part: the rice 320.7 kcal, the oil 106.1 kcal, the groundnuts 78.0 kcal, the tamarind pulp 43.3 kcal, the tempering spices and curry leaves 12.7 kcal. Raw rice is 356.4 kcal per 100 g (IFCT A015), groundnuts 520.1 kcal per 100 g (IFCT H012), tamarind pulp 288.5 kcal per 100 g (IFCT E064) and the oil 884 kcal per 100 g (USDA 171410).
- More oil, part by part: the rice 320.7 kcal, the oil 221.0 kcal, the groundnuts 78.0 kcal, the tamarind pulp 43.3 kcal, the tempering spices and curry leaves 12.7 kcal; against the less oil plate the oil is 114.9 kcal higher, and that is the whole difference between the plates.
- Size against oil: on the less oil plate the raw rice weight (70 to 110 g) moves it more than the oil (8 to 16 g): 201.0 kcal against 70.7 kcal; on the more oil plate the raw rice weight (70 to 110 g) moves it more than the oil (20 to 30 g): 201.0 kcal against 88.4 kcal. Each 5 g of oil is 44.2 kcal.
- Protein: about 11.9 g in either plate (the oil adds none).
- These are estimates: no tamarind rice record exists, the weights are ours, and a different weight of any ingredient in the tables above will change them.
Why these are estimates, not your tamarind rice
- No record exists for the dish. IFCT 2017 prints raw foods and no cooked dish, and the USDA SR Legacy searches found no tamarind rice record (0 results for tamarind rice, 0 results for puliyodarai). There is no SR Legacy record for tamarind rice or for puliyodarai at all (0 results for each).
- The weights are assumptions. No table prints how much of each ingredient or of the oil a plate takes; ours are stated so you can replace them.
- Raw weights. No table prints the weight of the tamarind rice after cooking, so the page counts raw weight and cannot give a per 100 g or per plate figure.
- Only the oil in the pan is counted. Oil used any other way, or left in the pan, is not counted unless it is in the oil weight.
- US data. The oil row is a US record; IFCT Table 1 has no oil row.
- Labels are printed, not judged. Calculated and Assumed zero are USDA's words on the record; we print them and draw no conclusion from them.
How to log it so the numbers hold
- Log it by parts. Weigh the raw ingredients once for your usual pan, and log the oil by its own weight (weight × figure ÷ 100); our ghee, oil and sugar guide has the spoon values.
- Say how much oil. It is an input this page cannot know; 5 g of oil is 44.2 kcal.
- Say how the pan was divided. The page gives one plate from raw weights; divide the pan's total by the portions you actually made.
- Say what else went in. Anything not in the listed ingredients is not counted.

What this page leaves out
- A measured calorie figure for tamarind rice as a dish: no primary record prints one, so every figure here is an estimate from stated weights.
- A calorie target, and any claim about what the ingredients or the oil do to your body: we have not looked up any for any person, so we give none. If you have a medical condition or are pregnant, ask your doctor or dietitian.
- Other versions and add-ins, such as jaggery, sesame, dal in the tempering, a store-bought paste and a temple or restaurant plate: not counted here; log them from their own rows (lemon rice is in our lemon rice guide, tomato rice in our tomato rice guide).
- Other fats: ghee, butter and other oils were not looked up for this page.
- Shop, restaurant and packaged tamarind rice: no table prints a weight or oil use, so we give no such figure; read the pack for packaged ones.
- Per 100 g and per plate figures: no table prints a cooked weight, so none is given here.
- Nutrients beyond energy, water, protein, fat, carbohydrate, fibre, total sugars and sodium: not covered here.

How many calories are in tamarind rice?
No table prints one. IFCT 2017, the Indian Food Composition Tables from ICMR-NIN, prints raw foods (its few cooked rows are boiled and omelette eggs and roasted vermicelli) and no tamarind rice, no cooked rice dish and no cooking oil row, and USDA FoodData Central SR Legacy has no tamarind rice record. Worked from table rows and USDA peanut oil with weights that are our assumptions, one plate made from 90 g raw rice, 15 g tamarind pulp, 15 g groundnuts, 1 g mustard seeds, 1 g curry leaves, 2 g dry red chilli and 1 g fenugreek seeds and 12 g of peanut oil (about 2.7 teaspoons) comes to 560.8 kcal and 11.9 g protein; the same plate with more oil (90 g raw rice, 15 g tamarind pulp, 15 g groundnuts, 1 g mustard seeds, 1 g curry leaves, 2 g dry red chilli and 1 g fenugreek seeds and 25 g of peanut oil (about 1.9 tablespoons)) comes to 675.7 kcal and 11.9 g protein. These are estimates, not measured values.
How many calories are in 100 g or 1 plate of tamarind rice?
This page does not give one. No table prints a cooked tamarind rice or its weight, and the weight lost or gained in cooking is not printed anywhere, so a per 100 g or per plate figure would need a cooked weight we would be making up. The page works from stated raw weights instead; divide a plate's total by the number of portions you actually make.
How much protein is in tamarind rice?
Estimated from table protein per 100 g with our weights: 11.9 g in either plate (the oil adds none). With raw rice from 70 to 110 g it runs 9.4 to 14.4 g. The 90 g of raw rice supplies 7.1 g (IFCT A015: 7.94 g per 100 g) and the 15 g of groundnuts 3.5 g (IFCT H012: 23.65 g per 100 g).
Why is the more oil plate higher than the less oil plate?
Only the oil differs in this working: 25 g of peanut oil (221.0 kcal) against 12 g (106.1 kcal), by USDA SR Legacy 171410 at 884 kcal per 100 g. Everything else is the same, so the more oil plate is 114.9 kcal higher. The amounts of oil are our assumptions, not a measured plate.
How much does the oil add to tamarind rice?
By USDA SR Legacy 171410 each 5 g of peanut oil is 44.2 kcal, each teaspoon (4.5 g) 39.8 kcal and each tablespoon (13.5 g) 119.3 kcal. On the less oil plate the raw rice weight (70 to 110 g, with everything else scaled) moves it more than the oil (8 to 16 g): 201.0 kcal against 70.7 kcal; on the more oil plate the raw rice weight (70 to 110 g, with everything else scaled) moves it more than the oil (20 to 30 g): 201.0 kcal against 88.4 kcal.
Does this include jaggery, sesame oil, sesame seeds, asafoetida, turmeric, chana dal or salt?
No. Only the listed ingredients are counted: raw rice, tamarind pulp, groundnuts, mustard seeds, curry leaves, dry red chilli, fenugreek seeds and peanut oil. Jaggery, sesame seeds, a ready-made puliyogare powder, chana or urad dal in the tempering, asafoetida, turmeric, salt, the water the rice cooks in, and anything served with the rice, such as papad or curd, are not counted. The page gives no shop, restaurant or packaged tamarind rice figure.
What does the label on the USDA oil record mean?
USDA's record page shows a data-type label beside some fields and none beside others. The peanut oil record labels kcal "Calculated" and total sugars "Assumed zero (Insignificant amount or not naturally occurring in a food, such as fiber in meat)"; the other fields show no label; everything is printed exactly in the label table on this page. The gram, teaspoon and tablespoon kcal are our arithmetic (printed kcal per 100 g times the grams, divided by 100). IFCT 2017 prints no data-type labels.
