Join the NYUS waitlist"Rajma chawal calories", "rajma chawal calories and protein", "rajma chawal calories one plate", "rajma masala calories per 100g" and "rajma curry calories" are searched in India, and the answers online differ. No primary table has a rajma masala or rajma chawal record: IFCT 2017, the Indian Food Composition Tables from ICMR-NIN, prints raw, dry pulses and rice (and almost entirely raw foods; its few cooked rows are boiled and omelette eggs and roasted vermicelli) and no rajma masala, rajma chawal or other cooked dish, and no cooking oil row, and USDA FoodData Central SR Legacy has no rajma masala record. So this page does not quote a number. It works one portion of masala and one plate with rice out line by line: the raw rajma, raw rice and the masala's onion, tomato, garlic, ginger, cumin, chilli and turmeric from named IFCT 2017 rows and the oil from a USDA record, with weights that are our assumptions and the oil shown apart so you can see what it adds. They are estimates, shown so you can change the weights to match your pot. For USDA's boiled kidney beans per katori, with no gravy, see our rajma vs chole guide, for the raw pulses per 100 g our raw dal guide, and for the spoon values our ghee, oil and sugar guide.
The short answer
By our working, one portion of rajma masala (40 g raw brown rajma, onion 60 g, tomato 80 g, garlic 5 g, ginger 5 g, cumin seeds 1 g, green chilli 2 g, turmeric 0.5 g and 2 teaspoons of oil) is about 256.6 kcal and 9.8 g protein, and the same masala with 60 g of raw rice, a rajma chawal plate, is about 470.4 kcal and 14.6 g protein. Across 30 to 50 g of raw rajma and 1 to 3 teaspoons of oil the masala runs 187.1 to 326.1 kcal, and with 40 to 80 g of raw rice the plate runs 329.6 to 611.2 kcal, every cell with oil and rice. These are estimates from the weights below, not measured values and not from a record for the dish. Our reading: in the main plate the masala is the larger part (256.6 kcal against 213.8 kcal for the rice), and inside the masala the raw rajma is the largest line (119.0 kcal, against 79.6 kcal for the oil and 58.0 kcal for the vegetables and spices).
IFCT 2017 rows used, per 100 g
IFCT 2017 Table 1 prints, per 100 g edible portion, water, protein, ash, total fat, total dietary fibre, insoluble and soluble fibre, carbohydrate and energy in kJ. We read these 11 rows from the PDF text on 29 October 2026, as the mean of the regions shown; the kcal is ours (kJ divided by 4.184, to 0.1). IFCT prints no portion weights; the rajma and rice rows are raw and dry, so we count raw weights, and the cooked weight of beans or rice is not printed in any table. Brown rajma has 6 regions, black 2 and red 3.

The oil: USDA SR Legacy, per 100 g
IFCT 2017 has no cooking oil row, so the oil comes from USDA FoodData Central SR Legacy; it is a US record. Energy is USDA's kcal with the kJ beside it; water, protein, total fat and carbohydrate (by difference) are in g, then fibre (g), total sugars (g) and sodium (mg), all per 100 g.
| Food (USDA record name) | Source | Energy | Water · protein · fat · carbohydrate (g) | Fibre (g) · total sugars (g) · sodium (mg) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Oil, peanut, salad or cooking | SR Legacy 171410 | 884 kcal (3700 kJ) | 0 · 0 · 100 · 0 | 0 · 0 · 0 |
The data-type label on each USDA field, as the record shows it
USDA's record page shows a data-type label beside some fields and none beside others. This table copies what the record shows, read field by field from the nutrient table of the record page; "no label shown" means the record prints no label there. We do not interpret the labels beyond printing them. IFCT 2017 prints no such labels.
| Food (USDA record name) | Source | kcal | kJ | Carbohydrate by difference | Fibre | Total sugars | Water, protein, fat, sodium |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Oil, peanut, salad or cooking | SR Legacy 171410 | Calculated | no label shown | no label shown | no label shown | Assumed zero (Insignificant amount or not naturally occurring in a food, such as fiber in meat) | no label shown |
The household portions USDA prints for the oil
These are the entries in the record's Measures list, as printed; the other entry is 100 g. The kcal in the last column is ours: the printed kcal per 100 g times the grams, divided by 100, shown to 0.1.
| Food (USDA record name) | Source | Portion as USDA prints it | Energy for the portion (our arithmetic) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Oil, peanut, salad or cooking | SR Legacy 171410 | 1 tsp (4.5 g) | 39.8 kcal |
| Oil, peanut, salad or cooking | SR Legacy 171410 | 1 cup (216 g) | 1909.4 kcal |
| Oil, peanut, salad or cooking | SR Legacy 171410 | 1 tbsp (13.5 g) | 119.3 kcal |
The portion sums: 171410 1 tsp (4.5 g): 884 × 4.5 / 100 = 39.78, so 39.8 kcal; 171410 1 cup (216 g): 884 × 216 / 100 = 1909.44, so 1909.4 kcal; 171410 1 tbsp (13.5 g): 884 × 13.5 / 100 = 119.34, so 119.3 kcal. By the same arithmetic 1 teaspoon (4.5 g) is 39.8 kcal, 2 teaspoons 79.6 kcal and 3 teaspoons 119.3 kcal.
Worked example 1: rajma masala
Every weight here is our assumption for one portion, counted raw: 40 g of dry brown rajma (IFCT B019), a masala of onion, tomato, garlic, ginger, cumin seeds, green chilli and turmeric powder, and peanut oil. Each IFCT line is the kJ divided by 4.184, times the grams, divided by 100, to 0.1 kcal; the oil line is USDA's printed kcal per 100 g times the grams, divided by 100; protein is the table's protein per 100 g times the grams, divided by 100. Salt, coriander leaves, garam masala and lemon are not counted, and the water the beans are soaked and boiled in carries no energy.
| Ingredient (our weight) | Row | Grams | kcal per 100 g | kcal | Protein (g) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rajmah, brown (main case 40 g) | IFCT B019 | 40 g | 297.6 | 119.0 | 7.8 |
| Onion, big | IFCT G017 | 60 g | 48.0 | 28.8 | 0.9 |
| Tomato, ripe, hybrid | IFCT D075 | 80 g | 18.9 | 15.1 | 0.6 |
| Garlic, big clove | IFCT G011 | 5 g | 123.8 | 6.2 | 0.3 |
| Ginger, fresh | IFCT G014 | 5 g | 55.0 | 2.7 | 0.1 |
| Cumin seeds | IFCT G025 | 1 g | 304.5 | 3.0 | 0.1 |
| Chillies, green - all varieties | IFCT G008 | 2 g | 42.3 | 0.8 | 0.0 |
| Turmeric powder | IFCT G033 | 0.5 g | 280.6 | 1.4 | 0.0 |
| Oil, peanut, salad or cooking (main case 2 tsp) | SR Legacy 171410 | 9 g | 884.0 | 79.6 | 0.0 |
| Rajma masala, main case | 256.6 | 9.8 |
The grid varies the raw rajma (30, 40 or 50 g) and the oil (1, 2 or 3 teaspoons); the vegetables and spices stay as above.
| Rajma (raw, dry) | 1 tsp oil | 2 tsp oil | 3 tsp oil | Protein (g) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 30 g raw brown rajma | 187.1 | 226.9 | 266.6 | 7.9 |
| 40 g raw brown rajma (main case) | 216.8 | 256.6 | 296.3 | 9.8 |
| 50 g raw brown rajma | 246.6 | 286.4 | 326.1 | 11.8 |
The same masala with the other two IFCT rajma rows, 40 g raw each and 2 teaspoons of oil:
| Rajma (40 g raw each, same masala and 2 tsp oil) | Rajma alone, kcal | Masala, kcal | Protein (g) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rajmah, brown B019 (6 regions) | 119.0 | 256.6 | 9.8 |
| Rajmah, black B018 (2 regions) | 119.2 | 256.8 | 9.6 |
| Rajmah, red B020 (3 regions) | 119.7 | 257.3 | 10.0 |
Worked example 2: the rajma chawal plate
The plate adds raw milled rice (IFCT A015) to the main-case masala. The weight of rice is our assumption (40, 60 or 80 g raw); no table prints how much cooked rice that makes, so the page does not turn it into katori or cups.
| Ingredient (our weight) | Row | Grams | kcal per 100 g | kcal | Protein (g) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rice, raw, milled (main case 60 g) | IFCT A015 | 60 g | 356.4 | 213.8 | 4.8 |
| Rice (raw, milled) with the main-case masala | Rice alone, kcal | Plate, kcal | Protein (g) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 40 g raw rice | 142.5 | 399.1 | 13.0 |
| 60 g raw rice (main case) | 213.8 | 470.4 | 14.6 |
| 80 g raw rice | 285.1 | 541.7 | 16.2 |
The main case in parts
The single example used in the short answer; each line follows from the tables above and from the weights in the cell.
| Main case (our weights) | kcal | Protein (g) |
|---|---|---|
| Rajma masala: 40 g raw brown rajma, onion 60 g, tomato 80 g, garlic 5 g, ginger 5 g, cumin seeds 1 g, green chilli 2 g, turmeric 0.5 g and 2 teaspoons of oil | 256.6 | 9.8 |
| Rice, 60 g raw milled | 213.8 | 4.8 |
| Rajma chawal plate (masala and rice) | 470.4 | 14.6 |
What stands out in the numbers
- Inside the masala the raw rajma is the largest line: 40 g is 119.0 kcal (IFCT B019, 297.6 kcal per 100 g), against 79.6 kcal for 2 teaspoons of oil and 58.0 kcal for the vegetables and spices.
- What moves the result: in this working the raw rice weight (40 to 80 g) moves it most, 142.6 kcal, then the oil (1 to 3 teaspoons), 79.5 kcal, then the raw rajma weight (30 to 50 g), 59.5 kcal. Each teaspoon of oil is 39.8 kcal.
- Plate: 60 g of raw rice is 213.8 kcal and the main-case masala 256.6 kcal, so the plate is 470.4 kcal.
- Rajma colour hardly matters: brown, black and red rajma differ by 0.7 kcal in the masala, because IFCT prints close energy values for the three.
- Protein: about 9.8 g in the main-case masala and 14.6 g in the plate; the oil adds none.
- These are estimates: no record for the dish exists, the weights are ours, and cream, butter, a bigger portion or more oil will be higher.
Why these are estimates, not your plate
- No record exists for the dish. IFCT 2017 prints raw foods and no cooked dish, and USDA SR Legacy has no rajma masala record.
- The weights are assumptions. No table prints how much rajma, gravy base, oil or rice one portion takes; ours are stated so you can replace them.
- Raw weights. Rajma and rice take up water in cooking and no table prints the cooked weight, so the page counts raw dry weight and cannot say how many katori the masala or rice makes.
- No per 100 g figure. No table prints a cooked masala weight, so a calories-per-100-g number cannot be derived from these rows.
- US oil data. The oil row is a US record; IFCT has none.
- Labels are printed, not judged. The labels on the USDA record are its own words; we print them and draw no conclusion from them.
How to log it so the numbers hold
- Log it by parts. Weigh the rajma dry before soaking, estimate the onion and tomato, weigh the rice raw, and log the oil by its own weight (weight × figure ÷ 100); our ghee, oil and sugar guide has the spoon values.
- Say how much rice. Raw rice from 40 to 80 g moves the plate by 142.6 kcal.
- Say how much oil. It is an input this page cannot know; each teaspoon is 39.8 kcal.
- Log the roti, salad or raita separately. They are not in these figures.

What this page leaves out
- A measured calorie figure for rajma masala or rajma chawal as a dish: no primary record prints one, so every figure here is an estimate from stated weights.
- A calorie target, and any claim about what rajma or rice does to your body: we have not looked up any for any person, so we give none. If you have a medical condition or are pregnant, ask your doctor or dietitian.
- Salt, coriander leaves, garam masala, lemon, cream, butter, cashew paste and coconut, and other versions such as chole masala: not covered here; log them from their own rows.
- Restaurant, dhaba and packaged or canned rajma: no table prints a restaurant weight or oil use, so we give no such figure; read the pack for packaged ones.
- Brown, parboiled or other rice rows and other IFCT rows for the same vegetables: they exist and are not used here.
- Nutrients beyond energy, water, protein, fat, carbohydrate, fibre, total sugars and sodium: not covered here.

How many calories are in rajma masala?
No table prints one. IFCT 2017, the Indian Food Composition Tables from ICMR-NIN, prints raw, dry pulses and rice (and almost entirely raw foods; its few cooked rows are boiled and omelette eggs and roasted vermicelli) and no rajma masala, rajma chawal or other cooked dish, and no cooking oil row, and USDA FoodData Central SR Legacy has no rajma masala record. Worked from IFCT rows and USDA peanut oil with weights that are our assumptions, one portion of 40 g raw brown rajma, onion 60 g, tomato 80 g, garlic 5 g, ginger 5 g, cumin seeds 1 g, green chilli 2 g, turmeric 0.5 g and 2 teaspoons of oil comes to 256.6 kcal and 9.8 g protein; across 30 to 50 g of raw rajma and 1 to 3 teaspoons of oil (every cell has the oil) it is 187.1 to 326.1 kcal. These are estimates, not measured values.
How many calories are in rajma chawal?
Adding 60 g of raw rice (IFCT A015: 1491 kJ per 100 g, 356.4 kcal) to the main-case masala gives 470.4 kcal and 14.6 g protein; across 30 to 50 g of raw rajma, 1 to 3 teaspoons of oil and 40 to 80 g of raw rice it is 329.6 to 611.2 kcal. The rice is counted raw, because IFCT prints raw milled rice and no table prints the cooked weight, so the page does not say how many katori of cooked rice that is.
What are rajma masala calories per 100 g?
This page does not give one. No table prints a cooked rajma masala or its weight, so a per 100 g figure would need a cooked weight we would be making up. The IFCT rows are per 100 g of raw dry rajma (brown 297.6 kcal) and the page works from those and from stated weights instead.
How much protein is in rajma masala and rajma chawal?
Estimated from IFCT protein per 100 g with our weights: 9.8 g in the main-case masala (7.8 g from the 40 g of brown rajma, IFCT B019 19.5 g per 100 g) and 14.6 g in the plate with 60 g of raw rice (A015 7.94 g per 100 g). The oil adds none.
Does the colour of rajma change the calories?
In this working, brown (B019), black (B018) and red (B020) rajma in the main-case masala come to 256.6 kcal for brown, 256.8 kcal for black, 257.3 kcal for red, a spread of 0.7 kcal, because IFCT prints 1245 to 1252 kJ per 100 g for the three. Black has 2 regions and red 3 in IFCT, brown 6.
How much do the oil and the rice matter?
By USDA SR Legacy 171410 (peanut oil: 884 kcal per 100 g, 1 teaspoon 4.5 g) each teaspoon is 39.8 kcal, so the 2 teaspoons in the main case are 79.6 kcal. In this working the raw rice weight (40 to 80 g) moves the result most (142.6 kcal), then the oil (1 to 3 teaspoons) (79.5 kcal) and the raw rajma weight (30 to 50 g) (59.5 kcal).
Does this include cream, butter, rotis, restaurant versions or the onion salad on the side?
No. The listed vegetables and spices are all that is counted in the masala; no cream, butter, cashew paste or coconut is counted, and spice powders other than turmeric and salt have no row used here. Roti, salad and raita are separate, and no table prints a restaurant weight or oil use, so the page gives no restaurant figure.
What do Calculated and the other labels on the USDA oil record mean?
USDA's record page shows a data-type label beside some fields and none beside others. The record labels kcal Calculated and kJ no label; total sugars are labelled Assumed zero (Insignificant amount or not naturally occurring in a food, such as fiber in meat); the rest are printed exactly in the label table on this page. The teaspoon kcal is our arithmetic (printed kcal per 100 g times the grams, divided by 100). IFCT 2017 prints no data-type labels.
