Paneer Tikka Masala Calories: Less Oil and More Oil
Track this in NYUS. NYUS builds a workout plan and an Indian-food diet plan from your goal, body, schedule and food preferences.
Try NYUS free on AndroidThe figures on this page are built from IFCT 2017 Table 1 rows and, where Table 1 has no row, USDA FoodData Central SR Legacy records. No primary table has a paneer tikka masala record: IFCT 2017, the Indian Food Composition Tables from ICMR-NIN, prints raw foods (its few cooked rows are boiled and omelette eggs and roasted vermicelli), has a plain paneer row (L003) but no paneer tikka, no tikka masala gravy, no cream row and no cooking oil row, and USDA FoodData Central SR Legacy has no paneer tikka masala record. So this page does not quote a number. It works one plate out line by line: the paneer, onion, tomato, garlic, ginger and green chilli from named IFCT rows, the cream from a USDA record from named rows and the oil from a USDA record, with weights that are our assumptions and the oil shown apart so you can see what it adds, once with 10 g of oil and once with 25 g. They are estimates, shown so you can change the weights to match your pan. For paneer in butter masala, palak and matar gravies see our paneer curry guide, for grilled paneer our paneer tikka guide, for dry paneer tossed with Indian-Chinese flavours our chilli paneer guide, and for the spoon values our teaspoon guide.
The short answer
By our working, one plate of paneer tikka masala with a little oil (100 g paneer, 60 g onion, 100 g tomato, 4 g garlic, 4 g fresh ginger, 3 g green chilli and 15 g cream (USDA heavy whipping cream) and 10 g of peanut oil (about 2.2 teaspoons)) is about 501.0 kcal and 21.5 g protein, and one plate with more oil (100 g paneer, 60 g onion, 100 g tomato, 4 g garlic, 4 g fresh ginger, 3 g green chilli and 15 g cream (USDA heavy whipping cream) and 25 g of peanut oil (about 1.9 tablespoons)) is about 633.6 kcal and 21.5 g protein. Scaling the paneer from 80 to 120 g (every other ingredient scaled with it) and the oil from 8 to 12 g the less oil plate runs 400.9 to 601.1 kcal, and with 20 to 30 g of oil the more oil plate runs 507.0 to 760.2 kcal. These are estimates from the weights below, not measured values, not from a paneer tikka masala record and not a shop or restaurant figure. Our reading: the parts of the less oil main case rank the paneer 305.4 kcal, the oil 88.4 kcal, the cream 51.0 kcal, the onion and tomato 47.7 kcal, the garlic, ginger and green chilli 8.5 kcal; the parts of the more oil main case rank the paneer 305.4 kcal, the oil 221.0 kcal, the cream 51.0 kcal, the onion and tomato 47.7 kcal, the garlic, ginger and green chilli 8.5 kcal; and the more oil plate is 132.6 kcal above the other because only the oil differs.
Table rows used, per 100 g
IFCT 2017 Table 1 prints, per 100 g edible portion, water, protein, ash, total fat, total dietary fibre, insoluble and soluble fibre, carbohydrate and energy in kJ. We read these 6 rows from the PDF text on 3 November 2026, as the mean of the regions shown (PDF pages in the Sources); the kcal is ours (kJ divided by 4.184, to 0.1). IFCT prints no portion weights; every row here is raw, so we count raw weight, and IFCT prints plain raw paneer only; whether the cubes are grilled first, and the water the gravy loses in simmering, are not printed in any table, and the cream is the USDA heavy whipping cream record, not every cream used at home.

The oil and cream: USDA SR Legacy, per 100 g
IFCT 2017 Table 1 has no cooking oil row and no cream row, so those come from USDA FoodData Central SR Legacy; they are US records. Energy is USDA's kcal with the kJ beside it; water, protein, total fat and carbohydrate (by difference) are in g, then fibre (g), total sugars (g) and sodium (mg), all per 100 g.
| Food (USDA record name) | Source | Energy | Water · protein · fat · carbohydrate (g) | Fibre (g) · total sugars (g) · sodium (mg) |

The data-type label on each USDA field, as the record shows it
USDA's record page shows a data-type label beside some fields and none beside others. This table copies what the record shows, read field by field from the nutrient table of the record page; "no label shown" means the record prints no label there, and "not printed" means the record has no row for that field. We do not interpret the labels beyond printing them. IFCT 2017 prints no such labels.

The household portions USDA prints for the USDA records
These are the entries in the records' Measures lists, as printed; the other entry is 100 g. This page counts the oil in grams and takes 1 teaspoon as 4.5 g and 1 tablespoon as 13.5 g, the oil record's own measures. The kcal in the last column is ours: the printed kcal per 100 g times the grams, divided by 100, shown to 0.1.
| Food (USDA record name) | Source | Portion as USDA prints it | Energy for the portion (our arithmetic) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Oil, peanut, salad or cooking | SR Legacy 171410 | 1 tsp (4.5 g) | 39.8 kcal |
| Oil, peanut, salad or cooking | SR Legacy 171410 | 1 cup (216 g) | 1909.4 kcal |
| Oil, peanut, salad or cooking | SR Legacy 171410 | 1 tbsp (13.5 g) | 119.3 kcal |
| Cream, fluid, heavy whipping | SR Legacy 170859 | 1 cup, whipped (120 g) | 408.0 kcal |
| Cream, fluid, heavy whipping | SR Legacy 170859 | 1 cup, fluid (yields 2 cups whipped) (238 g) | 809.2 kcal |
| Cream, fluid, heavy whipping | SR Legacy 170859 | 1 tbsp (15 g) | 51.0 kcal |
| Cream, fluid, heavy whipping | SR Legacy 170859 | 1 fl oz (29.8 g) | 101.3 kcal |
The portion sums: 171410 1 tsp (4.5 g): 884 × 4.5 / 100 = 39.78, so 39.8 kcal; 171410 1 cup (216 g): 884 × 216 / 100 = 1909.44, so 1909.4 kcal; 171410 1 tbsp (13.5 g): 884 × 13.5 / 100 = 119.34, so 119.3 kcal; 170859 1 cup, whipped (120 g): 340 × 120 / 100 = 408.00, so 408.0 kcal; 170859 1 cup, fluid (yields 2 cups whipped) (238 g): 340 × 238 / 100 = 809.20, so 809.2 kcal; 170859 1 tbsp (15 g): 340 × 15 / 100 = 51.00, so 51.0 kcal; 170859 1 fl oz (29.8 g): 340 × 29.8 / 100 = 101.32, so 101.3 kcal. By the same arithmetic 5 g of oil is 44.2 kcal and 10 g 88.4 kcal.
Worked example 1: paneer tikka masala with a little oil
Every weight here is our assumption for one plate, counted raw: paneer cubes simmered in a gravy of onion, tomato, garlic, ginger and green chilli finished with cream, counted as one plate from the raw weights (our assumption: 100 g of paneer and 15 g of cream); the oil is the oil the plate takes up, an amount we assume, not the oil put in the pan. Each IFCT line is the kJ divided by 4.184, times the grams, divided by 100, to 0.1 kcal; each USDA line is the printed kcal per 100 g times the grams, divided by 100; protein is the table's protein per 100 g times the grams, divided by 100. Salt and spice powders are not counted.

The two main cases side by side
These are the single examples used in the short answer; each follows from the tables above and from the weights in the cell.
| Main case (our weights) | kcal | Protein (g) |
|---|---|---|
| Less oil, one plate: 100 g paneer, 60 g onion, 100 g tomato, 4 g garlic, 4 g fresh ginger, 3 g green chilli and 15 g cream (USDA heavy whipping cream) and 10 g of peanut oil (about 2.2 teaspoons) | 501.0 | 21.5 |
| More oil, one plate: 100 g paneer, 60 g onion, 100 g tomato, 4 g garlic, 4 g fresh ginger, 3 g green chilli and 15 g cream (USDA heavy whipping cream) and 25 g of peanut oil (about 1.9 tablespoons) | 633.6 | 21.5 |
What stands out in the numbers
- Less oil, part by part: the paneer 305.4 kcal, the oil 88.4 kcal, the cream 51.0 kcal, the onion and tomato 47.7 kcal, the garlic, ginger and green chilli 8.5 kcal. Paneer is 305.4 kcal per 100 g (IFCT L003), the heavy whipping cream 340 kcal per 100 g (USDA 170859) and the oil 884 kcal per 100 g (USDA 171410).
- More oil, part by part: the paneer 305.4 kcal, the oil 221.0 kcal, the cream 51.0 kcal, the onion and tomato 47.7 kcal, the garlic, ginger and green chilli 8.5 kcal; against the less oil plate the oil is 132.6 kcal higher, and that is the whole difference between the plates.
- Size against oil: on the less oil plate the paneer weight (80 to 120 g) moves it more than the oil (8 to 12 g): 164.8 kcal against 35.4 kcal; on the more oil plate the paneer weight (80 to 120 g) moves it more than the oil (20 to 30 g): 164.8 kcal against 88.4 kcal. Each 5 g of oil is 44.2 kcal.
- Protein: about 21.5 g in either plate (the oil adds none).
- These are estimates: no paneer tikka masala record exists, the weights are ours, and a different weight of any ingredient in the tables above will change them.
Why these are estimates, not your paneer tikka masala
- No record exists for the dish. IFCT 2017 prints raw foods and no cooked dish, and the USDA SR Legacy searches found no paneer tikka masala record (0 results for paneer tikka masala, 0 results for tikka masala, 0 results for paneer). There is no SR Legacy paneer record at all (0 results for paneer, tikka masala and paneer tikka masala); the cream is used as an ingredient from record 170859.
- The weights are assumptions. No table prints how much of each ingredient or of the oil a plate takes; ours are stated so you can replace them.
- Raw weights. No table prints the weight of the paneer tikka masala after cooking, so the page counts raw weight and cannot give a per 100 g or per plate figure.
- Only the oil in the pan is counted. Oil used any other way, or left in the pan, is not counted unless it is in the oil weight.
- US data. The oil row and the cream row are US records; IFCT Table 1 has no oil row.
- Labels are printed, not judged. Calculated and Assumed zero are USDA's words on the record; we print them and draw no conclusion from them.
How to log it so the numbers hold
- Log it by parts. Weigh the raw ingredients once for your usual pan, and log the oil by its own weight (weight × figure ÷ 100); our ghee, oil and sugar guide has the spoon values.
- Say how much oil. It is an input this page cannot know; 5 g of oil is 44.2 kcal.
- Say how the pan was divided. The page gives one plate from raw weights; divide the pan's total by the portions you actually made.
- Say what else went in. Anything not in the listed ingredients is not counted.

What this page leaves out
- A measured calorie figure for paneer tikka masala as a dish: no primary record prints one, so every figure here is an estimate from stated weights.
- A calorie target, and any claim about what the ingredients or the oil do to your body: we have not looked up any for any person, so we give none. If you have a medical condition or are pregnant, ask your doctor or dietitian.
- Other versions and add-ins, such as a curd marinade, butter or cashew paste, grilling the paneer first and a restaurant plate: not counted here; log them from their own rows (butter masala, palak and matar paneer are in our paneer curry guide, grilled paneer tikka in our paneer tikka guide).
- Other fats: ghee, butter and other oils were not looked up for this page.
- Shop, restaurant and packaged paneer tikka masala: no table prints a weight or oil use, so we give no such figure; read the pack for packaged ones.
- Per 100 g and per plate figures: no table prints a cooked weight, so none is given here.
- Nutrients beyond energy, water, protein, fat, carbohydrate, fibre, total sugars and sodium: not covered here.

How many calories are in paneer tikka masala?
No table prints one. IFCT 2017, the Indian Food Composition Tables from ICMR-NIN, prints raw foods (its few cooked rows are boiled and omelette eggs and roasted vermicelli), has a plain paneer row (L003) but no paneer tikka, no tikka masala gravy, no cream row and no cooking oil row, and USDA FoodData Central SR Legacy has no paneer tikka masala record. Worked from table rows and USDA peanut oil with weights that are our assumptions, one plate made from 100 g paneer, 60 g onion, 100 g tomato, 4 g garlic, 4 g fresh ginger, 3 g green chilli and 15 g cream (USDA heavy whipping cream) and 10 g of peanut oil (about 2.2 teaspoons) comes to 501.0 kcal and 21.5 g protein; the same plate with more oil (100 g paneer, 60 g onion, 100 g tomato, 4 g garlic, 4 g fresh ginger, 3 g green chilli and 15 g cream (USDA heavy whipping cream) and 25 g of peanut oil (about 1.9 tablespoons)) comes to 633.6 kcal and 21.5 g protein. These are estimates, not measured values.
How many calories are in 100 g or 1 plate of paneer tikka masala?
This page does not give one. No table prints a cooked paneer tikka masala or its weight, and the weight lost or gained in cooking is not printed anywhere, so a per 100 g or per plate figure would need a cooked weight we would be making up. The page works from stated raw weights instead; divide a plate's total by the number of portions you actually make.
How much protein is in paneer tikka masala?
Estimated from table protein per 100 g with our weights: 21.5 g in either plate (the oil adds none). With paneer from 80 to 120 g it runs 17.1 to 25.6 g. The 100 g of paneer supplies 18.9 g (IFCT L003: 18.86 g per 100 g) and the 15 g of cream 0.4 g (USDA 170859: 2.84 g per 100 g).
Why is the more oil plate higher than the less oil plate?
Only the oil differs in this working: 25 g of peanut oil (221.0 kcal) against 10 g (88.4 kcal), by USDA SR Legacy 171410 at 884 kcal per 100 g. Everything else is the same, so the more oil plate is 132.6 kcal higher. The amounts of oil are our assumptions, not a measured plate.
How much does the oil add to paneer tikka masala?
By USDA SR Legacy 171410 each 5 g of peanut oil is 44.2 kcal, each teaspoon (4.5 g) 39.8 kcal and each tablespoon (13.5 g) 119.3 kcal. On the less oil plate the paneer weight (80 to 120 g, with everything else scaled) moves it more than the oil (8 to 12 g): 164.8 kcal against 35.4 kcal; on the more oil plate the paneer weight (80 to 120 g, with everything else scaled) moves it more than the oil (20 to 30 g): 164.8 kcal against 88.4 kcal.
Does this include a curd marinade, butter, cashew paste, tikka masala spice mix, kasuri methi, sugar or salt?
No. Only the listed ingredients are counted: paneer, onion, tomato, garlic, fresh ginger, green chilli, cream (USDA heavy whipping cream) and peanut oil. A curd marinade for the paneer, butter, cashew paste, a ground spice mix, kasuri methi, sugar, salt, the water added, and the naan or rice served with it, are not counted. The page gives no shop, restaurant or packaged paneer tikka masala figure.
What does the label on the USDA oil record mean?
USDA's record page shows a data-type label beside some fields and none beside others. The peanut oil record labels kcal "Calculated" and total sugars "Assumed zero (Insignificant amount or not naturally occurring in a food, such as fiber in meat)"; the other fields show no label; everything is printed exactly in the label table on this page.
