Dahi Vada Calories: Less Oil and More Oil
Track this in NYUS. NYUS builds a workout plan and an Indian-food diet plan from your goal, body, schedule and food preferences.
Try NYUS free on AndroidThe figures on this page are built from IFCT 2017 Table 1 rows and, where Table 1 has no row, USDA FoodData Central SR Legacy records. No primary table has a dahi vada record: IFCT 2017, the Indian Food Composition Tables from ICMR-NIN, prints raw foods (its few cooked rows are boiled and omelette eggs and roasted vermicelli), has no curd or yogurt row, and has no dahi vada, no fried dish and no cooking oil row, and USDA FoodData Central SR Legacy has no dahi vada record. So this page does not quote a number. It works one plate out line by line: the dry urad dal, cumin seeds and green chilli from named IFCT rows, the curd from a USDA record from named rows and the oil from a USDA record, with weights that are our assumptions and the oil shown apart so you can see what it adds, once with 10 g of oil and once with 20 g. They are estimates, shown so you can change the weights to match your pan. For the curd records by the bowl see our curd per bowl guide, for another curd dish worked out the same way our kadhi guide, for curd with rice our curd rice guide, and for the spoon values our ghee, oil and sugar guide.
The short answer
By our working, one plate of dahi vada with a little oil (50 g dry urad dal, 150 g plain whole-milk curd, 1 g cumin seeds and 2 g green chilli and 10 g of peanut oil (about 2.2 teaspoons)) is about 345.7 kcal and 16.8 g protein, and one plate with more oil (50 g dry urad dal, 150 g plain whole-milk curd, 1 g cumin seeds and 2 g green chilli and 20 g of peanut oil (about 1.5 tablespoons)) is about 434.1 kcal and 16.8 g protein. Scaling the dry urad dal from 40 to 60 g (every other ingredient scaled with it) and the oil from 5 to 15 g the less oil plate runs 250.1 to 441.6 kcal, and with 15 to 25 g of oil the more oil plate runs 338.5 to 530.0 kcal. These are estimates from the weights below, not measured values, not from a dahi vada record and not a shop or restaurant figure. Our reading: the parts of the less oil main case rank the dry urad dal 162.0 kcal, the curd 91.5 kcal, the oil 88.4 kcal, the cumin seeds and green chilli 3.8 kcal; the parts of the more oil main case rank the oil 176.8 kcal, the dry urad dal 162.0 kcal, the curd 91.5 kcal, the cumin seeds and green chilli 3.8 kcal; and the more oil plate is 88.4 kcal above the other because only the oil differs.
Table rows used, per 100 g
IFCT 2017 Table 1 prints, per 100 g edible portion, water, protein, ash, total fat, total dietary fibre, insoluble and soluble fibre, carbohydrate and energy in kJ. We read these 3 rows from the PDF text on 3 November 2026, as the mean of the regions shown (PDF pages in the Sources); the kcal is ours (kJ divided by 4.184, to 0.1). IFCT prints no portion weights; every row here is raw, so we count raw weight, and the water the dal takes up when it is soaked and ground, and the weight the vadas gain or lose in frying, are not printed in any table; the dal is counted dry and the curd as the USDA yogurt record, which is not the same as home-set dahi.
| Food (IFCT 2017 name) | Source | Regions | Energy | Water · protein · fat · carbohydrate (g) | Total dietary fibre (g) |

The oil and curd (plain whole-milk yogurt): USDA SR Legacy, per 100 g
IFCT 2017 Table 1 has no cooking oil row and no curd row, so those come from USDA FoodData Central SR Legacy; they are US records. Energy is USDA's kcal with the kJ beside it; water, protein, total fat and carbohydrate (by difference) are in g, then fibre (g), total sugars (g) and sodium (mg), all per 100 g.
| Food (USDA record name) | Source | Energy | Water · protein · fat · carbohydrate (g) | Fibre (g) · total sugars (g) · sodium (mg) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Oil, peanut, salad or cooking | SR Legacy 171410 | 884 kcal (3700 kJ) | 0 · 0 · 100 · 0 | 0 · 0 · 0 |

The data-type label on each USDA field, as the record shows it
USDA's record page shows a data-type label beside some fields and none beside others. This table copies what the record shows, read field by field from the nutrient table of the record page; "no label shown" means the record prints no label there, and "not printed" means the record has no row for that field. We do not interpret the labels beyond printing them. IFCT 2017 prints no such labels.
| Food (USDA record name) | Source | kcal | kJ | Carbohydrate by difference | Fibre | Total sugars | Water, protein, fat, sodium |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Oil, peanut, salad or cooking | SR Legacy 171410 | Calculated | no label shown | no label shown | no label shown | Assumed zero (Insignificant amount or not naturally occurring in a food, such as fiber in meat) | no label shown |

The household portions USDA prints for the USDA records
These are the entries in the records' Measures lists, as printed; the other entry is 100 g. This page counts the oil in grams and takes 1 teaspoon as 4.5 g and 1 tablespoon as 13.5 g, the oil record's own measures. The kcal in the last column is ours: the printed kcal per 100 g times the grams, divided by 100, shown to 0.1.
| Food (USDA record name) | Source | Portion as USDA prints it | Energy for the portion (our arithmetic) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Oil, peanut, salad or cooking | SR Legacy 171410 | 1 tsp (4.5 g) | 39.8 kcal |
| Oil, peanut, salad or cooking | SR Legacy 171410 | 1 cup (216 g) | 1909.4 kcal |
| Oil, peanut, salad or cooking | SR Legacy 171410 | 1 tbsp (13.5 g) | 119.3 kcal |
| Yogurt, plain, whole milk | SR Legacy 171284 | 1 container (8 oz) (227 g) | 138.5 kcal |
| Yogurt, plain, whole milk | SR Legacy 171284 | 1 container (6 oz) (170 g) | 103.7 kcal |
| Yogurt, plain, whole milk | SR Legacy 171284 | 0.5 container (4 oz) (113 g) | 68.9 kcal |
| Yogurt, plain, whole milk | SR Legacy 171284 | 1 cup (8 fl oz) (245 g) | 149.5 kcal |
The portion sums: 171410 1 tsp (4.5 g): 884 × 4.5 / 100 = 39.78, so 39.8 kcal; 171410 1 cup (216 g): 884 × 216 / 100 = 1909.44, so 1909.4 kcal; 171410 1 tbsp (13.5 g): 884 × 13.5 / 100 = 119.34, so 119.3 kcal; 171284 1 container (8 oz) (227 g): 61 × 227 / 100 = 138.47, so 138.5 kcal; 171284 1 container (6 oz) (170 g): 61 × 170 / 100 = 103.70, so 103.7 kcal; 171284 0.5 container (4 oz) (113 g): 61 × 113 / 100 = 68.93, so 68.9 kcal; 171284 1 cup (8 fl oz) (245 g): 61 × 245 / 100 = 149.45, so 149.5 kcal. By the same arithmetic 5 g of oil is 44.2 kcal and 10 g 88.4 kcal.
Worked example 1: dahi vada with a little oil
Every weight here is our assumption for one plate, counted raw: soaked, ground urad dal fried into vadas and put in curd with cumin and green chilli, counted as one plate (our assumption: dal for about six vadas); the oil is the oil the vadas take up in frying, an amount we assume, not the oil put in the pan. Each IFCT line is the kJ divided by 4.184, times the grams, divided by 100, to 0.1 kcal; each USDA line is the printed kcal per 100 g times the grams, divided by 100; protein is the table's protein per 100 g times the grams, divided by 100. Salt and spice powders are not counted.
| Ingredient (our weight) | Row | Grams | kcal per 100 g | kcal | Protein (g) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Black gram, dal | IFCT B003 | 50 g | 324.1 | 162.0 | 11.5 |
| Yogurt, plain, whole milk | SR Legacy 171284 | 150 g | 61.0 | 91.5 | 5.2 |

| Dahi vada with less oil, main case (one plate) | 345.7 | 16.8 |
The grid varies the raw dry urad dal per plate (40, 50, 60 g, with every other ingredient scaled by the same factor and rounded to 0.1 g) and the oil (5, 10, 15 g); the weights in the table above are the 50 g main case.
| dry urad dal per plate (all other ingredients scaled with it) | 5 g oil | 10 g oil | 15 g oil | Protein (g) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 40 g dry urad dal | 250.1 | 294.3 | 338.5 | 13.5 |
| 50 g dry urad dal (main case) | 301.5 | 345.7 | 389.9 | 16.8 |
| 60 g dry urad dal | 353.2 | 397.4 | 441.6 | 20.3 |
Worked example 2: dahi vada with more oil
Same method and the same 50 g dry urad dal, 150 g plain whole-milk curd, 1 g cumin seeds and 2 g green chilli; the 10 g of oil becomes 20 g. This is our assumed recipe, not a measured plate.
| Ingredient (our weight) | Row | Grams | kcal per 100 g | kcal | Protein (g) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Black gram, dal | IFCT B003 | 50 g | 324.1 | 162.0 | 11.5 |
| Yogurt, plain, whole milk | SR Legacy 171284 | 150 g | 61.0 | 91.5 | 5.2 |
| Cumin seeds | IFCT G025 | 1 g | 304.5 | 3.0 | 0.1 |
| Chillies, green - all varieties | IFCT G008 | 2 g | 42.3 | 0.8 | 0.0 |
| Oil, peanut, salad or cooking (main case, about 1.5 tbsp) | SR Legacy 171410 | 20 g | 884.0 | 176.8 | 0.0 |
| Dahi vada with more oil, main case (one plate) | 434.1 | 16.8 |
The grid varies the raw dry urad dal per plate (40, 50, 60 g, with every other ingredient scaled by the same factor and rounded to 0.1 g) and the oil (15, 20, 25 g); the weights in the table above are the 50 g main case.
| dry urad dal per plate (all other ingredients scaled with it) | 15 g oil | 20 g oil | 25 g oil | Protein (g) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 40 g dry urad dal | 338.5 | 382.7 | 426.9 | 13.5 |
| 50 g dry urad dal (main case) | 389.9 | 434.1 | 478.3 | 16.8 |
| 60 g dry urad dal | 441.6 | 485.8 | 530.0 | 20.3 |
The two main cases side by side
These are the single examples used in the short answer; each follows from the tables above and from the weights in the cell.
| Main case (our weights) | kcal | Protein (g) |
|---|---|---|
| Less oil, one plate: 50 g dry urad dal, 150 g plain whole-milk curd, 1 g cumin seeds and 2 g green chilli and 10 g of peanut oil (about 2.2 teaspoons) | 345.7 | 16.8 |
| More oil, one plate: 50 g dry urad dal, 150 g plain whole-milk curd, 1 g cumin seeds and 2 g green chilli and 20 g of peanut oil (about 1.5 tablespoons) | 434.1 | 16.8 |
What stands out in the numbers
- Less oil, part by part: the dry urad dal 162.0 kcal, the curd 91.5 kcal, the oil 88.4 kcal, the cumin seeds and green chilli 3.8 kcal. Dry urad dal is 324.1 kcal per 100 g (IFCT B003), plain whole-milk yogurt 61 kcal per 100 g (USDA 171284) and the oil 884 kcal per 100 g (USDA 171410).
- More oil, part by part: the oil 176.8 kcal, the dry urad dal 162.0 kcal, the curd 91.5 kcal, the cumin seeds and green chilli 3.8 kcal; against the less oil plate the oil is 88.4 kcal higher, and that is the whole difference between the plates.
- Size against oil: on the less oil plate the dry urad dal weight (40 to 60 g) moves it more than the oil (5 to 15 g): 103.1 kcal against 88.4 kcal; on the more oil plate the dry urad dal weight (40 to 60 g) moves it more than the oil (15 to 25 g): 103.1 kcal against 88.4 kcal. Each 5 g of oil is 44.2 kcal.
- Protein: about 16.8 g in either plate (the oil adds none).
- These are estimates: no dahi vada record exists, the weights are ours, and a different weight of any ingredient in the tables above will change them.
Why these are estimates, not your dahi vada
- No record exists for the dish. IFCT 2017 prints raw foods and no cooked dish, and the USDA SR Legacy searches found no dahi vada record (0 results for dahi vada, 0 results for curd vada, 0 results for dahi bhalla, 0 results for vada). There is no SR Legacy vada record at all (0 results for vada).
- The weights are assumptions. No table prints how much of each ingredient or of the oil a plate takes; ours are stated so you can replace them.
- Raw weights. No table prints the weight of the dahi vada after cooking, so the page counts raw weight and cannot give a per 100 g or per plate figure.
- Only the oil in the pan is counted. Oil used any other way, or left in the pan, is not counted unless it is in the oil weight.
- US data. The oil row and the curd (plain whole-milk yogurt) row are US records; IFCT Table 1 has no oil row.
- Labels are printed, not judged. Calculated and Assumed zero are USDA's words on the record; we print them and draw no conclusion from them.
How to log it so the numbers hold
- Log it by parts. Weigh the raw ingredients once for your usual pan, and log the oil by its own weight (weight × figure ÷ 100); our ghee, oil and sugar guide has the spoon values.
- Say how much oil. It is an input this page cannot know; 5 g of oil is 44.2 kcal.
- Say how the pan was divided. The page gives one plate from raw weights; divide the pan's total by the portions you actually made.
- Say what else went in. Anything not in the listed ingredients is not counted.

What this page leaves out
- A measured calorie figure for dahi vada as a dish: no primary record prints one, so every figure here is an estimate from stated weights.
- A calorie target, and any claim about what the ingredients or the oil do to your body: we have not looked up any for any person, so we give none. If you have a medical condition or are pregnant, ask your doctor or dietitian.
- Other versions and add-ins, such as chutneys, sev, boondi, pomegranate, aloo dum on top, moong dal vadas and plain medu vada without curd (worked out in our medu vada guide): not counted here; log them from their own rows (the curd records are in our curd per bowl guide).
- Other fats: ghee, butter and other oils were not looked up for this page.
- Shop, restaurant and packaged dahi vada: no table prints a weight or oil use, so we give no such figure; read the pack for packaged ones.
- Per 100 g and per plate figures: no table prints a cooked weight, so none is given here.
- Nutrients beyond energy, water, protein, fat, carbohydrate, fibre, total sugars and sodium: not covered here.

How many calories are in dahi vada?
No table prints one. IFCT 2017, the Indian Food Composition Tables from ICMR-NIN, prints raw foods (its few cooked rows are boiled and omelette eggs and roasted vermicelli), has no curd or yogurt row, and has no dahi vada, no fried dish and no cooking oil row, and USDA FoodData Central SR Legacy has no dahi vada record. Worked from table rows and USDA peanut oil with weights that are our assumptions, one plate made from 50 g dry urad dal, 150 g plain whole-milk curd, 1 g cumin seeds and 2 g green chilli and 10 g of peanut oil (about 2.2 teaspoons) comes to 345.7 kcal and 16.8 g protein; the same plate with more oil (50 g dry urad dal, 150 g plain whole-milk curd, 1 g cumin seeds and 2 g green chilli and 20 g of peanut oil (about 1.5 tablespoons)) comes to 434.1 kcal and 16.8 g protein. These are estimates, not measured values.
How many calories are in 100 g or 1 plate of dahi vada?
This page does not give one. No table prints a cooked dahi vada or its weight, and the weight lost or gained in cooking is not printed anywhere, so a per 100 g or per plate figure would need a cooked weight we would be making up. The page works from stated raw weights instead; divide a plate's total by the number of portions you actually make.
How much protein is in dahi vada?
Estimated from table protein per 100 g with our weights: 16.8 g in either plate (the oil adds none). With dry urad dal from 40 to 60 g it runs 13.5 to 20.3 g. The 50 g of dry urad dal supplies 11.5 g (IFCT B003: 23.06 g per 100 g) and the 150 g of curd 5.2 g (USDA 171284: 3.47 g per 100 g).
Why is the more oil plate higher than the less oil plate?
Only the oil differs in this working: 20 g of peanut oil (176.8 kcal) against 10 g (88.4 kcal), by USDA SR Legacy 171410 at 884 kcal per 100 g. Everything else is the same, so the more oil plate is 88.4 kcal higher. The amounts of oil are our assumptions, not a measured plate.
How much does the oil add to dahi vada?
By USDA SR Legacy 171410 each 5 g of peanut oil is 44.2 kcal, each teaspoon (4.5 g) 39.8 kcal and each tablespoon (13.5 g) 119.3 kcal. On the less oil plate the dry urad dal weight (40 to 60 g, with everything else scaled) moves it more than the oil (5 to 15 g): 103.1 kcal against 88.4 kcal; on the more oil plate the dry urad dal weight (40 to 60 g, with everything else scaled) moves it more than the oil (15 to 25 g): 103.1 kcal against 88.4 kcal.
Does this include tamarind or mint chutney, sev, boondi, sugar or salt?
No. Only the listed ingredients are counted: dry urad dal, plain whole-milk curd, cumin seeds, green chilli and peanut oil. Tamarind and mint chutney, sev, boondi, sugar, chaat masala, roasted cumin, salt, the soaking water and the frying oil left in the pan, and anything else not listed are not counted. The page gives no shop, restaurant or packaged dahi vada figure.
What does the label on the USDA oil record mean?
USDA's record page shows a data-type label beside some fields and none beside others. The peanut oil record labels kcal "Calculated" and total sugars "Assumed zero (Insignificant amount or not naturally occurring in a food, such as fiber in meat)"; the other fields show no label; everything is printed exactly in the label table on this page. The gram, teaspoon and tablespoon kcal are our arithmetic (printed kcal per 100 g times the grams, divided by 100). IFCT 2017 prints no data-type labels.
