"Coconut chutney calories", "mint chutney calories", "green chutney calories", "tamarind chutney calories", "imli chutney calories", "tomato chutney calories", "peanut chutney calories" and "mango chutney calories" are searched in India, usually per tablespoon or per 100 g. This guide starts with a plain fact: neither of the two primary tables we use has a chutney record. IFCT 2017, the Indian Food Composition Tables from ICMR-NIN, prints almost entirely raw foods (its few cooked rows are boiled and omelette eggs and roasted vermicelli) and no chutney, sauce or other mixed dish, and USDA FoodData Central SR Legacy returns 0 results for chutney. So there is no printed per-tablespoon figure to quote, and this page does not make one up. It prints the 17 IFCT ingredient rows and the USDA records we use, exactly as the tables give them, so you can see what is and is not known. For idli and dosa plates see our idli sambar full-plate guide, and for dips that are not chutneys our dips guide.

The short answer

No chutney has a calorie figure in IFCT 2017 or in USDA SR Legacy, and none has a tablespoon weight, so any number you see per tablespoon comes from somewhere else, such as a recipe or a pack label, not from these tables. What the tables do print is the raw ingredient: per 100 g, IFCT 2017 has coconut, kernel, dry at 2611 kJ (624.0 kcal by our arithmetic) as the most energy-dense of the 17 rows here and tomato, ripe, hybrid at 79 kJ (18.9 kcal) as the least. Our reading: a chutney's energy depends on how much coconut, nut, jaggery or oil it holds against water and leaves, which the tables cannot tell you, so the honest way to log one is by its ingredients and their weights.

Which ingredient rows sit behind which chutney

This is our list of ingredients commonly named in home recipes for each chutney. Recipes differ a great deal, and this is not a recipe, a source figure or a weight: it only tells you which rows below to look at.

IFCT 2017: the ingredient rows, per 100 g

IFCT 2017 Table 1 prints per 100 g edible portion: water, protein, ash, total fat, total dietary fibre, insoluble and soluble fibre, carbohydrate and energy in kJ. We read these 17 rows from the PDF text on 29 October 2026, as the mean of the regions shown; the kcal is ours (kJ divided by 4.184, to 0.1). Jaggery and lemon juice have no fibre column in the book. These are raw foods, not chutneys, and a row is not a tablespoon: IFCT prints no portion weights.

USDA SR Legacy: the records used here, per 100 g

SR Legacy has no chutney record: searches on 29 October 2026 for chutney, chatni, mint chutney, coconut chutney and tamarind chutney returned 0 results. The five records below are the ones we can cite: three ingredients (coconut meat raw and dried, and raw tamarinds) and two prepared peanut sauces. The sauces are not chutneys; they are the two records on this page that print a tablespoon. Energy is USDA's kcal with the kJ beside it; water, protein, total fat and carbohydrate (by difference) are in g, then fibre (g), total sugars (g) and sodium (mg), all per 100 g. These are US records on US samples.

The data-type label on each USDA field, as the record shows it

USDA's record pages show a data-type label beside some fields and none beside others. This table copies what each record shows; "no label shown" means the record prints no label there, and "not printed" means the record has no row for that field. We do not interpret the labels beyond printing them. IFCT 2017 prints no such labels.

The household portions USDA prints

These are the entries in each USDA record's Measures list, as printed; the other entry on every record is 100 g. The kcal in the last column is ours: the printed kcal per 100 g times the grams, divided by 100, shown to 0.1 with half rounding up. Only the two peanut sauce records print a tablespoon; the coconut meat and tamarind records print a cup, a piece, a medium nut or a fruit, and no tablespoon.

Where NYUS fits (our app)

We make NYUS, so read this as ours. NYUS is an AI fitness and nutrition coach in early access on Android, with no ads and no data selling. You log foods yourself by searching 8,900+ Indian and global foods or by barcode, and a weekly check-in adjusts your calories, macros and step goal once enough is logged. Barcode coverage of Indian packaged foods is not complete, so search by name when a scan finds nothing.

What this page leaves out

Sources

The kJ to kcal conversions, the portion kcal, the sums, the rounding, the comparisons and every sentence starting "Our reading" are NYUS's own arithmetic or opinion, not from USDA or IFCT. The IFCT values are the means printed in IFCT 2017 Table 1; the USDA values, data-type labels and Measures-list portions are exactly as shown on the USDA record pages. The names in the first column are the tables' own names.

Frequently asked questions

Is there an official calorie figure for chutney per tablespoon?

No. IFCT 2017, the Indian Food Composition Tables from ICMR-NIN, prints almost entirely raw foods (its few cooked rows are boiled and omelette eggs and roasted vermicelli) and no chutney, sauce or other mixed dish, and a search of USDA FoodData Central SR Legacy on 29 October 2026 for "chutney", "chatni", "mint chutney", "coconut chutney" and "tamarind chutney" returned 0 results. So no primary record prints a calorie figure, or a tablespoon weight, for any chutney, and this page gives none. It prints the ingredient rows and two USDA peanut sauce records instead.

How many calories are in coconut chutney?

We cannot give a per-tablespoon figure from a primary record. The rows behind it are per 100 g: IFCT 2017 coconut kernel, fresh (H007) 1711 kJ (408.9 kcal by our arithmetic) with 41.38 g fat, coconut kernel, dry (H006) 2611 kJ (624.0 kcal), and USDA SR Legacy coconut meat, raw (170169) 354 kcal and dried, not sweetened (170170) 660 kcal. Recipes differ in how much coconut, water, roasted gram and oil go in, so the weight of coconut in a tablespoon is not printed anywhere we can cite.

How many calories are in mint, coriander or green chutney?

No record exists for the chutney. The leaf rows are IFCT 2017 mint leaves (G016) 155 kJ (37.0 kcal by our arithmetic) and coriander leaves (G009) 130 kJ (31.1 kcal) per 100 g, with green chillies (G008) 177 kJ, garlic (G011) 518 kJ and lemon juice (E033) 153 kJ. How much oil, nuts, roasted gram or sugar a home or shop adds is not in these rows.

How many calories are in tamarind (imli) chutney?

No record exists for the chutney. IFCT 2017 prints tamarind pulp (E064) at 1207 kJ (288.5 kcal by our arithmetic) and cane jaggery (I001) at 1480 kJ (353.7 kcal) per 100 g; USDA SR Legacy prints raw tamarinds (167763) at 239 kcal with 38.8 g total sugars. The mix of tamarind, jaggery and water is the maker's, and no tablespoon weight is printed.

How many calories are in tomato chutney and mango chutney?

No record exists for either. The ingredient rows per 100 g are IFCT 2017 tomato, ripe, hybrid (D075) 79 kJ (18.9 kcal by our arithmetic), onion, big (G017) 201 kJ and, for mango chutney, mango, green, raw (D057) 205 kJ (49.0 kcal) with cane jaggery (I001) 1480 kJ. The oil and sugar in a cooked chutney are not in these rows.

How many calories are in peanut chutney?

No record exists for peanut chutney. IFCT 2017 prints ground nut (H012) at 2176 kJ (520.1 kcal by our arithmetic) per 100 g with 23.65 g protein. The two records on this page that print a tablespoon are USDA's peanut sauces, which are not chutneys: peanut sauce made from peanut butter, water and soy sauce (174070) is 257 kcal per 100 g and 1 tbsp (18 g) is 46.3 kcal by our arithmetic, and peanut sauce made from coconut, water, sugar and peanuts (171575) is 179 kcal per 100 g and 1 tbsp (17 g) 30.4 kcal. We do not say either is a peanut chutney.

How can I work out my own chutney?

Weigh what goes in, multiply each ingredient's weight by its per 100 g figure and divide by 100, add the oil or ghee you used, then divide by the weight you ate. That arithmetic is yours: this page prints the ingredient rows to use but gives no recipe, no weights and no per-tablespoon number.

What do Calculated and the other labels on the USDA records mean?

USDA's records show a data-type label beside some fields and none beside others. On all 5 USDA records here the kcal and carbohydrate by difference are labelled Calculated; kJ is labelled Calculated on 2 and has no label on 3; the other labels (Analytical, Nutrient that is not analysed and others) vary by record and are printed exactly in the label table on this page. Household portions are USDA's Measures list; the kcal for a portion is our arithmetic (printed kcal per 100 g times the grams, divided by 100, to 0.1). IFCT 2017 prints no data-type labels.
