Join the NYUS waitlistCoconut milk goes into curries, stews and desserts by the spoon or the cup, and the number depends on which record you mean. This guide gives five coconut milk and coconut cream records from the SR Legacy table of USDA FoodData Central, each with the tablespoon and cup weight printed on its record page. IFCT 2017, the Indian Food Composition Tables from ICMR-NIN, has no coconut milk or coconut cream row (the PDF text has none), so its two coconut kernel rows (fresh and dry, 6 regions each) are shown only as a comparison. IFCT prints energy in kilojoules, so the kcal for those rows are our conversion. Our coconut guide has the kernel, and our soy, almond and coconut milk drink guide has the ready-to-drink cartons.
The short answer
By the SR Legacy records, 1 tablespoon (15 g) of raw coconut milk is 34.5 kcal, of canned coconut milk 29.6 kcal and of frozen coconut milk 30.3 kcal; 1 tablespoon (15 g) of raw coconut cream is 49.5 kcal. A cup is 552.0 kcal for raw coconut milk (240 g), 445.2 kcal for canned (226 g) and 484.8 kcal for frozen (240 g). Our reading: per 100 g the raw coconut cream record prints 330 kcal against 197 to 230 for the three coconut milk records, so cream and milk are not interchangeable in a log.
SR Legacy: per 100 g
Every figure below is as printed on the record page. The record names are the dataset's own. The last record is a sweetened canned cream.

SR Legacy: per printed portion
Each figure is our arithmetic on exact weights: kcal per 100 g times the grams, divided by 100, with the exact product in the sums line and the result shown to 0.1 with half rounding up. Every weight below is printed on the SR Legacy record page; none is ours.
| Food (SR Legacy record name) | Source | Portion printed on the record | kcal per portion | Protein · fat · carbs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nuts, coconut milk, raw (liquid expressed from grated meat and water) | SR Legacy 170172 | 1 tbsp, 15 g | 34.5 kcal | 0.3 g · 3.6 g · 0.8 g |

| Nuts, coconut cream, canned, sweetened | SR Legacy 170171 | 1 cup, 296 g | 1056.7 kcal | 3.5 g · 48.2 g · 157.5 g |
The sums: 170172 230 × 15 / 100 = 34.5, so 34.5 kcal; 170172 230 × 240 / 100 = 552, so 552.0 kcal; 170173 197 × 15 / 100 = 29.55, so 29.6 kcal; 170173 197 × 226 / 100 = 445.22, so 445.2 kcal; 169409 202 × 15 / 100 = 30.3, so 30.3 kcal; 169409 202 × 240 / 100 = 484.8, so 484.8 kcal; 170580 330 × 15 / 100 = 49.5, so 49.5 kcal; 170580 330 × 240 / 100 = 792, so 792.0 kcal; 170171 357 × 19 / 100 = 67.83, so 67.8 kcal; 170171 357 × 296 / 100 = 1056.72, so 1056.7 kcal. Protein, fat and carbohydrate are the same arithmetic on the per 100 g figures, rounded to 0.1 g with half rounding up.
Our examples: 2 tablespoons, 1/4 cup and 1/2 cup
The records print a tablespoon and a cup. The three amounts below are our own examples, not dataset values and not measurements: 2 tablespoons is twice the printed tablespoon weight, and 1/4 cup and 1/2 cup are a quarter and a half of the printed cup weight. Weigh yours and scale from the per 100 g column.

IFCT 2017: coconut kernel, for comparison
IFCT 2017, Table 1 (Proximate Principles), per 100 g, PDF p. 55. Both rows average 6 regions. IFCT 2017 says all its data except poultry and egg pertains to raw food (PDF p. 27). IFCT prints energy in kilojoules; kcal is our conversion at 1 kcal = 4.184 kJ, shown to 0.1 kcal with half rounding up. These are kernel rows, not milk or cream, and we do not combine them with the SR Legacy records.
| IFCT 2017 row | Code · page | Regions | Protein | Total fat | Energy per 100 g |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Coconut, kernel, fresh | H007 · PDF p. 55 | 6 | 3.84 g | 41.38 g | 408.9 kcal (1711 kJ) |
| Coconut, kernel, dry | H006 · PDF p. 55 | 6 | 7.27 g | 63.26 g | 624.0 kcal (2611 kJ) |
The conversions: H007 1711 / 4.184 = 408.9388145315487571701720841, so 408.9 kcal; H006 2611 / 4.184 = 624.0439770554493307839388145, so 624.0 kcal.
What stands out in the numbers
- Energy per 100 g, SR Legacy: 170171 (cream, canned, sweetened) 357 kcal, 170580 (cream, raw) 330, 170172 (milk, raw) 230, 169409 (milk, frozen) 202 and 170173 (milk, canned) 197.
- Fat per 100 g, SR Legacy: 170580 34.7 g, 170172 23.8 g, 170173 21.3 g, 169409 20.8 g and 170171 16.3 g.
- The sweetened cream is mostly carbohydrate: SR Legacy 170171 prints 53.2 g of carbohydrate per 100 g, against 2.81 g to 6.65 g for the other four.
- A cup is not a tablespoon: SR Legacy 170173 prints 226 g for a cup of canned coconut milk, 445.2 kcal by the same arithmetic, against 29.6 kcal for its 15 g tablespoon.
Why these are reference rows, not your pack or your gravy
- Names are the records'. We do not say that a carton, a tin, a tetra pack, home-made first-press nariyal doodh or a restaurant gravy matches any record; the same goes for thin and thick milk.
- No quarter cup in the data. The 2 tablespoon, 1/4 cup and 1/2 cup amounts are our examples; the printed weights are the tablespoon and the cup in the second table.
- The records' own notes. The record pages mark the kcal energy and the carbohydrate of all five records "Calculated", the kJ line "Calculated" on 170171 only, and carry no note on the protein and fat of 170172, 170173, 169409 and 170580. On 170171, protein, fat, water, fibre, sugars and sodium are marked "Manufacturer supplied(industry or trade association), Analytical data, incomplete documentation".
- A gravy is more than the milk. Oil, onion, spices and the other ingredients are not in these records; add each by its own weight.
- For a packaged product, the pack wins. This page uses no pack labels.
How to log it so the numbers hold
- Log by weight. 2 tablespoons of canned coconut milk (our example, twice the printed 15 g) is 30 g, and on SR Legacy 170173 that is 197 × 30 / 100 = 59.1, so 59.1 kcal.
- Log the record you used. If you pick the canned record for one dish, keep to it for the same dish rather than mixing it with the raw record.
- Cooking fat and sugar are separate. The oil in the tadka and the spoon of sugar are in our spoon guide; cream is in our cream and milk powder guide.
- Do not mix datasets inside one day. If you log a coconut milk from SR Legacy, keep to that record for the same dish.
Where NYUS fits (our app)
We make NYUS, so read this as ours. NYUS is an AI fitness and nutrition coach in early access on Android, with no ads and no data selling. You log foods yourself by searching 8,900+ Indian and global foods or by barcode, and a weekly check-in adjusts your calories, macros and step goal once enough is logged. Barcode coverage of Indian packaged foods is not complete, so search by name when a scan finds nothing.
What this page leaves out
- A calorie or fat target, and any claim about what coconut milk does to your weight or health: we have not looked up one for any person, so we give none. If you have a medical condition, ask your doctor or dietitian.
- Any named brand, pack label or FSSAI figure: not used, so the page does not mix label numbers with the records above.
- Ready-to-drink coconut milk cartons, light or diluted coconut milk, coconut powder, coconut water and fresh grated coconut: none is among the five records used here, so no number. The cartons are in our drink guide and the kernel in our coconut guide.
- Appam stew, Kerala curries and other dishes: this page has no dish number; see our appam guide.
- Nutrients beyond energy, protein, fat and carbohydrate, including sugars, fibre and sodium: not covered here.

How many calories are in a tablespoon of coconut milk?
It depends on the record. SR Legacy 170172 (Nuts, coconut milk, raw) prints 230 kcal per 100 g and lists 1 tbsp as 15 g, which is 34.5 kcal (230 x 15 / 100 = 34.5). SR Legacy 170173 (canned) prints 197 kcal per 100 g, 29.6 kcal for 15 g (197 x 15 / 100 = 29.55). SR Legacy 169409 (frozen) prints 202 kcal per 100 g, 30.3 kcal for 15 g (202 x 15 / 100 = 30.3).
How many calories are in 1/4 cup or 1/2 cup of coconut milk?
The records print a cup, not a quarter cup, so these two are our examples, a quarter and a half of the printed cup weight. For SR Legacy 170173 (canned, 226 g a cup) that is 56.5 g and 111.3 kcal for 1/4 cup, and 113 g and 222.6 kcal for 1/2 cup. For SR Legacy 170172 (raw, 240 g a cup) it is 60 g and 138.0 kcal for 1/4 cup, and 120 g and 276.0 kcal for 1/2 cup. Weigh yours and scale from the per 100 g figures.
How many calories are in a cup of coconut milk?
By the SR Legacy records, 1 cup is 552.0 kcal for raw coconut milk (170172, 240 g), 445.2 kcal for canned (170173, 226 g) and 484.8 kcal for frozen (169409, 240 g). Each is the record's kcal per 100 g times the printed cup weight, divided by 100.
How is coconut cream different from coconut milk here?
They are separate SR Legacy records. SR Legacy 170580 (Nuts, coconut cream, raw) prints 330 kcal per 100 g, 49.5 kcal for its 15 g tablespoon, against 230 kcal per 100 g for raw coconut milk (170172). SR Legacy 170171 (Nuts, coconut cream, canned, sweetened) prints 357 kcal per 100 g, 67.8 kcal for its 19 g tablespoon, and 53.2 g of carbohydrate per 100 g, so it is not a plain cream record.
Is a packet, a tetra pack or home-made nariyal doodh the same?
This guide does not decide that. The records are the dataset's own product names, IFCT 2017 has no coconut milk or coconut cream row (the PDF text has none), and we do not say which record a pack, a first-press home-made milk or a restaurant gravy matches; check the pack or weigh it. Our coconut guide has the fresh kernel and copra rows from IFCT.
