Calories in Cake, a Muffin, a Doughnut and a Brownie
A slice of birthday cake, a bakery muffin, a doughnut with chai or a brownie from the cafe: each is logged as one item, but the pieces vary a lot in weight, and the weight is most of the answer. This guide gives seven reference rows from USDA FoodData Central for cakes, a muffin, two doughnuts and a brownie, each with the piece weights USDA prints on the record. They are US in-store and commercial bakery products, so an Indian bakery or a home cake differs, and Indian food tables (IFCT 2017) have no cake, muffin, doughnut or brownie row at all.
The short answer
By the USDA records below, a 64 g piece of chocolate cake with chocolate frosting is about 249 kcal and USDA's 1/12-of-a-cake piece (138 g) about 537 kcal. A blueberry muffin is about 116 kcal at 31 g, 248 kcal at 66 g and 424 kcal at 113 g. A plain cake-type doughnut is about 234 kcal at 54 g and 308 kcal at 71 g; a glazed yeast doughnut is about 177, 253 or 316 kcal at 42, 60 or 75 g; a large brownie square (56 g) is about 227 kcal. Our reading: per 100 g the seven rows are close, 375 to 434 kcal, so the piece weight decides the calories. The same cake is 249 kcal at 64 g and 537 kcal at 138 g, and a muffin runs from 116 to 424 kcal across the weights USDA prints.
Cake: calories per piece
Each figure is our arithmetic: kcal per 100 g times the grams in the piece, divided by 100, rounded to the nearest kcal with half rounding up. The piece weights are USDA's, printed on each record page. USDA lists the same cake both as a 1/12 piece of a whole cake and as a smaller 1/8 piece of an 18 oz cake; we show both.

The sums: 379 × 144 / 100 = 545.76, so 546; 379 × 64 / 100 = 242.56, so 243; 389 × 138 / 100 = 536.82, so 537; 389 × 64 / 100 = 248.96, so 249; 391 × 67 / 100 = 261.97, so 262 kcal. Protein, fat and carbohydrate are the same arithmetic on the per 100 g figures, rounded to 0.1 g.
Muffin, doughnuts and brownie: calories per piece
The blueberry muffin record lists several muffin sizes, and the two doughnut records list several doughnut sizes; we show three muffin sizes, two sizes of the plain doughnut and three of the glazed one, all as USDA prints them. The brownie record also lists a package portion, which we do not use. We use the large square, 56 g.

The sums: glazed doughnut 421 × 75 / 100 = 315.75, so 316; 421 × 60 / 100 = 252.6, so 253; 421 × 42 / 100 = 176.82, so 177. Plain doughnut 434 × 71 / 100 = 308.14, so 308; 434 × 54 / 100 = 234.36, so 234. Brownie 405 × 56 / 100 = 226.8, so 227. Muffin 375 × 113 / 100 = 423.75, so 424; 375 × 66 / 100 = 247.5, so 248; 375 × 31 / 100 = 116.25, so 116 kcal.
What stands out in the numbers
- Per 100 g the rows run from 375 to 434 kcal: plain doughnut 434, glazed doughnut 421, brownie 405, vanilla-frosted yellow cake 391, chocolate cake 389, chocolate-frosted yellow cake 379 and blueberry muffin 375.
- The piece weight decides. USDA's muffin sizes run from 31 g to 113 g and its glazed doughnut sizes from 42 g to 75 g in the rows above, so the same record gives 116 to 424 kcal for a muffin and 177 to 316 kcal for a glazed doughnut, by our arithmetic.
- The cake piece is the biggest swing. A 1/12 piece of a whole cake is 138 g or 144 g, about twice the 64 g piece of USDA's 18 oz cake: 537 against 249 kcal for the chocolate cake.
- Fat per 100 g, as printed: plain doughnut 24.9 g, glazed doughnut 22.7 g, chocolate cake 20 g, vanilla-frosted yellow cake 17.9 g, chocolate-frosted yellow cake 17.8 g, brownie 16.3 g and muffin 16.1 g.
Why these are not your bakery's cake
- US products. The records describe US in-store bakery and commercial products. An Indian bakery cake, a pastry, a cupcake, a home-baked cake or a doughnut from a local shop has its own recipe and size, and its calories can be quite different.
- Frosting and filling. The cake rows include the frosting named in the record. A cake with cream, fondant, fruit or a filling is not these rows.
- Size. Muffin sizes on the USDA record run from 31 g to 168 g (mini 17 g); a cupcake or a cafe muffin can sit anywhere in that range or beyond. Weigh yours when you can; scale from the per 100 g column.
- The pack wins for a packaged product. This page uses no pack labels, so it does not mix them with the records above.
How to log it so the numbers hold
- Log by weight when you can. A slice you weigh at 90 g is 90 / 100 times the per 100 g figure, not a "slice".
- Pick the piece size closest to yours and say so in the entry, rather than rounding a big piece down to a small one.
- Log the chai or coffee separately. Our chai and filter coffee guide gives the cup, and our chocolate and biscuit guide gives the biscuit.

What this page leaves out
- A calorie target or any claim about what these foods do to your weight or health: we have not looked up one for any person, so we give none. If you have a medical condition, ask your doctor or dietitian.
- Any named brand, pack label or FSSAI figure: not used, so the page does not mix label numbers with the records above.
- Indian bakery cakes, pastries, cupcakes, rusk, cream rolls and cake from mixes, other muffin flavours and other doughnut types, and cakes with fruit, nuts or cream fillings: not covered here.
- An IFCT 2017 comparison: IFCT 2017 has no cake, muffin, doughnut or brownie row (we searched all 585 pages of the PDF on 27 Oct 2026 for cake, pastry, muffin, doughnut, donut, brownie, cupcake, bakery and biscuit, and found no row).
- Nutrients beyond energy, protein, fat and carbohydrate: not covered here.

How many calories are in a slice of chocolate cake?
The USDA FoodData Central SR Legacy record 174934 (Cake, chocolate, commercially prepared with chocolate frosting, in-store bakery) prints 389 kcal per 100 g. USDA lists a 1/8 piece of an 18 oz cake as 64 g, about 249 kcal by our arithmetic (389 x 64 / 100), and a 1/12 piece of a whole cake as 138 g, about 537 kcal. The record is a US bakery cake, so an Indian bakery or home cake differs; weigh your slice and scale from 389 kcal per 100 g.
