Calories in a Cup of Soup: Tomato, Vegetable, Chicken
Track this in NYUS. NYUS builds a workout plan and an Indian-food diet plan from your goal, body, schedule and food preferences.
Join the NYUS waitlistTomato, vegetable and chicken soup each have a cup or can weight printed on their SR Legacy record page. This guide gives seventeen soup records from the SR Legacy table of USDA FoodData Central (canned tomato, vegetable, chicken, cream, minestrone, pea and lentil soups prepared with water or ready to serve, two broths, and three Chinese restaurant soups), with the portion weights printed on their record pages. IFCT 2017, the Indian Food Composition Tables from ICMR-NIN, prints per 100 g of foods only and has no soup rows or cup weights, so this page uses SR Legacy only. Instant noodles and dry soup mixes are in our instant noodles and soup guide.
The short answer
By the SR Legacy records, 1 cup of canned tomato soup prepared with water (248 g) is 79.4 kcal, 1 cup of vegetarian vegetable soup (241 g) 67.5 kcal and 1 cup of chicken noodle soup (248 g) 59.5 kcal. Our reading: the cups weigh about the same but the soups do not, so 1 cup of split pea with ham soup (253 g) is 189.8 kcal against 14.9 kcal for 1 cup of chicken broth (249 g).

SR Legacy: per printed portion
Each figure is our arithmetic on exact weights: kcal per 100 g times the grams, divided by 100, with the exact product in the sums line and the result shown to 0.1 with half rounding up. Every weight below is printed on the SR Legacy record page; none is ours. Only the cup, can and carton portions are listed; several records also print 1 fl oz, which is not used here, and each record prints 100 g.

What stands out in the numbers
- Energy per 100 g, SR Legacy, highest first: 172916 (split pea with ham soup) 75, 174561 (green pea soup) 61, 171549 (lentil with ham soup) 56, 171574 (tomato bisque) 50, 174553 (cream of chicken soup) 48, 171559 (chunky vegetable soup) 39, 172915 (cream of mushroom soup) 39, 174808 (hot and sour soup) 39, 172913 (minestrone) 34, 171176 (tomato soup) 32, 171821 (wonton soup) 32, 174564 (vegetarian vegetable soup) 28, 174807 (egg drop soup) 27, 172909 (chicken noodle soup) 24, 172910 (chicken with rice soup) 24, 174536 (chicken broth) 6, 171583 (vegetable broth) 5.
- Per printed cup, highest first: 172916 (split pea with ham soup) 253 g, 189.8 kcal, 174561 (green pea soup) 259 g, 158.0 kcal, 171549 (lentil with ham soup) 248 g, 138.9 kcal, 171574 (tomato bisque) 247 g, 123.5 kcal, 174553 (cream of chicken soup) 244 g, 117.1 kcal, 172915 (cream of mushroom soup) 248 g, 96.7 kcal, 174808 (hot and sour soup) 233 g, 90.9 kcal, 171559 (chunky vegetable soup) 230 g, 89.7 kcal, 172913 (minestrone) 241 g, 81.9 kcal, 171176 (tomato soup) 248 g, 79.4 kcal, 171821 (wonton soup) 223 g, 71.4 kcal, 174564 (vegetarian vegetable soup) 241 g, 67.5 kcal, 174807 (egg drop soup) 241 g, 65.1 kcal, 172909 (chicken noodle soup) 248 g, 59.5 kcal, 172910 (chicken with rice soup) 243 g, 58.3 kcal, 174536 (chicken broth) 249 g, 14.9 kcal, 171583 (vegetable broth) 221 g, 11.1 kcal.
- The printed cups weigh about the same: they run from 221 g to 259 g, so the kcal per cup differ mainly because the soups differ per 100 g, not because the cups do.
- A can is more than a cup: the printed prepared cans and cartons give 172916 (split pea with ham soup) 1 can (11.5 oz), prepared, 614 g, 460.5 kcal, 171549 (lentil with ham soup) 1 can (20 oz), 567 g, 317.5 kcal, 171574 (tomato bisque) 1 can (11 oz), prepared, 600 g, 300.0 kcal, 174553 (cream of chicken soup) 1 can (10.75 oz), prepared, 593 g, 284.6 kcal, 172913 (minestrone) 1 can (10.5 oz), prepared, 586 g, 199.2 kcal, 174564 (vegetarian vegetable soup) 1 can (10.5 oz), prepared, 586 g, 164.1 kcal, 171583 (vegetable broth) 1 carton (32 oz), 926 g, 46.3 kcal, 171583 (vegetable broth) 1 can, 390 g, 19.5 kcal.
- Two record names include ham: SR Legacy 172916 (split pea with ham) and 171549 (lentil with ham).
Why these are reference rows, not your bowl
- Names are the records'. Twelve of the seventeen records are canned soups, prepared with an equal volume of water or ready to serve, as the record names say; two are ready-to-serve broths and three are Chinese restaurant soups. We do not say that a homemade soup, a restaurant bowl or a packet soup sold in India matches any record, and the record names are used exactly as printed.
- No row for sweet corn, manchow or rasam. A search of the SR Legacy table on 28 Oct 2026 returned no record named sweet corn soup, manchow soup or rasam, so the page gives no figure for them and none should be inferred from the records above.
- Every portion here is printed. No cup, can or carton weight on this page is ours: each is printed on its record page, and the only weight that is ours is the labelled 100 g example in the logging section.
- The records' own notes. The record pages mark the kcal energy of twelve records "Calculated" and of 171176, 174564, 172910, 172915 and 174561 with a recipe note ("Recipe; Per package directions ..."). They are USDA values, not our measurements.
- For a packaged product, the pack wins. This page uses no pack labels.
How to log it so the numbers hold
- Log by weight. 100 g of canned chicken noodle soup prepared with water (our example weight, not a dataset value) on SR Legacy 172909 is 24 × 100 / 100 = 24, so 24.0 kcal.
- Cream and bread are separate. Cream, butter, croutons and bread added to a bowl are not in these records; add each by its own weight, for example from our cream guide.
- Prepared with water matters. The canned records are the soup after it is diluted as the record names say; a different dilution is a different number.
- Do not mix datasets inside one day. If you log a soup from SR Legacy, keep to that record for the same bowl.
Where NYUS fits (our app)
We make NYUS, so read this as ours. NYUS is an AI fitness and nutrition coach in early access on Android, with no ads and no data selling. You log foods yourself by searching 8,900+ Indian and global foods or by barcode, and a weekly check-in adjusts your calories, macros and step goal once enough is logged. Barcode coverage of Indian packaged foods is not complete, so search by name when a scan finds nothing.
What this page leaves out
- A calorie target, and any claim about what soup does to your weight or health: we have not looked up one for any person, so we give none. If you have a medical condition, ask your doctor or dietitian.
- Sweet corn, manchow and mixed vegetable soup, rasam, dal soup and any homemade or restaurant soup with no record used here.
- Other soup records in the SR Legacy list are left out, for example condensed (undiluted) soups, soups prepared with milk, reduced-sodium variants, dry mixes and other restaurant soups.
- Instant noodles, dry soup mixes and cup noodles are in our instant noodles and soup guide, and cooked dals in our cooked dal guide.
- Nutrients beyond energy, protein, fat and carbohydrate: not covered here.

Two records here are canned lentil with ham and split pea with ham soups; they contain ham, and we do not say that they match dal soup.
