Calories in Brinjal (Baingan) per 100 g: IFCT 2017
Track this in NYUS. NYUS builds a workout plan and an Indian-food diet plan from your goal, body, schedule and food preferences.
Join the NYUS waitlist"Brinjal calories per 100 g" has no single answer in the Indian Food Composition Tables (IFCT 2017, ICMR-NIN): it lists 21 brinjal rows, numbered 1 to 21 with no variety or colour printed. This guide gives 19 of them (Brinjal-2 to Brinjal-20), raw and per 100 g, with the range, the protein, fat, fibre and carbohydrate they print, and a 100 g, 250 g and 500 g table. Brinjal-1 and Brinjal-21 are named on our other vegetable pages and are not repeated. Cooked brinjal from the USDA table is in our boiled bhindi, gobi, palak and baingan guide, a brinjal per piece in our potato, brinjal and bhindi per piece guide and other common Indian vegetables in our common Indian vegetables guide.
The short answer
By IFCT 2017, raw brinjal is 91 to 124 kJ per 100 g across the 19 rows, which is 22 to 30 kcal: the lowest is D026 (Brinjal 17) at 22 kcal and the highest D022 (Brinjal 13) at 30 kcal. Our unweighted mean of the 19 row energies is 105.1 kJ, 25.1 kcal (our arithmetic, not an IFCT figure). IFCT prints energy in kJ only, so the kcal are our conversion (kJ divided by 4.184, rounded to a whole kcal). Our reading: the rows are close, so for raw brinjal the choice of row moves the answer by at most 8 kcal per 100 g; what changes a baingan dish is the oil and the rest of the recipe, which no IFCT row includes.
IFCT 2017: per 100 g, raw
Figures are as the IFCT 2017 PDF prints them, per 100 g of edible portion: moisture, protein and total fat in g, total dietary fibre and available carbohydrate in g, and energy in kJ. Where a row averages several regions IFCT prints a mean with a spread; the table shows the mean. The kcal is our conversion. IFCT 2017 says all its data except poultry and egg is for raw food (PDF p. 27), so these are raw weights. IFCT prints no portion weights, so there is no printed-portion table on this page.

100 g, 250 g and 500 g of raw brinjal
Shops sell brinjal by 250 g and 500 g, which IFCT does not print. These three weights are ours: each cell is the IFCT kJ figure times the grams, divided by 100 and by 4.184, as kcal, with protein and fat as the IFCT per 100 g figure times the grams divided by 100, shown to 0.1 with half rounding up. They are raw edible portion; a whole brinjal with its cap and stalk weighs more than the edible portion, and we do not say by how much. None is a cooked baingan bharta, fry or curry.

Why these are reference rows, not your brinjal
- The rows have no variety names. IFCT 2017 prints Brinjal-1 to Brinjal-21 with the species Solanum melongena and regional names only; we do not say which row is a round, long, purple, white or green brinjal.
- Region averages. 5 of the 19 rows come from one region and 14 are averages of 2 to 6 regions; the regions differ by row, so the rows are not a national average.
- Raw only. IFCT has no cooked brinjal row. A baingan bharta, a fry or a curry adds oil, onion and masala and changes the water, which this page does not give.
- Edible portion. IFCT figures are per 100 g of edible portion, not of the brinjal as bought.
- Energy is converted. IFCT prints kJ; kcal is our kJ / 4.184, rounded.
How to log it so the numbers hold
- Weigh the cleaned brinjal, and say raw. 100 g of raw brinjal on row D022 (our example weight, not an IFCT value) is 124 × 100 / 100 / 4.184 = 29.6, so 29.6 kcal; on row D026 it is 21.7 kcal.
- Add the cooking separately. Oil, ghee and sugar are in our ghee, oil and sugar guide.
- Do not mix datasets inside one day. If you log brinjal from IFCT, keep to that row for the same meal rather than switching to a USDA eggplant row.
Where NYUS fits (our app)
We make NYUS, so read this as ours. NYUS is an AI fitness and nutrition coach in early access on Android, with no ads and no data selling. You log foods yourself by searching 8,900+ Indian and global foods or by barcode, and a weekly check-in adjusts your calories, macros and step goal once enough is logged. Barcode coverage of Indian packaged foods is not complete, so search by name when a scan finds nothing.
What this page leaves out
- A calorie target, and any claim about what brinjal does to your body: we have not looked up one for any person, so we give none. If you have a medical condition, ask your doctor or dietitian.
- Baingan bharta, bharwa baingan, fried brinjal, brinjal curry and any restaurant or maker's version: no row used here.
- The IFCT 2017 brinjal rows are D010 (Brinjal-1) to D030 (Brinjal-21), 21 rows in all; 19 are used here and D010 and D030 are left out because our other pages already name them.
- USDA eggplant records and the other IFCT vegetables: not covered here.
- Nutrients beyond energy, protein, fat, fibre, carbohydrate and the moisture IFCT prints: not covered here.

The kcal conversion (kJ / 4.184, whole kcal), the unweighted mean, the 100 g, 250 g and 500 g table, the sums, the rounding, the comparisons and every sentence starting "Our reading" are NYUS's own arithmetic or opinion, not from IFCT. The moisture, protein, fat, fibre, carbohydrate and kJ values are exactly as printed in the IFCT 2017 PDF (means for multi-region rows). The names in the first column are IFCT's own row names.

How many calories are in brinjal (baingan) per 100 g?
IFCT 2017 lists 21 brinjal rows (Brinjal-1 to Brinjal-21); the 19 on this page run from 91 kJ (22 kcal, D026, Brinjal 17) to 124 kJ (30 kcal, D022, Brinjal 13) per 100 g raw, edible portion. Our unweighted mean of the 19 row energies is 105.1 kJ, which is 25.1 kcal; that mean is our arithmetic, not an IFCT figure.
Why does IFCT give 19 different brinjal numbers?
IFCT prints no variety or colour for its brinjal rows, only the numbers 1 to 21, so we cannot say which row is a round, long, purple or green brinjal. Each row is an average of 1 to 6 regions (5 of the 19 are single-region rows, 14 are averages of 2 to 6 regions). Use the range on this page, or the unweighted mean, and say which.
How many calories are in 250 g or 500 g of brinjal?
For 250 g and 500 g, see the weights table on this page (our arithmetic on the IFCT kJ figure, all 19 rows); for example D026 is 54.4 kcal for 250 g and 108.7 kcal for 500 g, and D022 74.1 kcal and 148.2 kcal. These are raw edible portion, not a cooked baingan bharta, fry or curry.
Are these raw or cooked brinjal calories?
No. IFCT 2017 says all its data except poultry and egg is for raw food (PDF p. 27), so every row on this page is raw brinjal, per 100 g of edible portion. IFCT has no baingan bharta, fried brinjal or curry row; oil, onion and masala are separate, so a cooked dish has more than the raw figure.
How much carbohydrate, fibre and protein is in 100 g of brinjal?
Per 100 g, the 19 rows have 2.71 to 4.51 g of carbohydrate (IFCT "available carbohydrate"), 3.32 to 4.38 g of total dietary fibre, 1.18 to 1.82 g of protein and 0.25 to 0.37 g of fat. The row with the highest energy (D022) also has the highest carbohydrate (4.51 g).
Are there other IFCT brinjal rows?
IFCT 2017 has two more brinjal rows, D010 (Brinjal-1) and D030 (Brinjal-21), which are named on our other vegetable guides and are not repeated here; this page gives the other 19.
Can I log brinjal in NYUS?
NYUS is our app. You log foods yourself by searching 8,900+ Indian and global foods or by barcode; log brinjal by its weight when you can, and say whether it was raw or cooked, and add the oil. NYUS is in early access on Android: 30-day free trial, then plans from ₹499 for one month, paid once with no auto-renewal, no card needed to start.
