Aloo Paratha Calories: Home-Style and With Butter
Track this in NYUS. NYUS builds a workout plan and an Indian-food diet plan from your goal, body, schedule and food preferences.
Join the NYUS waitlistThe figures on this page are built from IFCT 2017 Table 1 rows and, where Table 1 has no row, USDA FoodData Central SR Legacy records. No primary table has an aloo paratha record: IFCT 2017, the Indian Food Composition Tables from ICMR-NIN, prints raw foods (its few cooked rows are boiled and omelette eggs and roasted vermicelli) and no aloo paratha, no paratha or other cooked flatbread, no cooking oil row and no butter row, and USDA FoodData Central SR Legacy has no aloo paratha record. So this page does not quote a number. It works one paratha out line by line: the raw atta, potato, onion, green chilli and coriander leaves from named IFCT 2017 rows and the tawa oil and the butter from USDA records, with weights per paratha that are our assumptions and the fat shown apart so you can see what it adds, once as a home-style paratha roasted with a little oil and once with butter on top. They are estimates, shown so you can change the weights to match your dough and your filling. For plain parathas from the same atta row see our paratha vs roti guide, for a paneer-stuffed paratha worked out the same way our paneer paratha guide, for a potato sabzi our aloo sabzi guide, and for the spoon values our ghee, oil and sugar guide.
The short answer
By our working, one home-style aloo paratha (40 g raw atta, 55 g raw potato, 10 g onion, 2 g green chilli and 3 g coriander leaves with 4 g of oil on the tawa) is about 208.4 kcal and 5.3 g protein, and one with butter on top (the same, with 4 g of tawa oil and 10 g of salted butter (2 pats) on top) is about 280.1 kcal and 5.4 g protein; a plate of two is 416.8 and 560.2 kcal. Across the three sizes and 2 to 6 g of tawa oil the home-style paratha runs 148.2 to 268.5 kcal, and with 1 to 3 pats of butter the buttered one runs 201.8 to 358.5 kcal, with the filling in every cell. These are estimates from the weights below, not measured values, not from an aloo paratha record and not a shop or restaurant figure. Our reading: the parts of the home-style main case rank the atta 128.1 kcal, the potato 38.4 kcal, the tawa oil 35.4 kcal, the onion, green chilli and coriander leaves 6.5 kcal; the parts of the buttered main case rank the atta 128.1 kcal, the butter on top 71.7 kcal, the potato 38.4 kcal, the tawa oil 35.4 kcal, the onion, green chilli and coriander leaves 6.5 kcal; and the buttered paratha is 71.7 kcal above the home-style one.
IFCT 2017 rows used, per 100 g
IFCT 2017 Table 1 prints, per 100 g edible portion, water, protein, ash, total fat, total dietary fibre, insoluble and soluble fibre, carbohydrate and energy in kJ. We read these 5 rows from the PDF text on 30 October 2026, as the mean of the regions shown (PDF pages in the Sources); the kcal is ours (kJ divided by 4.184, to 0.1). IFCT prints no portion weights; every row here is raw, so we count raw weight, the water in the dough and in the potato adds no energy, and no table prints a cooked weight for this dish. A019 is the same atta row as on our paratha vs roti guide.

The oil and the butter: USDA SR Legacy, per 100 g
IFCT 2017 Table 1 has no cooking oil row and no butter row, so these come from USDA FoodData Central SR Legacy: record 171410, "Oil, peanut, salad or cooking", and record 173410, "Butter, salted". They are US records. Energy is USDA's kcal with the kJ beside it; water, protein, total fat and carbohydrate (by difference) are in g, then fibre (g), total sugars (g) and sodium (mg), all per 100 g.
| Food (USDA record name) | Source | Energy | Water · protein · fat · carbohydrate (g) | Fibre (g) · total sugars (g) · sodium (mg) |

The data-type label on each USDA field, as the records show it
USDA's record pages show a data-type label beside some fields and none beside others. This table copies what each record shows, read field by field from the nutrient table of the record page; "no label shown" means the record prints no label there, and "not printed" means the record has no row for that field. We do not interpret the labels beyond printing them. IFCT 2017 prints no such labels.

The household portions USDA prints for the oil and the butter
These are the entries in each record's Measures list, as printed; the other entry is 100 g. This page counts the oil in grams, taking 1 teaspoon as 4.5 g, the record's own teaspoon, and the butter in pats of 5 g, the record's own pat. The kcal in the last column is ours: the printed kcal per 100 g times the grams, divided by 100, shown to 0.1.
| Food (USDA record name) | Source | Portion as USDA prints it | Energy for the portion (our arithmetic) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Oil, peanut, salad or cooking | SR Legacy 171410 | 1 tsp (4.5 g) | 39.8 kcal |
| Oil, peanut, salad or cooking | SR Legacy 171410 | 1 cup (216 g) | 1909.4 kcal |
| Oil, peanut, salad or cooking | SR Legacy 171410 | 1 tbsp (13.5 g) | 119.3 kcal |
| Butter, salted | SR Legacy 173410 | 1 pat (1" sq, 1/3" high) (5 g) | 35.9 kcal |
| Butter, salted | SR Legacy 173410 | 1 stick (113 g) | 810.2 kcal |
| Butter, salted | SR Legacy 173410 | 1 cup (227 g) | 1627.6 kcal |
| Butter, salted | SR Legacy 173410 | 1 tbsp (14.2 g) | 101.8 kcal |
The portion sums: 171410 1 tsp (4.5 g): 884 × 4.5 / 100 = 39.78, so 39.8 kcal; 171410 1 cup (216 g): 884 × 216 / 100 = 1909.44, so 1909.4 kcal; 171410 1 tbsp (13.5 g): 884 × 13.5 / 100 = 119.34, so 119.3 kcal; 173410 1 pat (1" sq, 1/3" high) (5 g): 717 × 5 / 100 = 35.85, so 35.9 kcal; 173410 1 stick (113 g): 717 × 113 / 100 = 810.21, so 810.2 kcal; 173410 1 cup (227 g): 717 × 227 / 100 = 1627.59, so 1627.6 kcal; 173410 1 tbsp (14.2 g): 717 × 14.2 / 100 = 101.81, so 101.8 kcal. By the same arithmetic 5 g of oil is 44.2 kcal and 10 g 88.4 kcal, and 1 pat of butter (5 g) is 35.9 kcal, 2 pats 71.7 kcal and 3 pats 107.6 kcal.
Worked example 1: home-style aloo paratha
Every weight here is our assumption for one paratha, counted raw: whole wheat atta dough stuffed with raw-weighted potato, onion, green chilli and coriander leaves, rolled out and roasted on a tawa with a little oil. Each IFCT line is the kJ divided by 4.184, times the grams, divided by 100, to 0.1 kcal; each USDA line is the printed kcal per 100 g times the grams, divided by 100; protein is the table's protein per 100 g times the grams, divided by 100. Salt, spices and the water in the dough are not counted.
| Ingredient (our weight) | Row | Grams | kcal per 100 g | kcal | Protein (g) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wheat flour, atta | IFCT A019 | 40 g | 320.3 | 128.1 | 4.2 |
| Potato, brown skin, big | IFCT F006 | 55 g | 69.8 | 38.4 | 0.8 |
| Onion, big | IFCT G017 | 10 g | 48.0 | 4.8 | 0.2 |
| Chillies, green - all varieties | IFCT G008 | 2 g | 42.3 | 0.8 | 0.0 |
| Coriander leaves | IFCT G009 | 3 g | 31.1 | 0.9 | 0.1 |
| Oil, peanut, salad or cooking (on the tawa, main case) | SR Legacy 171410 | 4 g | 884.0 | 35.4 | 0.0 |
| Aloo paratha, home-style, main case (one paratha) | 208.4 | 5.3 |
The grid varies the size of the paratha (30 g of atta with 40 g of potato, 40 g of atta with 55 g of potato, 50 g of atta with 70 g of potato; the onion, chilli and coriander stay as above) and the tawa oil per paratha (2, 4, 6 g, our assumption); the table above is the 40 g main case.
| Atta and potato per paratha | 2 g tawa oil | 4 g tawa oil | 6 g tawa oil | Protein (g) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 30 g atta, 40 g potato | 148.2 | 165.9 | 183.5 | 4.1 |
| 40 g atta, 55 g potato (main case) | 190.7 | 208.4 | 226.0 | 5.3 |
| 50 g atta, 70 g potato | 233.2 | 250.9 | 268.5 | 6.7 |
Worked example 2: aloo paratha with butter on top
Same method and the same atta, potato, onion, green chilli and coriander leaves; the paratha is roasted with 4 g of tawa oil and 10 g of salted butter (2 pats) is put on top. This is our assumed recipe, not a measured paratha.
| Ingredient (our weight) | Row | Grams | kcal per 100 g | kcal | Protein (g) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wheat flour, atta | IFCT A019 | 40 g | 320.3 | 128.1 | 4.2 |
| Potato, brown skin, big | IFCT F006 | 55 g | 69.8 | 38.4 | 0.8 |
| Onion, big | IFCT G017 | 10 g | 48.0 | 4.8 | 0.2 |
| Chillies, green - all varieties | IFCT G008 | 2 g | 42.3 | 0.8 | 0.0 |
| Coriander leaves | IFCT G009 | 3 g | 31.1 | 0.9 | 0.1 |
| Oil, peanut, salad or cooking (on the tawa) | SR Legacy 171410 | 4 g | 884.0 | 35.4 | 0.0 |
| Butter, salted (on top, main case 2 pats) | SR Legacy 173410 | 10 g | 717.0 | 71.7 | 0.1 |
| Aloo paratha with butter, main case (one paratha) | 280.1 | 5.4 |
The grid varies the size of the paratha (30 g of atta with 40 g of potato, 40 g of atta with 55 g of potato, 50 g of atta with 70 g of potato; the onion, chilli and coriander stay as above) and the butter on top (1, 2, 3 pats of 5 g, our assumption); the table above is the 40 g main case.
| Atta and potato per paratha | 1 pat butter on top (5 g), 4 g tawa oil | 2 pats butter on top (10 g), 4 g tawa oil | 3 pats butter on top (15 g), 4 g tawa oil | Protein (g), first to last column |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 30 g atta, 40 g potato | 201.8 | 237.6 | 273.5 | 4.1 to 4.2 |
| 40 g atta, 55 g potato (main case) | 244.3 | 280.1 | 316.0 | 5.3 to 5.4 |
| 50 g atta, 70 g potato | 286.8 | 322.6 | 358.5 | 6.7 to 6.8 |
The two main cases side by side
These are the single examples used in the short answer; each follows from the tables above and from the weights in the cell. The two-paratha rows are twice the one-paratha totals.
| Main case (our weights) | kcal | Protein (g) |
|---|---|---|
| Home-style, one paratha: 40 g raw atta, 55 g raw potato, 10 g onion, 2 g green chilli and 3 g coriander leaves with 4 g of oil on the tawa | 208.4 | 5.3 |
| With butter, one paratha: the same, with 4 g of tawa oil and 10 g of salted butter (2 pats) on top | 280.1 | 5.4 |
| Home-style, two parathas | 416.8 | 10.6 |
| With butter, two parathas | 560.2 | 10.8 |
What stands out in the numbers
- Home-style, part by part: the atta 128.1 kcal, the potato 38.4 kcal, the tawa oil 35.4 kcal, the onion, green chilli and coriander leaves 6.5 kcal. Raw atta is 320.3 kcal per 100 g (IFCT A019) and raw potato 69.8 kcal (F006).
- With butter, part by part: the atta 128.1 kcal, the butter on top 71.7 kcal, the potato 38.4 kcal, the tawa oil 35.4 kcal, the onion, green chilli and coriander leaves 6.5 kcal; against the home-style paratha the butter adds 71.7 kcal and the extra tawa oil 0.0 kcal. Salted butter is 717 kcal per 100 g (USDA 173410).
- Size against fat: in the home-style version the size of the paratha (30 to 50 g of atta) moves it more than the tawa oil (2 to 6 g): 85.0 kcal against 35.3 kcal; in the version with butter the size of the paratha (30 to 50 g of atta) moves it more than the butter (1 to 3 pats): 85.0 kcal against 71.7 kcal. Each 5 g of oil is 44.2 kcal and each pat of butter 35.9 kcal.
- Protein: about 5.3 g in the home-style paratha and 5.4 g with butter; the atta supplies 4.2 g of it and the potato 0.8 g.
- These are estimates: no aloo paratha record exists, the weights are ours, and a different weight of any ingredient in the tables above will change them.
Why these are estimates, not your aloo paratha
- No record exists for the dish. IFCT 2017 prints raw foods and no cooked flatbread, and USDA SR Legacy has no aloo paratha record (its one paratha record is "Bread, paratha, whole wheat, commercially prepared, frozen").
- The weights are assumptions. No table prints how much atta, potato or fat an aloo paratha takes; ours are stated per paratha so you can replace them.
- An aloo paratha is not a standard piece. The page assumes three sizes (30, 40, 50 g of raw atta); a paratha made from more or less dough or filling is more or less.
- Raw weights. The potato is counted raw and no table prints the weight of the dough, the filling or the paratha after cooking, so the page counts raw weight and cannot give a per 100 g figure.
- The fat is a range. The 2 to 6 g of tawa oil per paratha and the 1 to 3 pats of butter are our assumptions; no table prints how much fat a paratha takes.
- US data. The oil and butter rows are US records; IFCT Table 1 has neither as an energy row.
- Labels are printed, not judged. Calculated, Analytical and the other labels are USDA's words on the records; we print them and draw no conclusion from them.
How to log it so the numbers hold
- Log it by parts. Weigh the raw atta and the raw potato once for your usual paratha, and log the oil and the butter by their own weight (weight × figure ÷ 100); our ghee, oil and sugar guide has the spoon values.
- Say how much fat. It is an input this page cannot know; 5 g of oil is 44.2 kcal and a pat of butter 35.9 kcal.
- Log the number of parathas. A plate of two is twice the figures here.
- Say what else went in. Ghee, curd, pickle and anything served with it are not counted.

What this page leaves out
- A measured calorie figure for aloo paratha as a dish: no primary record prints one, so every figure here is an estimate from stated weights.
- A calorie target, and any claim about what atta, potato, oil or butter do to your body: we have not looked up any for any person, so we give none. If you have a medical condition or are pregnant, ask your doctor or dietitian.
- Other versions, such as aloo paratha with ghee, cheese, paneer, gobi or besan, a paratha fried in more oil, and a paratha stuffed with a boiled and mashed filling weighed after boiling: not covered here; log them from their own rows.
- Salt, ajwain, chaat and garam masala, the water in the dough, and curd, pickle or tea served with it: not counted.
- Shop, restaurant and packaged aloo paratha: no table prints a weight or fat use, so we give no such figure; read the pack for packaged ones.
- The USDA paratha and potato bread records ("Bread, paratha, whole wheat, commercially prepared, frozen"; "Bread, potato" and "Bread, gluten-free, white, made with potato extract, rice starch, and rice flour"): found by search on 30 October 2026; the paratha record is named commercially prepared and frozen, the two potato bread records are breads, and none is an aloo paratha, so none is used.
- Per 100 g figures: no table prints a cooked weight, so none is given here.
- Nutrients beyond energy, water, protein, fat, carbohydrate, fibre, total sugars and sodium: not covered here.

How many calories are in an aloo paratha?
No table prints one. IFCT 2017, the Indian Food Composition Tables from ICMR-NIN, prints raw foods (its few cooked rows are boiled and omelette eggs and roasted vermicelli) and no aloo paratha, no paratha or other cooked flatbread, no cooking oil row and no butter row, and USDA FoodData Central SR Legacy has no aloo paratha record. Worked from IFCT rows and USDA oil and butter with weights that are our assumptions, one home-style aloo paratha (40 g raw atta, 55 g raw potato, 10 g onion, 2 g green chilli and 3 g coriander leaves with 4 g of oil on the tawa) comes to 208.4 kcal and 5.3 g protein; one with butter on top (the same, with 4 g of tawa oil and 10 g of salted butter (2 pats) on top) comes to 280.1 kcal and 5.4 g protein. Across the three sizes (30, 40, 50 g of atta) and 2 to 6 g of tawa oil the home-style paratha runs 148.2 to 268.5 kcal, and with 1 to 3 pats of butter the buttered one runs 201.8 to 358.5 kcal. These are estimates, not measured values.
How many calories are in two aloo parathas?
A plate of two is twice the one-paratha figure here: 416.8 kcal and 10.6 g protein for two home-style parathas and 560.2 kcal and 10.8 g protein for two with butter, at the main-case weights. Curd, pickle or more butter served with them is not counted.
How many calories are in 100 g of aloo paratha?
This page does not give one. No table prints a cooked aloo paratha or its weight, so a per 100 g figure would need a cooked weight we would be making up. The IFCT rows are per 100 g of raw atta (320.3 kcal) and raw potato (69.8 kcal) and the page works from those and from stated raw weights instead.
How much protein is in an aloo paratha?
Estimated from table protein per 100 g with our weights: 5.3 g in the home-style paratha and 5.4 g with butter on top, of which the 40 g of atta supplies 4.2 g (IFCT A019: 10.57 g per 100 g) and the 55 g of potato 0.8 g (F006: 1.54 g per 100 g). Across the three sizes it runs 4.1 to 6.7 g (home-style) and 4.1 to 6.8 g (with butter). The oil adds none and the butter 0.1 g.
Why is the paratha with butter higher than the home-style one?
In this working one thing differs: the 10 g of salted butter on top (71.7 kcal; USDA SR Legacy 173410, 717 kcal per 100 g, 1 pat 5 g) and, because the buttered paratha is roasted with 4 g of tawa oil, 0.0 kcal of difference in the oil (884 kcal per 100 g; 171410). The atta, potato and filling are the same, so the buttered paratha is 71.7 kcal higher. These are our assumed weights, not a measured paratha.
How much do the tawa oil and the butter add?
By USDA SR Legacy 171410 each 5 g of peanut oil is 44.2 kcal and each teaspoon (4.5 g) 39.8 kcal, and by 173410 each pat of salted butter (5 g) is 35.9 kcal. We have no measured figure for how much oil a paratha takes, so the page shows it as a range per paratha: in the home-style version the size of the paratha (30 to 50 g of atta) moves it more than the tawa oil (2 to 6 g): 85.0 kcal against 35.3 kcal; in the version with butter the size of the paratha (30 to 50 g of atta) moves it more than the butter (1 to 3 pats): 85.0 kcal against 71.7 kcal.
Does this include curd, pickle, ghee, salt or other spices?
No. Only the listed ingredients are counted: raw atta, raw potato, onion, green chilli, coriander leaves, oil and, in the second version, salted butter. Salt, ajwain, chaat or garam masala, ghee, the water in the dough, the boiling water of the potato, and curd, pickle or tea served with it are not counted. The potato is counted raw, because no table prints a boiled or mashed weight for this filling. The page gives no shop, restaurant or packaged aloo paratha figure.
Is aloo paratha in the USDA bread records?
No. A search of USDA FoodData Central SR Legacy on 30 October 2026 (control first, 'roll dinner', 11 results) found 0 results for aloo paratha, potato paratha, stuffed paratha and aloo. The one paratha record is "Bread, paratha, whole wheat, commercially prepared, frozen", a commercially prepared frozen paratha and not an aloo paratha, and the two records for potato bread are "Bread, potato" and "Bread, gluten-free, white, made with potato extract, rice starch, and rice flour", which are breads, not parathas. None is an aloo paratha, so none is used here.
What do the labels on the USDA oil and butter records mean?
USDA's record pages show a data-type label beside some fields and none beside others. The peanut oil record labels kcal "Calculated" and total sugars "Assumed zero (Insignificant amount or not naturally occurring in a food, such as fiber in meat)"; the salted butter record labels kcal, kJ and carbohydrate Calculated, water Analytical, and total sugars and sodium "Nutrient that is based on other nutrient/s; value used directly, ex. Nut.#204 from Nut.#298"; the rest are printed exactly in the label table on this page. The gram, teaspoon and pat kcal are our arithmetic (printed kcal per 100 g times the grams, divided by 100). IFCT 2017 prints no data-type labels.
