Mushroom is one food with several records, and the number depends on the type and on whether it is raw, boiled or canned. This guide uses two datasets and keeps them apart. The SR Legacy table of USDA FoodData Central has eight mushroom records we use (white raw and boiled, crimini, portabella, oyster, enoki, shiitake and canned), each with the cup or piece weights printed on its record page. IFCT 2017, the Indian Food Composition Tables from ICMR-NIN, has four mushroom rows (button, chicken, shiitake and dried oyster); every one is a single-region row, and the page says so on each row. IFCT 2017 prints energy in kilojoules, so the kcal for those rows are our conversion.

The short answer

By the SR Legacy records, 1 cup (70 g) of raw white mushroom pieces or slices is about 15 kcal (22 kcal per 100 g), 1 cup (156 g) of boiled white mushroom pieces about 44 kcal (28 per 100 g), 1 cup (86 g) of sliced raw oyster mushroom about 28 kcal (33 per 100 g) and 1 cup (65 g) of sliced raw enoki about 24 kcal (37 per 100 g). By IFCT 2017 Table 1 (single-region rows), fresh button mushroom is 27 kcal per 100 g, fresh chicken mushroom 21, fresh shiitake 58 and dried oyster mushroom 244. Our reading: the raw SR Legacy rows are all between 22 and 37 kcal per 100 g, so the cup you pick matters more than the type, and the dried IFCT row is not comparable to the fresh ones.

SR Legacy: per portion

Each figure is our arithmetic: kcal per 100 g times the grams in the portion, divided by 100, rounded to the nearest kcal with half rounding up. Every portion weight is printed on the SR Legacy record page, none is ours.

The sums: white raw 18 g: 22 × 18 / 100 = 3.96, so 4 kcal; white raw 23 g: 22 × 23 / 100 = 5.06, so 5 kcal; white raw 96 g: 22 × 96 / 100 = 21.12, so 21 kcal; white boiled 12 g: 28 × 12 / 100 = 3.36, so 3 kcal; portabella 84 g: 22 × 84 / 100 = 18.48, so 18 kcal; crimini 87 g: 22 × 87 / 100 = 19.14, so 19 kcal; crimini 20 g: 22 × 20 / 100 = 4.4, so 4 kcal; oyster raw 15 g: 33 × 15 / 100 = 4.95, so 5 kcal; enoki 64 g: 37 × 64 / 100 = 23.68, so 24 kcal; canned 132 g: 25 × 132 / 100 = 33, so 33 kcal; canned 78 g: 25 × 78 / 100 = 19.5, so 20 kcal; canned 47 g: 25 × 47 / 100 = 11.75, so 12 kcal.

Two example weights that are ours

The two weights below, 200 g of raw white mushrooms and 150 g of boiled white mushrooms, are our own example weights, not dataset values and not measurements. They only show how the per 100 g figure scales; weigh yours.

Our example weight and rowSourcekcalProtein · fat · carbs
white mushrooms, raw, 200 gSR Legacy 16925144 kcal6.2 g · 0.7 g · 6.5 g
white mushrooms, boiled, 150 gSR Legacy 16925242 kcal3.3 g · 0.7 g · 7.9 g

The sums: white raw 200 g: 22 × 200 / 100 = 44, so 44 kcal; white boiled 150 g: 28 × 150 / 100 = 42, so 42 kcal.

IFCT 2017: the four mushroom rows

IFCT 2017, Table 1 (Proximate Principles), per 100 g edible portion, PDF p. 56. IFCT 2017 says all its data except poultry and egg is for raw food (PDF p. 27); the first three rows are fresh and the fourth is a dried mushroom, so its per 100 g figure is not a fresh-weight figure. IFCT prints energy in kilojoules; kcal is our conversion at 1 kcal = 4.184 kJ, rounded to the nearest kcal with half rounding up. Every row has No. of Regions = 1, so each is the figure for one region and none is an average over several regions.

IFCT 2017 rowCode · pageRegionsProteinFatEnergy per 100 g

Oyster mushroom, dried (Pleurotus sp.)J004 · PDF p. 56119.04 g2.86 g244 kcal (1019 kJ)

The conversions: J001 115 / 4.184 = 27.49, so 27 kcal; J002 89 / 4.184 = 21.27, so 21 kcal; J003 243 / 4.184 = 58.08, so 58 kcal; J004 1019 / 4.184 = 243.55, so 244 kcal.

Frequently asked questions

How many calories are in a cup of mushrooms?

By the SR Legacy record 169251 (Mushrooms, white, raw), which prints 22 kcal per 100 g and lists 1 cup, pieces or slices, as 70 g, a cup is about 15 kcal by our arithmetic (22 x 70 / 100 = 15.4). SR Legacy 169252 (white, cooked, boiled, drained, without salt) prints 28 kcal per 100 g and lists 1 cup pieces as 156 g, about 44 kcal.

How many calories are in 100 g of button mushroom?

IFCT 2017 Table 1 prints Button mushroom, fresh (Agaricus sp., J001, PDF p. 56) at 115 kJ per 100 g, which is 27 kcal by our conversion at 4.184 kJ per kcal. It is a single-region row. SR Legacy 169251 (Mushrooms, white, raw) prints 22 kcal per 100 g.

How many calories are in oyster and shiitake mushrooms?

SR Legacy 168580 (Mushrooms, oyster, raw) prints 33 kcal per 100 g and lists 1 cup sliced as 86 g, about 28 kcal. SR Legacy 169242 (Mushrooms, shiitake, raw) prints 34 kcal per 100 g and lists 1 piece whole as 19 g, about 6 kcal. IFCT 2017 has Shiitake mushroom, fresh (J003) at 58 kcal per 100 g and a dried oyster mushroom row (J004) at 244 kcal per 100 g; both are single-region rows, and J004 is dried, so it is not comparable to the raw rows.

Are canned mushrooms different from fresh ones?

They are a different record. SR Legacy 169254 (Mushrooms, canned, drained solids) prints 25 kcal per 100 g and lists 1 cup as 156 g, about 39 kcal by our arithmetic, against 22 kcal per 100 g for the raw white record 169251. The two records are separate rows and we do not say how the canned product was made.

Is there a number for mushroom curry or matar mushroom?

No. IFCT 2017 has no mushroom dish row and this guide uses no SR Legacy record for a mushroom dish, so it gives no number for mushroom curry, matar mushroom, mushroom fry or any dish with oil and masala.

Can I log mushrooms in NYUS?
