A duck egg, a quail egg and a country hen egg are not the same size or the same record, and the dataset behind a number matters. This guide uses two datasets and keeps them apart. The SR Legacy table of USDA FoodData Central gives five raw egg records (duck, goose, quail, turkey and hen) with the weight of one egg printed on each record page. IFCT 2017, the Indian Food Composition Tables from ICMR-NIN, gives eleven egg rows on PDF p. 58 (poultry egg, country hen, duck and quail, raw, boiled or omlet), with the region count on every row; IFCT prints no weight for one egg. IFCT 2017 prints energy in kilojoules, so the kcal for its rows are our conversion. Our existing egg guide covers the hen egg boiled, fried, scrambled and poached.

The short answer

By the SR Legacy records, one raw quail egg (9 g) is about 14 kcal, one raw duck egg (70 g) about 130, one raw turkey egg (79 g) about 135, one raw goose egg (144 g) about 266, and one large raw hen egg (50 g) about 72. By IFCT 2017 Table 1 (per 100 g, single-region rows), raw country hen egg (M008) is 168 kcal, raw duck egg (M012) 182 and raw quail egg (M014) 152, against 135 kcal for the raw poultry egg (M001, 6 regions). Our reading: per 100 g the duck and country eggs are higher in energy than the poultry egg row, but per egg the size dominates, so a quail egg is a small fraction of any of the others.

SR Legacy: per egg

Each figure is our arithmetic: kcal per 100 g times the grams in the portion, divided by 100, rounded to the nearest kcal with half rounding up. Every weight is printed on the SR Legacy record page, none is ours.

The sums: quail 158 × 9 / 100 = 14.22, so 14 kcal; duck 185 × 70 / 100 = 129.5, so 130 kcal; turkey 171 × 79 / 100 = 135.09, so 135 kcal; goose 185 × 144 / 100 = 266.4, so 266 kcal; hen 143 × 50 / 100 = 71.5, so 72 kcal. Protein, fat and carbohydrate are the same arithmetic on the per 100 g figures, rounded to 0.1 g with half rounding up.

IFCT 2017: eleven egg rows, per 100 g

IFCT 2017, Table 1 (Proximate Principles), per 100 g, PDF p. 58. IFCT 2017 says all its data except poultry and egg pertains to raw food (PDF p. 27), so the state of each egg row is what its own name says (raw, boiled or omlet); IFCT does not give a cooking weight loss or an egg weight. "Regions" is how many regions the row averages: the three poultry egg rows (M001, M004, M007) average 6, 6 and 3 regions, and the eight country hen, duck and quail rows are each a single region. IFCT prints the quail rows with the spelling "quial". Energy is IFCT's kJ value; kcal is our conversion at 1 kcal = 4.184 kJ, rounded to the nearest kcal with half rounding up.

Example weights and counts that are ours

IFCT 2017 gives no weight for one country hen egg. The 50 g weight below is our own example weight (it is the weight SR Legacy prints for a large hen egg, not a country egg), and the count of six quail eggs is our own example. Neither is a dataset value for these eggs; weigh yours.

Our example weight and rowSourcekcal
Egg, country hen, whole, raw, 50 g (our example weight)IFCT 2017 M00884 kcal
Egg, country hen, whole, boiled, 50 g (our example weight)IFCT 2017 M00992 kcal
6 quail eggs (our example count; 6 x 9 g)SR Legacy 17219185 kcal

The sums: M008 50 g: 704 kJ x 50 / 100 = 352 kJ, / 4.184 = 84.13, so 84 kcal; M009 50 g: 767 kJ x 50 / 100 = 383.5 kJ, / 4.184 = 91.66, so 92 kcal; quail 54 g: 158 × 54 / 100 = 85.32, so 85 kcal.

Frequently asked questions

How many calories are in a duck egg?

SR Legacy 172189 (Egg, duck, whole, fresh, raw) prints 185 kcal per 100 g and lists 1 egg as 70 g, which is 130 kcal by our arithmetic (185 x 70 / 100 = 129.5). IFCT 2017 Table 1 prints Egg, duck, whole, raw (M012, PDF p. 58, 1 region) at 760 kJ per 100 g, 182 kcal by our conversion at 4.184 kJ per kcal.

How many calories are in a quail egg?

SR Legacy 172191 (Egg, quail, whole, fresh, raw) prints 158 kcal per 100 g and lists 1 egg as 9 g, about 14 kcal by our arithmetic (158 x 9 / 100 = 14.22). Six quail eggs, 54 g by our own example count of six times USDA's 9 g, come to about 85 kcal. IFCT 2017 has a single-region raw quail egg row (M014, 152 kcal per 100 g), printed with the spelling quial.

How many calories are in a country (desi) hen egg?

IFCT 2017 Table 1 has Egg, country hen, whole, raw (M008, 1 region) at 704 kJ per 100 g, 168 kcal, and boiled (M009, 1 region) at 767 kJ, 183 kcal. It gives no weight for one egg; for an example 50 g egg (our weight, not a dataset value) the raw row comes to about 84 kcal and the boiled row about 92 kcal by our arithmetic.

Is a duck egg higher in calories than a hen egg?

By the records here, yes per 100 g. SR Legacy 172189 (duck) prints 185 kcal and SR Legacy 171287 (Egg, whole, raw, fresh) prints 143 kcal per 100 g. IFCT 2017 prints 182 kcal for the raw duck egg (M012, 1 region) against 135 kcal for the raw poultry egg (M001, 6 regions). Per egg the SR Legacy weights also differ: 70 g for the duck egg and 50 g for the large hen egg.

Is there a number for egg curry or bhurji?

No. This guide gives only the IFCT 2017 rows named raw, boiled or omlet and the SR Legacy raw egg records, and no number for egg curry, bhurji, masala omelette or any dish with oil and masala.

Can I log these eggs in NYUS?

NYUS is our app. You log foods yourself by searching 8,900+ Indian and global foods or by barcode; log duck, quail or country eggs by their weight or count, and any oil or masala separately.
